The Dark Knight In Heath We Trust: A Ledgerbration: The TDK Joker Appreciation Thread

I know there are mixed opinoins of Jett on this place, but I have to say his opinion of Joker in the third film is almost spot on with what I've been saying (except for his choice of actors, I think it should be someone closer to Heath's age but he could be just using DDL and Depp as examples of talent level)

My first initial thought would be no, but I keep asking myself how significant a role was planned for The Joker in a possible third film? Only Christopher Nolan and a select few know that answer.

Now, the rumor is that the late Heath Ledger was signed for two films and the plan was for him to return in BATMAN 3. How big of a role, I have no clue. Some say it was sizeable, some say it was to be a cameo. Like I said, only Nolan and company know the answer.

The dilemma I see revolves around the late Mr. Ledger. From what is being said by those who know, his performance as The Joker in TDK is absolutely brilliant. I mean, they are already talking Oscar here, OK? Would anyone want to follow Heath as The Joker?

Let’s say that they decide that The Joker’s presence in the film is absolutely necessary. If that were to be the case, I think they’d have to find a “Johnny Depp” or a “Daniel Day-Lewis” -- someone with a pedigree -- to do it. Someone who would not be intimidated by -- or only provide an impersonation of -- Heath’s Joker. Someone who can make the role his own, yet honor his predecessor at the same time.

In my opinion, I say no Joker in BATMAN 3 unless it is absolutely vital to the story for The Joker to be in the film. While I’d prefer not to have The Joker return, I wouldn’t consider it “disrespectful” if the part were indeed recast.

The bottom line here to me is how essential is it to the proper completion of this “Trilogy” to see The Joker again? If it is imperative -- an absolute must -- then recast the part with a quality actor. If not -- meaning the story can go on and be finished as intended -- then no Joker.

I think that's totally fair, but then again I'm a little biased because he's agreeing with me.

Wow. Jett shares the same opinion as the majority of the board. Recast only if absolutley neccerssary, find someone good. Except he needs six paragprahs to spell. it. out. for you.

Everytime I've been in this conversation, most people are like "HELL NO DON'T RECAST" except for you I think. Maybe there are more people that share that opinion, but they haven't been around much when I'm here.

I think the general opinion on the matter is that if Joker played a vital role in the third movie, they should recast. But if not, they should leave him out.

Yeah I totally agree with all that's being said.

I think recasting would be pretty weird UNLESS absolutely necessary, but mentions of the Joker maybe still on the loose would be a nice touch.

Nice lil read :)

I'm gonna go and have a look for that commercial - I've not seen it yet.

If they're going to dedicate TDK to Heath Ledger, they had better dedicate it to Conway Wickliffe too (the guy killed last September), or it's going to be really disrespectful to only acknowledge Ledger's death and cheapen the whole gesture.

He called Heath's performance "Almost certain to Oscar nominated" awesome. I don't watch Lost, which tv spot was shown.

It was the one with Fox's line about "a three button suit", which I believe is the third TV spot.

Any potential "recasting" of the Joker is going to depend on the extent of the role in BB3. If it's just a cameo, they could probably do without. If it is a starring role (which I highly doubt) then it should be recast. I think it has been pretty clear that Two-Face will be the main villain in BB3. They could still use Scarecrow if they need to...or they could bring in Catwoman or Riddler to change it up a little. I would be shocked if any potential Joker role in BB3 was anything more than a cameo.

They could just mention he's in Arkham without showing him in theory.

It's possible Nolan has some film of Heath that was shot during TDK, that could be put to use for a cameo-like situation in the third film.

If this was posted...Ignore it I guess, I just read this.:o

The word from the inner workings at Warner Bros.: Heath Ledger’s family will journey from Australia to New York this summer for the premiere of "The Dark Knight." The film opens July 18.

Ledger as the Joker in this new "Batman" movie seems certain to be an Oscar-nominated performance. And I’m told the movie will be dedicated to Ledger’s memory, with the memoriam coming at the film’s conclusion. If that doesn’t bring tears and applause, nothing will.

The "Dark Knight" TV commercial during Thursday night’s "Lost" finale indicates that the Joker and not Batman is going to get the lion’s share of attention in this movie. Ledger was all over the commercial. I’m not even sure Christian Bale — er, Batman — was shown.

So we’ll get ready to pay tribute to Ledger, whose death was insanely tragic and unnecessary. And let’s hope the relatives in his non-immediate family, who love publicity, show some respect and keep their mouths shut and heads down this summer. A little propriety can go a long way.

Thanks for this info SML28. I wish I could believe this last part would be the case but I seriously could not believe the ugliness in the media in the weeks following Heath's passing. It made me see that industry---well heck, the worst of human nature, really--in a light that I don't think I'll ever be able to see past. I don't dare to hope that proper respect will be shown across the board---TDK in the news and in the theatre presents an opportunity to make some more bucks that those who don't really care about propriety can't pass up.

Heath Ledger's final completed film, The Dark Knight, will hit theaters next month, and Warner Bros. is making sure his work and legacy will be recognized.

The studio behind the Batman Begins sequel is planning a tribute to the late actor at the New York City premiere and has been working closely with the Ledger family to make it come to fruition.

If all goes according to plan, Heath's family will be flown in from Australia for the event and Michelle Williams, his ex and mother of their 2-year-old daughter Matilda, will walk the red carpet as well.

"Heath was a big part of this movie and everyone wants to show him the respect he deserves," a movie insider tells OK!.

The Oscar-nominated star, who passed away in January at the age of 28 from a prescription drug overdose, has already earned rave reviews for his portrayal of the manic Joker.

Shortly after his passing, Warner Bros. honored their star with a touching note on the official Dark Knight Web site.

"We mourn the loss of a remarkable talent gone too soon and the passing of an extraordinary man who will be greatly missed."

With each new snippet of his performance [the comcast imax featurette - interrogation scene] I am completely blown away! This will be one of the most amazing performances ever to hit the big screen. Such a fantastic talent we lost. :csad:

So good for Heath, glad his family are going and so let it be known, that in some way he'll never be gone and I'm sure this/his performance will be legendary. :)
