HBO's True Detective - Part 2

Fargo is so much better. Don't get me wrong I loved S1 of TD but Fargo has everything. Noir, comedy, action, interesting setting, amazing characters, interesting plots and twists. Just the trailer for S2 was more interesting than the 5 episodes we've gotten of TD S2.

Kill them all, save yourself.

Anyone think this season having essentially 4 leads and thus less time for singular character depth and development compared to how well season one was able to do it with 2 leads is part of the reason for the complaints?

That part shook me at first since I hadn't been following any production stuff with the show and thought going in it was going to be a similar format with Farrell and Vaughn as the two co-cop leads. I've grown to like all 4 parts and how they're coming together, but the show has really shined to me in the moments where Farrell and McAdams are together, gives a bit of the feel of last season's duo

Not to change the subject, but someone at work recommended I watch Fargo if I liked the TD kind of stuff. You guys agree I should check it out?

They're a little different, but I can see where people draw comparisons. I'd definitely recommend Fargo if you like crime drama. Also be sure to see the film first, if you haven't already -it's not necessary to enjoy the series, but you'll appreciate some stuff a bit more.

Their scene together in this episode was my favorite in the episode. One of my favorites in the season actually. It really shows that The Black Rose seems like this pit where these lost souls gather. These four leads really are these lost souls scrambling to find their way in L.A. L.A. feels more like a prison that they can't get out of. Which is really this noir trope that you see.

Yeah, their car rides earlier on have been scenes that stuck out to me, especially since they were just starting to work together and it gave the feel of last year a bit.

The only character I haven't really enjoyed yet is Kitsch (sp?). I don't much care for his story or see where it fits into the grand scheme, but I'm assuming his threads will ultimately come into play in the last few eps. I mean he's got the whole sex scandal thing, possible gay hookup, mom problems, and random preggo gf, it just seems like a lot of random threads with no real direction compared to the others. Idk I could be overthinking it Lol.

I wonder if the muted reception to this season is going to have an effect on what kind of star power they can get going forward for the series?

The True Detective brand is arguably not as hot as it was a year ago to be part of.

I think someone like Val Kilmer would be good in this show. Kilmer needs a comeback role and he can put in a good performance when he wants to.

Kilmer had a comeback role in Entourage.

Possible

Kitsch bums me out.
Ive liked dude since Friday Night Lights. But that guy has just been in a decline since then other than Lone Survivor and I hear The NOrmal Heart.

He's not a bad actor and even in the movies I don't think he was bad. But in True Detective I don't think he's good. That scene in the car with Farrell, his acting was so poor. I was really hoping he would show people his skills again

I'm in the minority that is enjoying this season.

Although, I think once the season is over, and I can just marathon the entire thing I will like it waaaaay better. Something about waiting a week between episodes is making it a little hard to follow everything going on.

But I like how slow the plot is moving along. It's called True DETECTIVE not True Hollywood Action Hour Featuring Cops And Stuff.

As someone else said, it's not that it's a minority that likes it so much as it is that the season is, evidently, getting a very mixed response and has been really divisive so far.

It's divisive because of the fanboys S1 made from Rust Cohle.

I can understand why early on people may not have liked him. Even if the whole "inner turmoil from homosexual tendencies" might be a little bit of a played out trope, I think his acting has been phenomenal as it's been building to a head.

The last two episodes really detailed that after he woke up in his buddy's bed and then that shouting match with his mother. Nothing but intensity and raw emotion there. It actually showed me something that, as an actor, I didn't know he had.

Funny, my husband and I had this very conversation yesterday. :p

Thought tonight was a really great episode. Now listen I absolutely love the first season. and that stands on its own as its one thing and in high regard for me. But does anyone else like me still really like this season? I'm enjoying it, obviously it's not the first but I'm liking it a lot still and loving these last few episodes too. Ready for the last 2.

Im not liking this season and it has very little to nothing to do with how I feel about the first season.

Holding this as it's own thing, to me it's still kinda boring and scatter brained.

On tonight's ep: It's was ok. The tail end was a lot better than the beginning and it saved the episode. Vince Vaughn's character though...dammit man, he is just so boring

I find it scatterbrained as well. I have all the eps saved. I'm hoping that a binge watch when it's over will make it make more sense. :(

Agreed on all of that.

One thing that can't be denied however is that Colin has been the MVP in Season 2.
