Hawaii Five-O - Part 2

Kono has always been the sharpshooter. Who is going to fulfill that role now that she's gone? And it was always badass to see her in action.
Based on the character description they put out for the new female cast member, I have a bad feeling that we're going to get a Mary Sue/try hard character who'll be shown to be good at just about everything to compensate for them no longer having Chin Ho and Kono.

Meh, the show has been spinning it's wheels since Wo Fat got killed. It peaked in terms of quality a long time ago.

OMG yes... it has and it's sad.

I missed most of this last season as I lost my sister recently... I wish the last couple of eps we watched together could've been better... anywho, I like the Yakuza lady, I think she should be a bid bag in the future.

Surprised it's been renewed.

Well that sucks that Kim and Park were getting good billing as those two are vital to the show...they may have lost me right there....

They will have to cast two heavy hitters to keep this show going and have instant chemistry in order for me to forget Kono and Chin....

I loved this show for the first 3 seasons until that damn episode when they captured Wo Fat in that reality show segment. I don't even know what happened between Wo Fat and Mama McGarrett.

Two of the longtime leads of “Hawaii Five-0” are reportedly leaving the show after seven seasons due to failed salary negotiations.

Sources told Variety that Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park sought equal pay to Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan, and quit when CBS offered the Asian stars 10 to 15 percent less than their white co-stars make.

Kim and Park have been with the “Hawaii Five-0” since the reboot first aired in 2010. Their characters, Chin Ho Kelly and Kono Kalakaua, are two of the show’s biggest leads.

Representatives for the actors did not immediately respond to HuffPost requests for comment.

CBS did not respond to HuffPost’s request for comment, but told Variety in a statement that the network is “so appreciative of Daniel and Grace’s enormous talents, professional excellence and the aloha spirit they brought to each and every one of our 168 episodes.”

“They’ve helped us build an exciting new Hawaii Five-0, and we wish them all the best and much success in their next chapters,” a CBS spokesperson said. “Mahalo and a hui hou…”

Kim and Park’s reported negotiations highlight a growing battle for pay equality in Hollywood. “Shameless” star Emmy Rossum fought to be paid more than her co-star William Macy last year, after making less than he did for several seasons. The actress got Macy’s support, who said “she deserves everything.” Robin Wright also spoke out last year about her demand to be paid the same as “House of Cards” co-star Kevin Spacey ? though she told United Airlines’ in-flight magazine in a June story that she’s not sure the equal paycheck ever really materialized.

How can Scott Caan negotiate to not even appear in a third of the episodes and still get paid more than them?

Maybe CBS should just hire some cheap labour Asian factory workers to replace them next season. :o

Because he's white and Jewish?

All the hysteria aside here, Caan and O'Loughlin were the main duo and basically the leads of the show when it first started. O'Loughlin is the true lead and protagonist of the show, but wasn't he supposed to be leaving a while back?

I'm just saying, the show was basically started built around the Caan and O'Loughlin relationship and they were basically the two co-leads of the series.

Now granted, Grace Park and Randall Dae Kim more than pulled their weight on this series, and IMHO they deserve to get paid. But it's not my call.

I know people get angry and emotional about these things. At the same time, just because Kim and Park aren't getting paid, doesn't mean Caan doesn't deserve to earn what he's getting either. Caan put in equal amount of work in on the show as well over the years, and he was higher up the ladder than Kono and Chin.

Also, look, the show kind of sucks. It's sucked for several seasons. IMHO, Park and Kim are better off taking their talents elsewhere because they are talented. I'm sure they could get decent work elsewhere.

Once again, the show peaked in terms of quality a long time ago. The main conflict was Five-O vs. Wo Fat, and that was basically resolved a long time ago. Not to mention, a lot of the central mysteries around McGarrett's parents were solved.

No he didn't deserve what he got, not if the other two were paid less when they were putting in more work. 1/3 of the episodes=Shouldn't be getting paid more, simple as that.

I'm not letting the show off of the hook for this, excuses aside.

CBS did not make themselves look any better in their statement.

We did not want to lose them and tried very hard to keep them with offers for large and significant salary increases.

