HBO's True Detective - Part 2

I have a feeling Kelly Reilly's role will expand as the show goes on.

On hindsight, I probably just misremembered it and it's not "strong" but something along the lines of big central female roles. :funny:
Pizzolatto said it'd be about hard women and secret occult history of the U.S. transportation system. I kinda think he was joking based on the "secret occult history" thing because that's when everyone was coming up with their crazy S1 theories, but the interviewer didn't pick up on it.

That would be really cool and would fi with what the show has done.

:funny:

Yeah I don't mind another homicide related murder mystery but a narcotics related murder mystery involving drug gangs could be cool. I got that idea based off Rust's narc talk from a season ago and him going undercover in episode 4. Thought it be cool for an entire season arc with other characters and new setting.

Kelly Reilly is on this? Well then I really do need to see it. :funny:

I thought this episode represented a step back after last week, especially in the dialog department. The main problem is that the characters deliver their rather ridiculous lines too earnestly; a smile wouldn't hurt matters. What this show really needs is some levity. There's a pretty large main cast, at least one should be funny or happy-go-lucky. Everyone's kind of a drag, though.

I knew Ray would survive so I wasn't surprised to see he's only been injured. He continues to be my favorite character and I'm still really intrigued by the storyline involving his wife and son.

I want to see more about Ani and her background in the cult. I'm starting to really love her character and her relationship with Ray is the best part of the show. I wish it were really just about those two trying to solve a murder.

Frank and Vaughn both were better for me this week. I guess the murder of his new business associate confirms that Caspere's death is linked to the railroad...unless there's more than one murderer floating around, or Frank was somehow connected to Caspere's sexcapades.

Woodrugh continues to be useless, albeit pretty. Yeah, he clearly had a gay experience in Iraq that still troubles him. He needs to get more involved in the case.

I'm guessing the mayor's son had something to do with the woman's disappearance. I wonder if the woman is Tasha? Oh, and that was Andrea from Breaking Bad in the mayor's mansion.

I second the people who called for future seasons to be set in SoFla and Detroit. Those would be some awesomely atmospheric locations.

Even though I don't care much for two of the main characters and the dialog can be pretty terrible at times I still enjoy this show. The hour really flew by and I'm curious to see whodunit and why.

Is anyone else especially bothered by the mayor, the guy is a walking cliche. I understand he's supposed to corrupt at all but his whole character is cartoonishly over the top.

I don't think there needs to be as much levity as much as there needs to be some kind of catharsis for the respective struggles of these characters. I loved the finale of S1 because Marty/Rust had just gone through so much depressing crap, that just seeing Marty cry tears of joy from seeing his family and Rust sorta become more positive was incredibly cathartic and made the entire season great.

Of course, for that to happen, we need to be invested in these characters and while my favorite character is Ani (incredibly biased towards McAdams), the only character we've really sorta gotten to see struggle with anything is Ray. (I like Vaughn, but Frank's arc so far hasn't really gotten me that invested) So I understand it when people say that Velcoro is the most interesting one thus far. We're getting some more stuff with Paul and that's cool, and while I was into last week's episode, I can definitely see the season lose more people if there isn't more of an overarching plot I guess.

I think S1 was really helped out by its setting. Louisiana, the Southern Gothic horror...it was like another character in itself. LA so far hasn't been as good. There's the symbolism with how Venti is like, a wasteland and how its corrupt nature has manifested itself in its people but yeah.

I thought it was hysterical how he was throwing a tantrum threatening Ani's career and everyone in the room was pretty much ignoring him. Some mayor lol. :funny:

I saw that the IGN pointed the same thing out.

I cant comment I dont know enough about it

I was wondering why the movie director (who was written to be a crummy individual) resembled Fukunaga. I didn't know that those two had problems with each other.

Fred Ward looks like an older, world weary version of Jon Bernthal.

I guess it could have been, but I didn't look too much into it because I always think of Fukunaga wearing glasses, not the braids live Vulture said (the guy in TD just had his hair pulled back).

I definitely noticed that resemblance to Fukunaga and read about some of the bad blood between them, but don't really know anything to comment. It seems waaay too coincidental though that they would hire some Asian guy with a man-bun though. And it's not like Pizzolatto directs these things, why would Janus Metz have any beef with Fukunaga?

Still, it's probably nothing for us to mull over (though if this season doesn't reach the heights of S1 then we'll definitely be claiming for Fukunaga again)

Totally didn't catch that Bohemian Grove stuff. That would make the season a lot more interesting. But it might end up in the rear view mirror kinda like how Carcosa and the Yellow King was at the very end of the season.

yeah man he is the definition of over the top and his son is even worst

really pissed that some people really dont get the fact that these season there is much more going on, bigger scale, with season 1, the main focus was marty and rust, it was easier going on with the story, smaller scale...much better to handle...this season you just have much more on your plate...not that easy..

Yeah I know LA has been done to death in films and television shows but they still could of done a better job making the city its own character.

I'm not feeling this season too much, however I hope it still does well. I like the idea of the anthology format and I feel there is a lot of potential for this show in its future iterations.

Finally after 2 just ok episodes this 3rd one seemed to kick it up a notch. Just one notch, to be sure but it's positive development. This season is definitely going different than the 1st. Granted, I didn't have to watch that one week to week like this season. I binged it all in 1 day. Loved all the episodes but the last where they tripped and gave an unsatisfying conclusion to the whole Carcosa story line. This season seems more of a slow burn but if it sticks the landing of the finale' better than season 1 did then I may end up preferring season 2 more in the end.

Oh and that new intro/title sequence/credits is nowhere near as good as season 1's.

I find the debate over the opening credits to be silly. I watched them once then just fast forward through them now. I do that for every show.

same.

Very few shows do I watch the opening credits on every viewing. Especially with HBO and SHowtime where the credits are/feel longer

Oh I do too. But after seeing both, the first season's is definitely better. I even downloaded the song. I won't be for season 2. Just don't care. It IS notable though since most shows don't change their intros from season to season.
