They didn't need to. 20 months before the film even released, there were hundreds and hundreds of shirtless photos from the shooting of the oil rig sequence which were all very widely circulated on the internet and as there were no official stills released till a month or so before the official release date, were used with any and any and every MOS article for nearly two years. Some of these pics, mind, were released by the studio itself as paparazzie pics.Poppycock, if that were true then the whole marketing campaign would have featured at least one still of Cavill shirtless.![]()
Then there was the big final epic 3 minute trailer that was before every movie for 2 months. The movie has two shirtless scenes and the trailer featured both of them.
And then of course they released that training feaurette which featured Cavill working out shirtless.
So it was definitely used for promoting the film. And extensively.
