BvS Henry Cavill IS Superman - Part 1

On the last couple pages I see hardly any "complaints" about Cavill's acting. Most of it is praise and there are a few critiques.

There were a great many things I disliked about MOS, but Cavill was not one of them.

Would it be reasonable for me to say that I know better than to take anything seriously from someone who views MOS as fantastic?

Pffft, you take things way too seriously.

First of all, I specifically said that I was teasing about my last comment. Based on my other conversations with you, I should have realized you would miss that, since you missed the obvious greatness of MOS.

Secondly, the gist of the past couple of pages has been "Henry is an ok actor, but not really, and he liked MOS, so clearly he has no talent or taste". Of course, that isn't specifically what anybody has said, but it's been implied that because Cavill is a young actor, that he somehow doesn't know a ****** script when he sees one, and since he really seemed to like the script, well, he must be dumb.

Thirdly, I'm getting a puppy!!! I know that has nothing to do with the topic on hand, but I wanted to share anyway. :hrt::hrt::hrt:

People are so harsh on MoS it's not even funny.

Annoying behavior doesn't excuse annoying behavior. The only reason I called him out is because he consistently gets defensive over even the slightest bit of criticism. I'd do the same if someone consistently went out of their way to comment on how ****** it is.

Says the one complaining and whinging about people intelligently voicing concern and critique about the film and it's lead actor. Not surprised you'd confuse this with "complaining" though.

Sorry. I'm laughing so hard I'm crying here. Give me a sec.

Shame on them for bashing poor Henry like that! How dare any utterance that isn't pure praise leave their lips! Yeah, "complaining". Pfft!

^^^ You know, it is actually possible to dislike something and not be a complete raging jerk.

You are "intelligently voicing concern and criticism" of MOS? Your views sound kind of like a hypcritical view of MOS actually.

^^^ You know, it is actually possible to dislike something and not be a complete raging jerk.

It's also possible to let someone intelligently voice their critique (which is NOT complaining) of a film/actor without being a jerk to that person about it. These aren't praise boards.

Yes, we were a page or so ago, before you came in whinging about everyone "bashing" Henry. Shall I point it out to you?

You're not intelligently voicing it. There are many people who can do this on the board and you're not one of them. You just seem to get angry and spout hate. I'm wasn't saying people have no right to voice opinions. It's all about how you voice them. It's called politeness.

I love this AnnoDomini (Batgod rest his soul) behaviour. And what i like the most about is that if you ask a MoS/TDKT fan he can point out every single flaw in these movies. We know what it's there but we can either look past it or the merits outweight the flaws. Man of Steel is an epic film in every way, perfect ? NO ! but we don't really care about perfection. It got so many things right and to me it's my favourite Superman since All Star Sups and my personal Superman, if he existed thats how i would want him to be.

They took risks, they made a pulp 50s sci fi that can actually live without the title "superhero movie". Show it to someone who doesn't know who Superman is and they will have a blast. My grandfather who grew up with War of the Worlds and The Day the Earth Stood Still told me " i never cared about Superman but this was an awesome science fiction, it reminded me of my youth" to me thats beautiful. They say the movie is joyless ? F them. Hope was a big part of the film and if the philosophical elements are considered "too dark" or "pretentious" then awesome, i'd rather have that than Iron Man 3 humour and Kat Dennings one liners(and i liked Thor a lot).

I'm sorry, but...what about this post has anything to do with what I just said?

Slumcat:
Marvel heroes also get angry and sad and hung up but they also get happy and amused and excited are wonderfully humane. The joie de vivre is both infectious and life affirming.

My response:
It's the classic, juvenile (mis)understanding that acting po-faced and "serious", instantly equates to making one "mature" or lending some sort of pathos.

Actually being mature means understanding that you don't have to take yourself so gosh darn seriously all the time. That's what I got from MOS- it felt like a kid begging to be taken seriously by dressing up in Daddy's clothes (which makes sense, because, well, Snyder). It had none of the wit, verve, class or inventiveness of the other movies tone it was trying so hard to emulate.

