I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

When it finally comes out what Reeves had going on I'm sure it's going to make me look like an enormous jackass.
I will ban you personally.

I think the fact that many feel Superman's script was under baked and could have used another pass will probably get Reeves some further appreciation in hindsight if the script is as good as suggested.

Also pretty ironic since Gunn has this whole I don't greenlight anything until there is a script I am happy with policy. :funny:

It is ironic with the script, but truthfully, the strike probably had a lot to do with it and needing to get the script completed.

Superman is not exactly a glowing endorsement for Gunn to be the Quality Control guy for scripts.

Yeah, it's a reassuring policy...depending on the guy in charge. :whoops:
I haven't seen Superman yet, but seeing a consensus around a supposed flimsy script is a bit of a letdown as it's the aspect I always find the most sloppy in these films and one of the first thing that, I think, needs to change in the genre.

------

I hope that the long gestation period of Reeves' screenplay for the sequel will result in something really solid. For all the ambitious ideas and intentions of the first film, my appreciation of it continues to be hurt by what I think of the script.
The problem I have with it is that I still find that the investigation at the heart of the story is just too weak while being also kind of over-written. I wasn't surprised to found out that Reeves had different writing collaborators depending on the film's acts, and it reinforces my belief that a final pass or the intervention of a script doctor could have been beneficial.

That's way I think it's a good thing that this time he was able to team up with someone right from the start. As said, I don't have any storyline or character wishes for the sequel: I just want a movie where I don't find myself questioning things every 20 minutes when I was also completely mesmerized by the world he creates. That's just too frustrating...

IMAX should put tickets on sale for this two years in advance.

James Gunn on Matt Reeves script for 'THE BATMAN 2'

"I like it. Yes... We're headed in the right direction. So there's some things we still got to work out, but it's headed in the right direction for sure."

o__o

James just trolling the "We want The Batman in the DCU" crowd  :o

Yeah that part concerned me

I was worried about Gunn taking charge for this reason. His sensibilities are basically opposite of reeves and his notes for Matt and plans for his DCU will inevitably clash with the Batman trilogy I fear.

Also minor minor minor thing but he didn’t rave on it in anyway like he did for say “the flash”. Just a tepid, awkward “I like it”

Gunn’s just a really, really annoying interview subject. The statement could probably be said about most movies this stage of production, just normally someone with Gunn’s job would say oh yeah it’s awesome and move on. He’s been publicly ******ing Matt for months so I’m not actually concerned.

I’m not sure I’ve ever been as exhausted by or sick of hearing about a public fandom figure as Gunn.

Lol if he gave the compliment and moved on, some people would still just say he’s lying about it and merger and blah blah blah.

This is nothing.

That's meaningless and I wouldn't read into anything he said. He is just being vague so as to not overpromise. Most scripts need some fine-tuning. Superman 2025's script needed serious fine-tuning and the movie suffered from it.

As of right now, The Batman is the most successful movie DC has had since Aquaman in 2018. I highly doubt that Gunn has much if any power over Reeves. If he did, he would have seen Reeves walk when they killed the rest of their projects.

For the record: I don’t think anything’s wrong. I just think Gunn comes off like an arrogant prick when he talks about other peoples work. See: his comments about Sgt. Rock and its team.

Based off of that interview, it definitely seems like that would be Gunn's preferred outcome. Interviews like this might be as much about convincing Reeves as it is about the fans.

I can't imagine that Gunn is excited about creating his own distinct and memorable Batman when there's one that's already proven to be a success. It'd probably make his job a whole lot easier if Brave and the Bold starred Pattinson, and Reeves was onboard with his universe taking place in the DCU.

Being that, reading between the lines, it sounds like Gunn likes the script but has some notes. There's plenty of time until shooting is due to begin so I'm not too concerned about that.

Gunn giving Reeves notes is some dystopian clown world ****

*insert Steve Carell “THANK YOU” gif*

I’m so happy someone else said it. I’ve always thought this since he got hired. Even in 2023 something about his interview rhetoric rubbed me the wrong way but it’s in full force now. I think having a big shot millionaire CEO like David sucking him off for 3 years straight inflated his likely already sizable ego.

He talks about other people works and his own work in such a… I don’t know a vaguely smug pompous kind of way. He talks like he’s a Nolan/Tarantino level auteur. He forgets he makes cgi soup kids movies and literally writes lines like “yesterday, I took a poop, shaped like a fish, even my butt can make metaphors!”