So you were paying them next to nothing compared to their co-stars in the first place that you had to do a significant increase that still didn't come near their co-stars?

I've seen various reports saying that AOL and Caan were making around $115-120K an episode so if the reports of DDK and Park only getting to reportedly 10-15% in CBS' final offer, they were likely making 20 to 30% less the past couple of seasons. That's a potential salary difference of between 600K to 900k a year, with it possibly being even more since AOL and Caan got a back-end deal for a percentage of the show's syndication money (something that CBS may or may have offered DDK and Park.) With how much their storylines and contributions to the show have increased the past few seasons, it's no wonder DDK and Park possibly felt they were being severely underpaid (in comparison to the other original team members) and that CBS' final offer was sort of a slap in the face.

Here's the FB post that Daniel Dae Kim wrote about his departure from the show and what the future holds for him. Classy way to exit while also sort of alluding to some of the underlying factors for why he couldn't accept the offer.

A MESSAGE TO MY FANS ABOUT HAWAII 5-0
Sorry for the delay in hearing from me, but like you I’m sure, my July 4th holiday was busy with friends and family. I’m back now and didn’t want to let any more time go by without reaching out. By now many of you have heard the news, and I’m sad to say it is true. I will not be returning to Hawaii Five-0 when production starts next week. Though I made myself available to come back, CBS and I weren’t able to agree to terms on a new contract, so I made the difficult choice not to continue.

As sad as it feels to say goodbye, what I feel most is gratitude. I am so deeply thankful to our crew, writers and everyone associated with the show – and especially the cast, who have been nothing but supportive through this entire process. They and the crew have been my second family for seven years and I wish them nothing but success for season 8 - and beyond.

I also want to say thank you to Peter Lenkov, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and everyone at CBS. I will always be grateful for their faith in me to bring Chin Ho Kelly to life. As an Asian American actor, I know first-hand how difficult it is to find opportunities at all, let alone play a well developed, three dimensional character like Chin Ho. I will miss him sincerely.

What made him even more special is that he was a representative of a place my family and I so dearly love. It has been nothing short of an honor to be able to showcase the beauty and people of Hawaii every week, and I couldn’t be prouder to call these islands home. To my local community, mahalo nui loa.

Finally, I want to thank all of you, the fans. I’ve read your messages and I can’t tell you how much they’ve meant to me. I never, ever forget that YOU are the reason Hawaii Five-0 is the success that it is, and interacting with you online and in person around the world(!) has been one of the greatest joys of this entire experience. I’m so sorry we won’t be continuing this journey together.

I’ll end by saying that though transitions can be difficult, I encourage us all to look beyond the disappointment of this moment to the bigger picture. The path to equality is rarely easy. But I hope you can be excited for the future. I am. 5-0 continues on after one of its strongest seasons. I’ve got new acting projects on the horizon, and as a producer, my company, 3AD, has its first show, THE GOOD DOCTOR, set to air this fall on ABC. I hope you’ll tune in. There’s a lot to look forward to and I’ll be sure to share it with you. In the meantime,

Aloha, thank you and Happy Independence Day!
-DDK

So far the only cast members to publicly support him and Grace are Ian Anthony Dale (who plays Adam) and Dennis Chun (who plays Duke Lukela and is the son of the original Chin Ho, Kam Fong Chun.)

And yet that's fairly common in all walks of life.

In a new story from The Hollywood Reporter, sources close to CBS are saying they offered a salary within 2% of AOL and Caan's salaries but without the lucrative back-end points. They say that Park's negotiations were complicated by the fact she wanted to only do a handful of episodes and be written out. Not sure I buy this since this sounds like CBS trying to save face. I bet that CBS will try to hire two Asian/PI actors to replace them and add diversity back to the cast but they'd likely be the lowest paid actors of any of the regulars, which would still not help them learn about pay equality.

According to Variety, AOL and Caan will make nearly $200K per episode next season. CBS sources are saying they got Kim to within $5K of them and a production deal with Kim's 3AD production company, but Kim's sources are saying the difference was much larger. Park only wanted to do half a season but CBS balked at her salary for such a small amount of work. Much of the disagreement also dealt with the actors and CBS' views on whether Chin Ho and Kono were co-stars or supporting actors, which is why DDK and Park couldn't get the back end money like AOL and Caan were able to leverage.

