Sci-Fi Interstellar - Part 10

I didn't mind the ratio switch that much. Sure, at some moments the quick changes were a bit annoying but overall I wasn't really annoyed.

And unless Nolan's next film is at most 120 minutes, I don't see him going full IMAX. Isn't there a limit of IMAX film that can be used inside the camera?

I think it's 165 minutes.

The IMAX platters have a limitation on how long they can run. Basically, it's a projector limitation.

I don't mind the aspect ratio switches too much...BUT, I do think on the Blu-ray releases you should have the option to a watch a cropped version (which is what the DVDs have) so it's a consistent 2:35:1.

Nolan should absolutely not stop shooting on IMAX though. Not only is it the most immersive theatrical experience you can get, but the resolution is absolutely phenomenal and this is noticeable on across every other medium the film is shown on from 35mm all the way down to DVD. So all they really need to do is offer the cropped option for Blu-rays and I'd be happy.

I do think we'll see a full IMAX film some day, but that only will happen if Nolan and other directors keep working with IMAX and the company keeps making progress with the rigs they're developing.

Nolan could just shoot all the non-IMAX footage in 70mm film instead of 35mm film. Then the aspect ratio wouldn't change.

I agree. I prefer the theater experience. I'm sure the industry will adapt. The music industry was doomed with MP3 and Napster and while it's not in a great place now, it's recovering and it has adapted. The film industry will adapt somehow.

It could just be blind naivety talking but I agree that theaters will survive. Largely because I believe in the power of a good theater experience. It's something you can't replicate even with the best home theater equipment money can buy, at least compared to IMAX. A friend of mine has a setup that's pretty extensive and it's great to watch movies at his place. But when the choice is between that and seeing a new release on the big screen there is no choice for me as far as movies I care about seeing as soon as they open.

With the music industry it was a bit different because while the medium for obtaining and playing music changed the specifics of the experience really didn't. You still plug your earphones into a device to listen to music and that hasn't changed from the 8-track all the way to the iPhone. It's different with movies. The theater experience has become another option for seeing films but I don't think it's been made obsolete because of that. If anything it has more revealed its strengths as well as some weaknesses.

yeah i think you can only record like 5minutes of footage with one magazine.
Which isnt that much of a problem when you have 1-2 other cameras loaded nearby.. the main problem is the noise. every scene shot with imax has to undergo ADR.. which really sucks.

how is that ? 70mm and imax isnt the same aspect ratio.

imax is 70mm film horizontally with 15perf.

70mm is vertically with 5perf.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. It wouldn't change aspect ratios at home. Most widescreen TVs project both IMAX and 70mm as full screen. In that scenario either the IMAX footage will lose a fraction of the picture or the 70mm footage will have a slight distortion or a balance of both to keep it as clean as possible. It would be a slight compromise to avoid aspect ratio changes. Whether that's worth it or not is quite subjective.

So I was at work today and found a display for Interstellar. Both Blu Ray and DVD. But isn't this supposed to be released on the 31st? Either way, I picked it up after I got off work. Perfect birthday present to myself.

Yeah, next Tuesday. What store was it? Can't be a chain one like Future Shop/Best Buy for sure...

I'm pretty excited to check the movie out on Blu-ray next week, I've heard it's a gorgeous transfer. Now, to find a 3 hour block of time...

I'm still bummed it has a 5.1 track. I wanted to watch this with my 7.2 setup so bad. :csad:

I wonder if there's a dialogue only track. :hmm

Are we allowed to post GIFS from the movie here or what? I don't want to get banned.

Hold your horses AnneFan. We know you want to post gifs of your favorite actor.

But those Michael Caine gifs can wait a little longer.

Why would you get banned? :hehe:

On a serious note, movies are usually released in digital HD weeks earlier, so in that case, you should be good to go. ;) And it's not like anyone will ask you for a digital receipt around here. You just can't post obviously bootlegged recorded from an HD camera type stuff.

I was contemplating making some this weekend as well, go for it.

Yup. It should be OK once the Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital download is officially out.
