This is what I was wanting out of this season, Great, great episode.

and yes, Ray is somehow alive.

The extra weight Farrell put on to play Ray really added to the weathered appearance he already has going. Gives his body language a sullen old dog vibe. He was still quick on the draw despite the odds being stacked against him.

The theme song's lyrics were different in the first two episodes.

Episode 1:

My woman’s here
My children too
Their graves are safe
From ghosts like you
In places deep
With roots entwined
I live the life I left behind
The war was lost
The treaty signed
I was not caught
I crossed the line
I was not caught
Though many tried
I live among you
Well disguised
Episode 2:

I could not kill
The way you kill
I could not hate
I tried I failed
You turned me in
At least you tried
You side with them
Whom you despise
There’s truth that lives
And truth that dies
I don’t know which
So never mind

That was a pretty good episode. I've gotta say, I really like Ray. I feel for the guy, because it winds up seeming like he sold his soul to the devil for the kind of reason most people would have (vengeance), but it seemed like he sold it for nothing when his marriage fell apart and the child he calls his son might not be his, but was born from that moment of violence. His "I'm tired" line said alot to me, and he just seems like the classic Noir character who tried to do the 'right' thing and just wound up doing the wrong thing for the right reason.

I'm pretty confident that Paul is in the closet, and just hasn't come to terms with it. The scene with his mom seemed pretty touchy, so I dunno maybe there's something more nefarious in his past. He did mention the burn on his shoulder was from before he served overseas. But, the way he talked about the guy at the bank who hit on him and him having to go to the bathroom and popping a pill so he could have sex with his girlfriend, and him looking at the male hookers on the street...yeah, pretty confident he's a sexually repressed gay man whose trying to be a straight man. There definitely seems to be a theme about sexual excess, what with Casper's home and his lifestyle along with Ani's sister, and maybe even the repression of sexuality...with Ani watching porn, and whatever the unexplained even with her boyfriend, or just **** buddy, that sounded like it was about some adventurous sex or something...and Paul's situation.

I mean, the only one outside of all of that is pretty much Ray, whose just apathetic about most of everything. But, damn that was a crazy ending. Note to everyone:
If you have a gun, and you find a big puddle of blood in a house, don't holster the weapon. Just, don't holster the damn thing.

Someone here last week immediately speculated he may be closet gay, which seems to have been on point. Honestly, I love how all damaged these characters are. I care more about where they end up at the end than I do the crime they are investigating, which I think is the point Pizzolatto was trying to make in the scene where Ani dropped off Ray at his car.

and yes, Ray is somehow alive.

I never doubted it for a second, but it still was a powerful, shocking ending. His likely survival isn't that far fetched if the Crow Killer used bean bags or rock salt a la Michael Madsen in Kill Bill 2. To continue my point from above, Ray told Ani that he thinks they are not supposed to solve this thing. The Crow Killer purposely allowing Ray to live absolutely plays into his theory.

It's also important to remember that the heroes walked away at the end of Season 1. They nearly died but ended up surviving and it gave them their last bit of character development in a quantum leap forward in their lives. I suspect that's not going to play out the same this year for our "heroes".

I think its already been established that there is a secret cult.

I don't necessarily think it will be a straight up cult like S1. Probably just a super ancient conspiracy of sorts that uses the Crow as a symbol. So similar, but different.

why the need for a secret cult or anything mysterious?
i wouldnt be suprised if frank's wife is somehow behind this whole thing..

So you can watch the second season without having to worry about being spoiled about the first season right? If so, I think I'll jump on. Rachel McAdams after all.

Yeah, completely different story and characters.

Yep, each season is completely self contained. They're almost like separate films made by the same writer.

i really hope hbo green lights another season...despite the negative critics..

I hope there's some vague explanation as to how Ray survives. I mean other then "he's a fighter".

Hell you'd at least expect the hank schrader full season recovery mode at least from those blasts?

The only believable option is that Bird-man didn't actually want to kill ray just hurt him or whatever.

do you really have to ask this question ? wer are talking here about nic pizzolatto...

Not as creepy as the Yellow King, but close.

The Yellow King was the shrine a lunatic built, a symbol that victims link to their trauma. The Crow Killer is an actual person, which makes it just as creepy to me.

That's the scene from the therapist's office. Pay attention to the painting in the background. He's the early front runner for the Crow Killer. They were both pretty tall and skinny. Plus, the therapist knew Ani's father, who more or less is the leader of a cult.

HBO has never been one to pay mind to what critics think. Well, except maybe for John from Cincinnati.

:awesome:

(Note - spoiler in case you haven't seen Ep2 yet.)

Two theories:

-He was wearing a bullet proof vest.

-Some kind of bean bag shotgun ammunition.
