HBO's True Detective - Part 2

Damn, they went all Lynch on that opening. Did not see that coming.

Anyway, could anyone make out what that mask the figure was wearing? It kind of looked like a doll but could have been an animal mask too.

All I saw was white. Couldn't really make it out.

At first that mask looked like a plastic plate...

But, I froze a frame and it looked sort of Japanese-esque. Very flat but angular and weird eye/mouth holes reminiscent of their anime masks/evil characters.

I was kinda bored this ep.

Wasnt a fan of the surreal opening.
I did like McAdams and Kitsch being paired together.

My main complaint...really my only complaint is that they dont know how to balance the characters well. Kitsch is too seperate from McAdams and Farrell. Also Vaughn's storyline is just not grabbing me.

If I was them I wouldve focused on Kitsch, McAdams, and Farrell.

Called it about Kitsch character though.

EDIT: Damn people are really going after Vince Vaughn for his character/performance

We're almost halfway through and I feel like I can safely say this season just isn't doing it for me. My love for season 1 might be a part of that, but a much bigger part is that this season is just very poorly executed thus far. There seems to be no design to the overall story at hand, it's just kind of... there. And there really are too many main players. Vince Vaughn isn't doing terribly himself, but his character feels extremely unnecessary, or at least him being at the forefront does.

So far this season is lacking anyone or anything half as interesting as Rust. I knew this season might struggle to move out from under the shadow left by Rust, but damn. Everyone's just unlikeable, mopey, brooding, "**** my life" types. Vaughn is the only one who is of any interest to me at this point, because he seems to have the most potential due to his involvement in organized crime.

So far I'm not invested in the mystery at all, and with 3 episodes down, that is an issue.

And am I wrong or was it implied that Kitsch and his male buddy hooked up? Kitsch seems to be uncomfortable remembering "those three days" and his buddy "doesn't want to forget". Am I reading that scene wrong or is there something there?

Well Rust was going to be hard to top anyway, but I'm finding it hard to consider how any of these newbies could even stack up to Marty.

Oh yeah, he's gay. And even that doesn't get a f***ing rise out of me. :o

I definitely think that was what happened. There is still something a little off about the season. Even without comparing it to last season I only find Colin Farrell's character interesting, and I think that has more to do with Colin's performance. I think almost everyone called Taylor's character "twist" in the first episode, and honestly I don't buy McAdams in her role at all. Maybe that's the point of the character and it becomes a little more obvious later on, but she seems to be trying a little too hard to be tough IMO. Like when she threatened that guy. I didn't believe her. I thought he'd give her the tombstone piledriver right there. I don't know how I feel yet about Vaughn either. I probably would have gotten someone like Josh Brolin for that part. He can do weak and unsure one minute and then rough and intimidating the next. I don't really see it with Vince yet. Also I'm just not that into the case yet either.

Also (i think this has been mentioned already) it definitely feels like everyone is a little too similar in their torment/messed up ways. I feel like in season 1 both Rust and Marty were messed up but in totally opposite ways. Here it feels like everyone is the same level of depressed. I'm gonna stick around because I've liked every episode a little more than the week before and it's not bad, but it's definitely still not engaging me like it could.

Yep. That's how I took it too. Which explains a lot of his actions in the past episodes.

I agree on all fronts.

To me, for the next seasons I think they should remember to keep it smaller and I think it would benefit to have one director again.

Everyone's just unlikeable, mopey, brooding, "**** my life" types. Vaughn is the only one who is remotely interesting at this point, because he seems to have the most potential due to his involvement in organized crime.

Nah Man it's pretty clear. Him and his friend flipped it around when the lights were down.

On the whole left by Rust and Marty. I just think the performing hasnt really been up to snuff. None of these people are bad actors. And yes that includes Kitsch and Vaughn. Kitsch was good in Friday Night Lights and Lone Survivor. I just dont think theyre given anything to do. The only one getting some real substance to me is Farrell's character and honestly I dont need to see the stuff with his kid/wife

honestly I don't buy McAdams in her role at all.

Kinda weird point, but does anyone think she always sounds tired. Like her character always sounds like she rolled out of bed a minute ago. I mean I guess that kinda works with her hard drinking lifestyle but idk

I think a big thing this season is missing that last season had was the playing with the time periods. Stretching the events of these characters' lives over a decade and a half. I mean, they could always do a jump forward at some point, but they're missing out on telling the early part of the story from the perspective of the older version of the characters.

It's early, and Im not completely writing off the season, but IM just curious...

What do you guys want for Season 3? lol

I really liked an idea of a season being set in Detroit

I do miss that.

I also dont think that the murder is that interesting. I mean yeah the way he died was messed up but...idk Im just not involved in this case at all.

Glad to know I'm not wrong that Kitsch's character has played for the other team. Definitely explains his actions and conflicted demeanor. Poor guy needs to admit to himself who he is.

It does seem immensely less interesting than the creepy conspiracy s*** last season.

I liked the first episode because I acknowledged that it was a pilot. I liked the second episode and the jaw dropping cliffhanger. I was bored and disappointed with the third episode. I now know why the critics were mixed after watching the first three.

I am not invested in the storytelling whatsoever aside from Colin Farrell. He is the saving grace. I am so bored of Kitsch and Vaughn's characters in particular. I have no interest in the murder plot. I really need the episodes remaining to get me back into this. Last season shot into the stratusphere in episode 4. I need this season to do the same.

This is pretty much my sentiments. Colin's character is keeping me vested.

Strange how I don't care about the murder mystery at all and the connection the victim has with Vaughn's character. I don't really care about his problems :csad:

It's strange but I don't really care about the murder mystery since the guy seemed like a horrible human being the first season you cared for the victim here not so much

good call on the kitch character someone mentioned he might me be gay
they didn't outright say it but it very clear him and his "friend" had relations

I got a feeling Vaughn's girlfriend has something to do with the murder

So it seems like the theory Paul is a repressed homosexual was accurate.
Vince Vaughn isn't doing terribly himself, but his character feels extremely unnecessary, or at least him being at the forefront does.

I actually like Vaughn's character Frank and I am a fan of Vaughn's dramatic work in the nineties but I can't help but feel his character might of been better off if some else was cast in the role.

I'm just not feeling that Vaughn is this tough guy gangster gone straight who is suddenly in a desperate situation.

My early guess is that Frank's wife Jordan is involved in bringing Frank down for some reason.

I like Ani's "cheerleader on an oil rig" line.
Nice to see Fred Ward still getting work.

Damn. Richie Coster was chewing the scenery in that office scene.

I came up with an two idea of it taking place in Miami. The first with homicide detectives having to solve racial murders linked to this religious racial cult. The second with narc cops having to solve a drug related death involving Jamaican or haitian drug gang. The second idea could be really fun with the voodoo stuff tying in with the weird cult like stuff from these past two seasons.

Remember those times when it was rumored that S2 will be about these strong female characters? Who are those besides Ani? Is it supposed to be Jordan?

I wouldn't even go as far as to say Ani is strong what ever that is. She's just got a lot of issues herself.

Colin Farrell is on his game on this show though.

That would be really cool and would fi with what the show has done.

:funny:

On hindsight, I probably just misremembered it and it's not "strong" but something along the lines of big central female roles. :funny:

That's probably it.

Didn't Jessica Chastain turn a role down this season? I presume it's the role Rachel McAdams is playing.