And then this exchange:

Anita:
I don't think Cavill is as good an actor as Bale. He doesn't have the sensitivity. But the biggest weaknesses of MOS didn't come from Cavill's lack of sensitivity around the part. The flaws already present just made it look more flawed.

My response:
Absolutely, but I'd argue that this is more to do with the efficacy of the script or tact of the director more than the actor though.

And then Tempest comes in with:

Of course, most of the people on here complaining about Cavill's performance hated MOS, so it's no surprise that they can't do anything but **** on every aspect of the film, regardless of whether it has any merit or not.

Huh? Where's the hate. And certainly no one was complaining about his performance or "bashing" him as an actor. The exchange above was an intelligent critique/discussion of what was done well and what wasn't until Tempest showed up and got defensive. I even went as far as to say that Henry was one of the best parts of the movie.

That's how it went. Intelligent conversation interrupted by someone who has completely misread what was being said and goes on the defensive instantly. If anyone was impolite, it was Tempest with the initial personal attacks about how it was obvious I couldn't see the "greatness of MOS" (as if).

My comment wasn't just about your posts in this thread today, but your posts in general. I've noticed your posts in a few threads. And that statement about juvenile misunderstandings in your first quote is pretty rude.

However, you did respond to me in a fairly civil manner right now, so that is appreciated.

And of course, you're not the only poster who has ever been rude. I'm sure I've done it too and I feel bad about it. And I think it's something people should work on. Just because it's the internet doesn't mean we should be jerks. It is possible to have civilized debates.

That wasn't the problem.. laughing as arrogant and #$%# over a movie that clearly didn't deserve that kind of nosense... but keep going that only make the movie even greater and left you in a "silly" situation..

Well my friend glad you are so fun, but as I´m defending MOS, I would defend other great movies as TDKT, X-men first class, Iron man I, Avengers, X-2, Watchmen, STM, SII yeah none of these movies are perfect but made a radical change in their times giving respect to the characters and having a pretty decent story and they're so great that deserve a little of respect and sorry if I put a little defensive when I saw that kind of nosense..
You know you're the man :woot:

Welcome, Krypto! ^^^^^:woot::woot:

I know, right? I'm naming him Clark. My mom thinks it's after her home town, so she's really happy. I don't have the heart to tell her that I'm a sad fan, and that the name actually is from Superman. :D

Critique and criticism are not actually the same thing. A critique is a non-judgmental view of an object or person, and is an open-dialogue. Critiques focus on the positive as well as the negative, and are generally a well-balanced view of the subject.

Henry Cavill's performance in MOS is that he's a little rough around the edges, and while talented, he could use a little more loosening up, and he could work a little on his timing. I felt like there were some awkward deliveries of lines that, if he had a little more experience, would have been done with a little more finesse. Overall though, he did a great job as Superman, and I look forward to seeing him grow as an actor as he continues his work in MOS and other films.

Balanced, positive, while acknowledging the issues. That is a critique.

Criticism is an absolute, judgmental view of something.

Cavill was wooden as Clark. Of course, a lot of that is probably due to the script, which was just terrible. Then again, he liked the script. And he doesn't really seem to have any chemistry with Amy. They're just kind of there on screen together. I don't think they're even friends. People in other films have said he didn't go out with them much after work, and he probably didn't go out with anyone on MOS either. And he makes weird faces when he's in scenes. I don't think he can convey any emotion at all, except for maybe three emotions. RDJ is so much better about this. And IM3 was a better film than MOS, and Goyer sucks. But at least Henry looks the part of Superman, except for the fact that his costume was too dark, and didn't have the trunks, and he doesn't have the spit curl. Is his hairline receding? He doesn't seem to have much of a sense of humor either.

There are ways to critique someone without being a passive-aggressive bully.

Sorry. I'm laughing so hard I'm crying here. Give me a sec.

MOS was the greatest film ever created. I'm making a monument to it out of bottle caps.
