Imo del Toro hasn't made a good film since pan's labyrinth and that was ten years ago

Especially Chastain. I really enjoyed this film, one of Del Toro's best and most personal imo. I thought of GDT pitching a film to potential investors during that scene where Hiddleston is trying to raise money for his clay mine lol.

Yeah she was great, I wouldn't say it's one of his best, but it's a good movie and didn't deserve to flop. GDT needs a hit, I am still gutted Pacific Rim 2 is not happening personally.

I'd heard that this wasn't that good, so maybe it was just my low expectations going in but I thought it was pretty decent. Not del Toro's best work but well enough. The cinematography was great, and Chastain and Wasikowska were great in their roles. Hiddleston was okay but Hunnam needs to be stopped :o. Oh and Chastain looking like the bride of Dracula near the was just :hmr:.

It's a shame del Toro hasn't been able to make an English language movie as good as his Mexican ones. I hope he manages to do so one day. He's a good filmmaker, but he needs to work on his scripts.

Enjoyed this even more on 2nd viewing, the move really comes together on a re-watch and man Chastain is good in this!

Only just got around to watching Crimson Peak last night and I really enjoyed it.

Jessica Chastain was the highlight (of course! :drl:) and ''Allerdale Hall'' looked amazing. The red seeping throughout the house and the land around it sinking was visually awesome too. This is what GDT does best.

He has spoken about how when he writes English language movies he writes directly in English rather than translating. He might want to rethink that somewhat.

Beyond just some clunkly lines or whatever I was just really disappointed with how on the nose this film was with its themes. They were largely the same themes as the Devils Backbone but instead of demonstrating the themes through the story he just had the characters speak them aloud.

Things like "Ghosts are metaphor for the past" and "its not a ghost story its a story with ghosts in it" are more or less word for word the kinds of things GDT himself has said on special features for films like The Devil's Backbone. This newer film rehashes many elements from The Devils Backbone with much less skill and to much lesser effect.

Also I've written about it on here before but the re-application of Santi's whole porcelain doll ghost design to a completely different character really felt like a bad move. Its such an obviously deliberate choice but one that I still can not suss out a reason for and ultimately it just really grates. I need to check out GDT's commentary to see if he speaks about it.

I think the movie looks better on blu ray than it did in theaters.

That's also been my experience with Pacific Rim actually.

Although this specific shot was pretty much magical in the theater.

It really felt like it was looking up at it. Very memorable moment, personally.

I will say this much about the movie: it had phenomenal ghost designs.

Otherwise, I really wanted to like it more than I did.

Most of GDT's movies look better on BD than they do in the cinema, he makes visual feasts that's for sure. It's a damn shame we are getting PR2, the guy can't seem to catch a break. Crimson Peak was a much better movie than its box office suggests also.
