How New Line Cinema Destroyed the Friday the 13th Franchise

I really hope this is good news for us F13 fans and means we'll get a new film in production very soon.

I love all of the F13 films in some way but I admit the New Line films weren't as good as the previous installments.

What about Candyman? Another forgotten horror title. I am planning seeing it soon.

Candyman is actually one of my favorites. I guess I'm a bit biased though since I'm a huge Clive Barker fan.

Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street (the originals of both) were eons better and two of the few slasher movies I actually like.

Same here. I watched all the sequels for Halloween, Nightmare and Friday the 13th growing up and even when I was younger I didn't care for them all that much.

New Nightmare was actually fairly decent though.

I think the originals were definitely much better than F13, Jason had a better and more fun overall franchise than Halloween turned out to be though.

I like Freddy vs. Jason, so I don't consider it a failure in my book. Last chance Robert Englund got to play a half decent Freddy anyway. As for the rest, I don't care too much. I like them, but Halloween has always been a better series even in its worst installments (except I think the F13 remake was slightly better than Zombie's remake/sequel.) Between the 3, Halloween and Nightmare were always about equal, with F13 far below.

It means Paramount can make Friday movies again and ignore the continuity of the New Line sequels or the remake. After all, this will be movie number 13, the proposed final F13 film (not like it really will be though).

Freddy and Jason is a fun movie, it played extremely well with a packed audience.

The supporting cast is awful, but Freddy and Jason were great in it.

I only came for Freddy originally, so it was great fun. Too bad he only got one mediocre kill though.
I remember my packed audiences too for that film. I especially remember because I was 14 and my Dad bought tickets for a friend and I to see it, and then my best friend had a party and his parents took all of us to see it again.

For anyone willing to give a newer slasher franchise a try, I've been pretty surprised by the Hatchet films. The second was a lot better than the first, but they are both great, and Kane Hodder is great in dual roles in the film.

I saw the first Hatchet a coue years back. It was good stuff. Need to see part 2.

Lets be honest here, this franchise wasn't that great to begin with.

I think everything in Freddy vs Jason was terrible besides the cartoonish showdowns. I'm glad it happened , but wish it would have been done in the late 80s.

The Friday the 13th films have always been a guilty pleasure for me. I thought it started to go downhill after part four anyway. By the time Jason reached Manhattan I don't think it made a difference what they did next.It was inevitable for them to drop the ball. The last few films are awful. They could of been better , but at least Jason Goes to Hell , Jason X , and Freddy vs Jason could be considered one-offs. Kind of like a comic series.

I actually enjoyed the reboot. It would of been nice to get a sequel from there. At least we never got Bride of Jason.

Slightly better than Zombie's degradation of Michael Myers? It was leaps and bounds over that putrid Halloween remake (and its even worse sequel). I thought Platinum Dunes actually got Jason right in Friday the 13th, where Jason was a force to be reckoned with. Ignoring some of the troublesome plot areas, the main character(s) wasn't annoying for a change.

If Paramount decides to go for a sequel to the 2009 remake, I am there. Derek Mears deserves a second shot... he was great.

I honestly don't see the big fuss F13 fans are throwing over the 2009 remake. The original movies weren't exactly good movies, and it pretty much stayed true to the formula for the most part. And aside from Alice, Ginny, Megan and Tommy, the protagonists in the original series were just bland and forgettable.

True. While the NOES films were certainly more creative in content, and overall better made, the Friday the 13th films were much more formulaic in their presentation, which ultimately attributed to the franchise's success, as it gave it's audience exactly what it wanted. The Halloween films, following the Rick Rosenthal sequel, were very hit-and-miss. With 3 being considered disappointing, 4 providing hope, and 5 being incredibly mediocre as a film, and at the box office as well.

Though to be fair, 1989 was a pretty bad year for the big 1980's horror franchises in general.

I have to FULLY disagree, it's one of my favorite franchises in film history but if your not a fan of schlocky slasher cheese fests, then it's probably not your cup of tea.

I would add also the psychological aspects many people neglect to see in these films. Like the deep bond Jason has with his mother since she is the only person in the world that loved him and gave affection.

I mean what does this do to a child? How does his deformation twist his mind from a young age with the other kids teasing him and all that.

The 2nd better than the 1st!??

I know I smoke alot of weed but come on you can't be that high.

Danielle Harris' terrible southern accent was god awful. Thank god tony Todd did his best to keep that movie fun(Adam green can film a great death so the kills in the movie are top notch)

But The first Hatchet IMO is one of the greatest slashers EVER.

Can't wait to see the 3rd with the full swat team coming to kill victor

I agree 100% but the gentleman's name is Derek Mears. :yay:

Danielle's southern accent is awful, but Hatchet 2 is still probably a bit more fun than the first...it had more Tony Todd, which is a plus.

I don't think either is drastically superior to the other.

Every friday film has a charm. Honestly aha, they could have a jason movie where Jason drops a deuce in the woods for 80 minutes and it would still reek of 80's nostalgia.

They thought it was too generic, bland, lacking in any creativity, dull...

Personally I think the reboot is as good as Jason has ever been and I liked the 3 main human characters (Danielle Panabaker, Amanda Righetti and Jared Padalacki).
It really wasn't creative and may have had a 'more of the same' feel, but it was still a nice nostalgic thrill ride with a great Jason and a solid cast.

What Zombie did with Halloween was so different that it really wasn't Halloween.
That trashy, redneck, vulgar style and tone work fine for The Devil's Rejects, Halloween, not so much.
I loved Rejects and I was excited when Zombie first signed on, but I ended up absolutely detesting both of his Halloween. They're my two least favorite Halloween movies (and yes, I'm even counting the Busta Rhymes doing martial arts/reality tv installment in that).

To be fair, I only saw the remake once, and I just didn't like it all that much. Of all the remakes of classic franchises, its the second best to the Texas Chainsaw remake. I too hate Zombie's Halloween movies quite a bit.

I just thought the second was more fun. Danielle Harris didn't bother me, and I was glad Tony Todd had an expanded role. Too bad he won't be back for the third.

I can see why people HATE Platinum Dunes for what they did in The Hitcher and A Nightmare on Elm Street (especially with casting Rooney Mara, of all people, as Nancy).

But they kept the same formula for the Friday the 13th remake, and kept Jason down to basics. I don't know why some die-hard fans hate the film, for me it's on par with the better installments in the original series.
