why did they change the actor from the cameo in avengers 1?

Because he's not the same level an actor that they wanted to trust with such a huge and crucial role. Josh Brolin is brilliant in everything he's in, and will no doubt kill it as Thanos when he's given more character development and lines.

i guess but honestly I think the actor before him would've done a fine job anyway knowing how important his role is and what not.

Perhaps, but where's the evidence that he has that type of range? I've seen a couple acting reels but they still haven't showed too much, and he doesn't have the experience acting alongside huge heavy hitters and not getting lost in the shuffle like Brolin does. Brolin has also killed it as George Bush in W., so we know he has the depth and range to do almost anyting, and was the standout in MIB3, out-performing Will Smith, to name a few.

brolin is a great actor but i don't think it is always a mistake to get less budget actors into crazy roles. so that black guy should've been kept as thanos. doesn't it also save the studios money?

It's definitely not a bad thing, if said actor outperforms everyone else in script reading but it shouldn't just be done for the sake of it. Look at it this way Chris Pratt wasn't even on Gunn's radar for Starlord and the idea was laughed at by him numerous times, until he finally read, and that knocked Gunn's socks off, outperforming much larger names than himself.

With Damian Portier being Joss' friend, I'd imagine that he had a chance to read for the role, but ultimately Brolin was who was picked by Gunn, Joss, and Feige.

i'm not saying have damian be thanos just for the sake of it... he was the frst actor to play thanos in the mcu, and just going off that i'm saying they should've kept him. brolin will be great i'm sure but i don't think damian would've messed it up.

Is this an actual conversation happening? The actor in question didn't even have any lines. He was a place holder. He didn't leave some kind of stamp on the character. Seriously, this is the weirdest of expectations from obsessive fanboys I've heard all week.

Yeah, I've never understood why people wanted him to stay as Thanos. The dude isn't even a proper actor

Because he looked waaaaaay more like classic Thanos than Brolin's Thanos.

Now, I'm all for Brolin portraying Thanos, but they've gotta fix Thanos' voice and face.

"obsessive fanboys"? you don't know who you're talking about here. i don't care how insignificant his part as thanos was and i also am not raging about them changing it to brolin. if this is what you call obsessive fanboyism then fanboys deserve more credit than you give em and the word obsessive holds much less meaning in your terms.

i've already pretty much stated why. for some of the same reasons I wanted the rock as bane but it doesn't matter because josh brolin is thanos.

The guy who played Thanos at the end of Avengers isn't even an actor. He's a model. Thanos is being set up as THE big bad of the big bads in the Marvel Universe. It's essential to have a top quality actor playing him.

As for Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy? I liked the voice and his demeanor. But the eyes have gotta be changed. They are too human for my liking. They should be black holes and they should glow when he gets emotional, whether that's anger or malevolent happiness.

Yeah, we definitely traded up with Brolin. I doubt even Damien Porter believed he'd be reprising the roll. Brolin will deliver a performance that can match the level of performance of our on screen Avengers, even via mo-cap.

As for Thanos' design, I did like the glow of the eyes and the darker skin tone from the end of The Avengers better than the GOTG look, but there's no reason why that can't be tweaked leading up to Infinity War. I fully anticipate the MCU to give us the definitive representations of two iconic villains in both Thanos and Ultron.

Definitely. I have no issue believing that when Thanos actually uses cosmic powers his eyes will glow in very colours like they do in the comics. I loved the voice and demeanor of Thanos in GOTG, his body proportion were incredible (as he was very much Hulk sized but probably taller), and the armor was very loyal to the source material.

The only things I would change if I could, are his eyes, skin colour (dark purple), the smile he gives off (needs to be bigger and show more teeth), and his armor should have blue on it to match the gold like in the comics! Everything else, is great!

I really hope we see what Thanos can do before he acquires all the stones and the gauntlet (which I’m assuming is going to happen based on the teaser), like in terms of strength, durability, etc. Once he has the IG though, of course he’s going to be unlike anything we’ve seen in the MCU before, but it’s just interesting to see what he’s capable of at his base level.

He’ll probably be at Kurse’s level before the IG, maybe?

I really expect the super-low bar for Marvel villains to rise massively with Spader's Ultron and Brolin will need to try and at least match that.

That wasn't a proper acting part. I think I could have done it myself. Thanos was only cast when Brolin was cast, no change. Some guy was saying the same thing about Apocalypse at the end of DOFP. Pretty sure I could have done that too and I wouldn't then expect to be officially cast as Apocalypse and Thanos lol.

I feel like villains should get better in the sequels cos they can focus more on the villain and not just the origin for the heroes.

Of course it hasn't worked particularly well so far.

what was even the point of hiring an actor for that then? if he had no lines they could've easily just cgi'd the whole 10 seconds that they showed his face.

Probably just for a stand in before they added the cgi for the scene. The guy wasn't there for his acting ability.

I hope Marvel studios does not fall into "maniacal villain" trap and just make Thanos some cartoony crazy maniacal villain. Marvel Comics has done a good job, basically since Infinity Gauntlet, fleshing out Thanos and making him a much more interesting and somewhat sympathetic character. Don't blow it, Marvel Studios, and make Thanos simply a more powerful version of Ronan, who is a much more interesting and dynamic character in the comics than what GotG portrayed him.

I certainly hope not. Thanos without the gauntlet is more powerful than the Silver Surfer, smarter than Reed Richards, and stronger than the Hulk. Even without the gems he should be more powerful than anything the MCU has ever seen.

Yeah good theory. Makes sense but they haven't really focused on the villain enough in some of the sequels. The Winter Soldier worked but Malekith and Whiplash not so much. TDK obviously had a huge Joker focus. I think Whedon really cares about making a good Ultron though so I think this will fit your theory, especially as the originial film needed a lot of introduction just to get the heroes together and fighting on the same team.

Yep, even a small time actor will be a pro who will allow everything to be done in minimal takes, even if they are just doing mo-cap. If it was me it would probably take a couple of hours to get a natural Thanos smile. :woot:

You mean that cartoony looking face at the end of Avengers? I am so glad they changed that. Yuck.

Also, they were never going to cast a stunt man as Thanos, any one who thought otherwise should not reproduce.
