It's gonna be a great looking film, along with everything else.
There's a part of me who thinks that this isn't shocking.
I like GDT, but like what my friend said about his body of work:
Paraphrasing: "Del Toro's imagination is infectious. I just wish he could make better movies"
I think GDT's writing is often the problem. For a funny guy, his humor doesn't come through, and he oddly writes stilted dialog. Even The Strain's writing can be so hamfisted that it'll leave me confused about the tone of the show.
I read Del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities book, and in it he's very open about not writing good dialogue. He's also very open about a bunch of the rest of his flaws. I give him props for that. Although, if you can't write as well as you'd like, either get better or hire a writer. Still, that doesn't stop me from being an uber fan of Mr. Del Toro.
Have they only seen his English language films?
Writing is more than dialogue though. Dialogue is just the tangible thing that people latch onto and complain about. His storylines and themes are strong more often than not. His characters vary.

Pacific Rim though.I've never had a problem with GDT's dialogue. Is it the greatest that there's ever been, certainly not. But I've never had a moment where it actually took me out of a movie. Probably because he tends to get actors who can sell it well, sort of like how the actors in the Original SW trilogy could sell that clunky dialogue (GDT is nowhere near as bad as Lucas in this regard though).
Pacific Rim though.
Pacific Rim was the only time the dialogue (more the delivery of the dialogue) had me rolling my eyes.

Loving the eerie vibe. This has to be Rated R, right?
Guillermo Del Toro said:“Crimson Peak is a much, much, much smaller movie, completely character-driven. It’s an adult movie, an R-rated movie, pretty adult. Shockingly different from anything I’ve done in the English language. Normally, when I go to do a movie in America for the spectacle and younger audience, for Blade or whatever. This movie’s tone is scary and it’s the first time I get to do a movie more akin to what I do in the Spanish movies.”
“[Crimson Peak] has moments that are very visceral, physical violence. You’re in this sort of sedate romance and then there is this brutal moment where you’re like, “Whoa!” And it has a lot of kinky moments. The only kinky moment I’ve ever shot is the leg f**k in The Devil’s Backbone. [laughs] This has a little more kinkiness than that.”

Guillermo Del Toro said:"It’s a very traditional Gothic romance,” del Toro told Fangoria, “and at the same time very modern in the sense that it has strong sex and violence. I’ve never done a movie that has anything remotely kinky, but this movie is a little kinky and the violence is very shocking. So you’re traversing through a tranquil Gothic romance, and all of a sudden this terrifying and sexual stuff comes in. It’s very much a haunted-house movie, but I don’t think there’s a ghost of a chance that we’ll get a PG-13 rating.”