At our house....we think the back and forth between McGarrett and Dano is hilarious, but Caan's constant disappearance is annoying.

We both love Grace Park and Daniel Dae Kim. We like them and their storylines and would prefer to see them over Caan or Chi McBride. We like Chi as an actor in other stuff but find his character annoying.

The salary dispute here is interesting when put into the context of another CBS show THE BIG BANG THEORY. When Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch asked for a pay raise and CBS said no....several of the other cast members took a pay cut so that they could get the raise. There's no mention of anything like that being attempted on H50.

I'm not a fan of this show but good for Grace Park and Daniel Day-Kim for walking over not getting the pay they deserve. Also, I've seen all of the lead actors in a lot of other stuff and the two of them are MUCH more talented that Alex O'Loughlin and Scott Caan. I never liked either of those guys as actors and they're the main reason I never got into this show.

This means that Julie Benz and Ian Anthony Dale probably won't be back either. There's no reason for their characters to be around now, even though they were just guest stars. They were only there as Chin Ho and Kono's other halves.

The positive outcome of this story is that CBS is looking worse and worse for it and only adds weight to the growing demand for equality among actors. Obviously this is not going to be the tipping point but it does nudge it ever so slightly more towards it.

I always figured Alex O'Loughlin would be the highest paid as McGarrett has been the main character from the start, but the way they are paying Caan and giving in to how many eps he wants to do but wont do the same for Grace Park utterly stinks on multiple levels.

I do think there is a difference since Caan misses at most 3 episodes a year while according to the sources in Variety's article, she wanted to only work half the season at the same pay. I can sort of see how CBS didn't think they could pay Park the same per episode as the rest if she was going to miss most of the season.

DDK had probably the best case for getting a raise near AOL and Caan as he's never missed an episode, has capably carried major storylines, and is probably one of the most well-liked cast members by crew, fans, and locals. It sounds like instead of offering him back-end money, they only offered him production deals for his production company, which aren't worth as much to him as the back-end money.

Peter Lenkov has released a statement of Instagram and Twitter where he lays out what happened and how they intend to move forward. I'm not sure it's going to help since it sort reads like putting blame on DDK and Park while trying to make CBS sound like they did everything they could to make it work. At this point, I wouldn't be shocked if CBS intentionally lowballed DDK and Park knowing it'd likely make them walk and they could then hire a couple cheaper actors, thereby increasing the profit margin on the show and they'd get bigger bonuses.

yeah major segment's were devoted to this whole on both etalk canada and it's rival entertainment to night canada . and kim saying how he'll be ok while grace publicist said she's been quite for now.

Well truth be told , the only I've toon into the show was on occasion like when a cross like mccgyyer 's or Ncis La. would go there . and the people that interacted with them were kim's and grace parks characters. they'd make this big deal about Magaret knowing the other character's from the other show's like ll cooj's sam or the guy gorge et's character knowing him . but he'd never ever show up. which is weird. and those two did good work in his stead and besides Grace park has been a prize Canadian actress since her time as a playing a teen in the show Edgemont where she was with Kristin kreuk who was Lana Lang in small ville.

I've seen her in a lot of show's where she was in ether law enforcement with in the shows or doing something else and she always did well both in Canada and state side shows and this was before battle star Galactica.

So I guess she'd be show hopping again til another show where she's the main star happens again . And Daniel Dae Kim's in the up coming video game agents of mayham, which is a spinoff of saint's the 3 in an alternate universe reboot according to the makers of that game . And hes bonus dlc where you order the game.

it's a shame this happened and yeah they deserve equal pay. And the push for Asian actor's to be in equal standing too. They did far too much work for them not to get equal pay. ohhhh, cbs.

Lol why that'd be so dumb

Whos gonna lead the show after Alex leaves ? Scott is barely there as is to be a leading man (which he is not) & Grace & Daniel did so much more than Scott ever did & Scott does not deserve equal pay as Alex as at least Alex earns that pay check while Scott does not
