How I Met Your Mother - Part 4

I hope the Mother plays a big part in the remaining episodes and not these cameo appearances like she was before. They need to tell her story from this point as well and show what she's doing. The thing they've made clear is that the whole series is very much her story as well as Ted's and the journey they both have to go through to be ready for each other.

And maybe she has already met Robin before the weekend. After all, she met Barney prior to it, and Lily on the way to it.

She also picked up Marshall in her van.

She also picked up Marshall in her van.

I know, but I left that out because I was wondering whether that was after she had already arrived at Farhampton. Didn't she steal Darren's van? So maybe she was driving it around, and Marshall wasn't far from Farhampton when she saw him, and so she went back that way.

I don't think it was still part of her journey to Farhampton, because she took the train there. My point in the previous post was that the Mother met the other two prior to the actual weekend.

So is Robin the only one The Mother has yet to meet…in terms of us seeing them encounter each other?

And for good reason I think. She's the bride, Ted's "lost love" and probably the most important woman in his life up to this point.

Maybe she will introduce her to him. A passing of the vaginal baton if you will...

Highlights from a Q/A From Reddit with Carter and Craig:

  • When asked about The Pineapple, Carter said "maybe we'll find out eventually" where it came from. He later added: "You might find out what happened with the pineapple eventually. We had always said we'd never reveal it, but now I'd say it's fifty fifty. It's always been an appealing idea to us artistically to leave it as the one mystery that never gets solved. But on the other hand, we do have an explanation for it that we like so it may make its way into these last few episodes."
  • When asked about the spin-off "How I Met Your Dad", Carter said that it's Emily Spivey's show and he and Craig are there just to pitch the ideas, if needed.
  • About a fan asked if they could reveal anything about tonight's episode, Carter said: "The last shot of tonight's episode is maybe the weirdest, most Fellini-esque thing we've ever done, but every time I watch it it breaks my heart a little more. I'm really proud of tonight's episode."
  • Carter said that "we'll definitely get to see the entire gang with the Mother."
  • A fan asked, "have you considered showing Bob Saget and the older version of the mother in the series finale" and the reply he got was "Stay tuned...".
  • Britney Spears was the one who contacted them to be on the show and she specifically asked to be in the episode "Ten Sessions". "We got a call a few weeks after the writers strike ended saying that Britney Spears wanted to be on our show. And she specifically wanted to be in the episode "Ten Sessions," which sent a chill down our spines, because that's the one where we meet Stella. I immediately imagined Britney playing Stella and had a minor panic attack, because it's such a big role and needed an proven, experienced actress like Sarah Chalke. But to her credit, Britney liked the character of Abby, and wanted to play that part. So we said sure! And by golly she put our show on the map. It can't be overstated. Britney Spears rescued us from ever being on the bubble again. Thanks Britney!"
  • When asked if we'll see flashforwards of the gang, Craig said "we will see more and more flash-forwards in the remaining 8 episodes. There's an episode called "RALLY" coming up in a few weeks where we do a whole bunch -- everyone gets a flash forward peek into the near and far future..."
  • When someone asked about Scooter, Craig replied, "You may not have seen the last of Scooter..."
  • There will be a "twist" at the end.
  • When asked about Robin becoming a bull fighter, Craig replied: "Stay tuned -- we will get to it! We haven't forgotten!"
  • One of the last scenes will be set in MacLaren's.
  • When asked about Robin Sparkles' return, they reply was the same: "Stay tuned...people do tend to sing at weddings..." He later added: "Maybe not a song, but a performance isn't out of the question."
  • Ted's daughter's name DID come from the Lucky Penny.
  • Jennifer Love Hewitt was the "a pretty famous actress" (Carter and Craig have mentioned this before but never said who she was) that turned down the role of Robin because of Ghost Whisperer.

They wrapped up a few of the major loose ends. Three really good episodes and now a break.

Yeah, I really enjoyed tonight's episode, much like I did the one a few weeks ago, because it dealt with some of the bigger issues that have been out there for most of the season. Particularly the Ted and Robin stuff. Can't wait to see where they go next, and hopefully it isn't filler stuff to kill time until the Finale.

Why would they show Bob Saget and hire a different actress to play "older Mother"? That's just a really odd fan question.

I mean I get where the fan would be coming from but it'd make absolutely zero sense. Especially when #1 Bob looks nothing like Josh and #2 we've already seen older versions of Lily, Marshall and Ted.

But we haven't seen 2030 versions of any of them.

We have seen 2029 Lily and Marshall. When Marshal opens up Lily's letter to him.

One year can clearly change a person. :p

Didn't enjoy tonight's episode as much. I didn't like the filler stuff with Barney. That seemed a bit pointless. I also hoped the mother would play. Ted seems to have forgotten about La vie en rose.

I thought the Barney stuff was clearly the worst part because it felt like a different, more cartoony version of the Barney we've known. But I think there was some purpose behind it since we saw him re-write the Playbook, so I assume these guys might be featured in the spin-off, or it might lead to Barney realizing that he prefers to be single after all, even though it looks like he goes back to to get married at the end.

As for Ted, I don't think he forgot about her, I just think Barney's disappearance took more priority for him, especially since he was still in the state of mind of trying to help Robin as best as he could before he finally decided to let her go. I think there was actually a lot of substance in this episode, mostly because they weren't trying to be too funny with the serious issues.

I thought the two guys were going to be in the spinoff as well. But I think that storyline was just Barney letting go of his single life once and for all. He lived the single life again for an hour and then passed the torch.

I'm tired of the Ted/Robin stuff. Have mercy already, even if it was done fairly well tonight.

Based on the tone of Saget's voice, I still believe that the Mother is still alive in 2030.

Am I the only one who thought the ending was unintentionally hilarious? It just struck the wrong chord for me, not sure if it was the music or Robin just up and floating. I get the idea they were going for, I just think they didn't execute it correctly, I kept waiting for Future Ted to make a joke but they were sincere.

Count me relieved Ted/Robin might finally be over as a subplot.

I randomly decided to watch the first episode earlier today for the first time since I started watching it about three years ago and I'm glad I did, otherwise that whole thing at the end where Ted asked Robin if she was giving him the look the night of their first date would have completely flown over my head. I had completely forgotten Ted told his kids at the end of the episode he asked about that look years later. Talk about picking a good night to rewatch that.

Also, they are on a roll. Last three episodes have been some of the best in years. Even the subplot with Barney that I thought would go nowhere ended up being important in the end. My hope is now that we are under two months away from the last episode we have burned through all the filler and the rest will progress the story and tie up loose ends.

They've done weirder things than that.

Like setting an entire episode around a fake story leading to a slap. :o

Not letting that go.... good episode tonight, though.

I'm so glad that Ted is finally done with Robin. It was just getting frustrating to watch.

For at least two weeks, tonight is the last week of new episodes for all programming until after the Winter Olympics.

What? I thought HIMYM was going to have an uninterrupted run now until the end of the series in March, which is why it was ending earlier compared to other series.
