I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

Penguin was better than The Batman. I love the characterization of Reeves Batman and Pattinson’s performance but the story of the movie itself wasn’t really that strong imo. We’ve got multiple Batman movies that I think are way more enjoyable to watch- with way more rewatchability. The wait just isn’t worth it if the quality of the script is on par with The Batman. We can do better, we’ve gotten better Batman movies in the past from directors that aren’t so ****ing slow

So lame. Penguin had better writing than The Batman, was triple the length, and didn’t take 20 years to come out. Don’t think the quality of this one will justify a nearly 6 year wait.

Man, what a way to kill momentum after landing a home-run w/ The Penguin. Reeves needs to update his process, or get a better co-writer than the Project Power guy

The first Batman was great but it’s not like the script was Chinatown or anything. Unless this is a significant improvement on that front, I can’t see why this took so long to write beyond Reeves just not having any ideas. If Batman 3 even happens I hope he gets a co-writer or something

Taking too long, I barely even care at this point. Bring on the Gunn Batman at this point. Penguin is the best thing to come outta this universe

Is this just a premature reaction/decision to how well the Superman trailer was received. For instance they were counting on batman to be the plan B if Superman fails again but they have underestimated how the GA have taken to this new trailer. Im just talking out aloud. Batman has been the face of DC since 1989 I just feel with this news on both batman films being delayed they want to leave him on the backburner with the potential of other characters getting the spotlight for a change let alone Superman himself.

Nolan would have shot and released both Oppenheimer and a $250m Odyssey movie in between The Batman’s I & II lmao

I highly doubt it. There had been very little news for a while before that; I think most people who have been following news about the sequel were already expecting a delay.

I hope Reeves doesn’t write part II with a cliffhanger ending like all those TV show season finales before they get cancelled. Write II with a definitive ending because it just may as well be. Provided Part II gets made.

I guess last thing I’ll say on this is I do think the long wait between installments will hurt this box office wise. Probably gonna see a drop

Oof. I realize we had a global pandemic and two industry strikes mess with the timeline, but the second movie in the series will now release a full decade after Reeves was first announced to direct The Batman. That’s if it’s not delayed again. I know it’s not a totally fair comparison, but…Nolan was first announced for the Bat-gig in 2003, and 9 years later he had wrapped up his trilogy, and had also made two little movies called The Prestige and Inception within that timespan.

I realize Reeves has a slow methodical writing process, but this now officially getting a bit strange. I don’t want to speculate on what’s going on because I honestly have no idea at this point. We all know Reeves cares about this, very deeply. It showed in every frame of The Batman. But I’m definitely beginning to think that level of care is becoming a double-edged sword, and is potentially causing some issues with him moving forward confidently. Or him trying to do these movies while also being involved with the spinoff shows is just too much. Unless it’s something else related to his personal life or some studio politics at play, I truly don’t know.

They are messing this up, Screwing up both DCU and Reeves batman verse with this dumb approach. If they can make Pattinson work in DCU they gotta go for it tbh.

Is there any way Gunn encouraged Reeves’ slow tendencies and let him push it to 2027 so people would lose interest and be angry at
him therefore moving on to the DCU version…

Just kidding. Or am I…? 😉🤣

I honestly don't think this delay has anything to do with the DCU. And I don't think Gunn would want to merge these universes against Reeves's wishes—unless Zaslav demands it.

I mean, all these conspiracy theories are crazy. If anything, DC Studios would want to rush this movie into production so they can be done with this universe asap.

I can't see how the universe presented in The Batman and The Penguin would fit into a pre-established DCU. If the DCU was fully rebooted using The Batman as its' foundation, then maybe it could work. But shoehorning Superman and co. as an afterthought? Nah.

On the plus side, we can have two more seasons of The Penguin while we wait

I get why you said it. Its because of the tug of war between Reeves universe and Gunn's vision for DCU Batman.
Yeah, like other said, it's a very strange situation. Just like post BvS, with all the drama about the bad reception of it, we don't know what to expect anymore. Making us care about a new bat-universe when we're already knowing Reevesverse, it doesn't make sense.
And I know Batman has lots of movies and that's great, but we're talking about a sequel of a well received movie who got expanded with an excellent spin off, so it makes sense to keep the interest of the audiences. I with Reeves the best and hope it's nothing personal and serious, but this is frustrating on so many levels.

Or maybe it has the opposite effect. Who the hell knows at this point.
