I don't think Uncle was ever expected to be a blockbuster type hit, so I'm not sure if "flop" quite applies, but I think being well received is more important than huge box office in terms of HC's future prospects. He needs to be in some good movies.

UNCLE definitely had a big budget and was in place to be a potential franchise. Being well received is great, but this is all about the receipts.

I thought it's budget was only like 75 million. I mean it not succeeding wouldn't be shocking to me but I don't think it has some huge budget.

There was talk about Richie going over budget awhile back. It was on track to make 20m opening day last time I saw.

You mean opening weekend? Because 20m opening day is good. Mission - Impossible:Rogue Nation made 19 million on it's opening day.

Okay it supposedly went over budget but how much over budget is the question.

20mil opening weekend sounds doable I guess. MI5 was tracking to do 40mil and did 56 million though so who knows. If I had to predict I definately don't see it doing well though.

What kind of competition is it going up against on opening day?

Straight out of Compton I believe, which will probably do good for what it is. I'm not stressed for U.N.C.L.E because WB aren't exactly pushing it like they believe they have a blockbuster on their hands and I don't know what the reviews will be.

FYI:Mission Impossible was tracking to do 35-40 million on it's opening weekend. The new estimates are 56 million. Most of that is due to the positive reviews. If Man From Uncle is good it could have the same run as Kingsman: A Secret service, another film that was tracking lower (30 million) than the actual numbers.

Yeah, and if word of mouth is good, that alone will be somewhat beneficial to Cavill's career. Even when a movie doesn't perform all that well, people generally take notice of stand-out performances.

I haven't seen any TV spots for UNCLE yet. WB needs to market! But as long as HC comes out looking good and the movie isn't declared a Lone Ranger style disaster, I don't think he'll be affected negatively. Some times it pays to be the brightest star in a lousy sky.

Lone Ranger was a disaster because if cost 200+mil and starred Johnny Depp, there is no chance of that happening. Flop perhaps but another Tomorrowland, Jupiter Ascending or Lone Ranger? Doubt it.

Re: Lone Ranger, I meant critical disaster.

Just because you haven't seen any TV spots doesn't mean there aren't any. http://variety.com/2015/film/news/t...takes-top-spot-for-tv-advertising-1201549901/ The movie might not be a massive hit or anything, but so far, the people who have seen it have been raving about it. I doubt it will be a huge flop. It will probably do alright for itself.

The budget was cut to 75m after Cruise was no longer attached, I believe. So even if Ritchie went over, it probably wasn't allowed to be by that much. And the current 20 million OW tracking is actually up from where it was before SDCC. Again, I don't think it's going to set the world on fire, or anything, but yeah, it's probably not going to be a mess.

With the exception of Fury Road, WB has been having a pretty stinky summer, "not a mess" might be quite a relief to the studio at this point :funny:

I honestly don't watch much TV. And ic23, I wasn't implying that my not seeing TV spots meant there aren't any.
You kind of did with your "WB needs to market" statement.

I grew up watching THE MAN FROM UNCLE.....so I'm looking forward to the new movie. From the trailers I've seen, I like the looks of it. I know some other old guys (like I am) who are also looking forward to it because they are fans of the original and this looks like a fun respectful retelling of the characters.

San Andreas didn't review well and I had no interest in it but it was a hit after making 460mil on a 110mil dollar budget. It was more successful than Mad Max financially. Vacation did just greatly disappoint though. They didn't have any sure things this year so it's a mixed bag.

While I like the Sherlock movies, I still think of Guy Ritchie as the guy who made Swept Away; like around the corner there'll be Madonna calling a guy Pee-Pee in his movies.
