Sci-Fi Interstellar - Part 10

The ending is great. Happy end. But I still want a sequel...:atp:

So my husband got a GearVR to try making games on it, and the Interstellar trailer comes with the Oculus Cinema app. It is SO fitting to watch it in "Moon Cinema" mode, when you're watching your movie on a projector, sitting on the moon. :awesome:

Although I ruined it by complaining that the sun was too dim, the earth was too large, it was generally way too dark to be the "light" side of the moon, and why the heck is there popcorn next to me if I can't eat it with astronaut suit gloves on?! :oldrazz: [/Neil DeGrasse Tyson]

I don't mind the aspect ratio switches too much...BUT, I do think on the Blu-ray releases you should have the option to a watch a cropped version (which is what the DVDs have) so it's a consistent 2:35:1.

Nolan should absolutely not stop shooting on IMAX though. Not only is it the most immersive theatrical experience you can get, but the resolution is absolutely phenomenal and this is noticeable on across every other medium the film is shown on from 35mm all the way down to DVD. So all they really need to do is offer the cropped option for Blu-rays and I'd be happy.

I do think we'll see a full IMAX film some day, but that only will happen if Nolan and other directors keep working with IMAX and the company keeps making progress with the rigs they're developing.

IMAX is looking to completely replace their film systems. They're attempting to do so with their laser based projection and it is only a matter of time until they do so on the camera side as well.

What the hell is laser based projection?

Supposedly will be able to get much closer to the image quality of traditional IMAX film projection. The digital projectors they've been using are a long way off. I'm hopeful that laser will offer a good replacement for IMAX film and will make it easier to create a full Hollywood IMAX movie.

but its projection.. doesnt get you anywhere when you still film with 4K.

35mm is approx 8K
imax is around 18K

the capture medium sets the standard you need in the theater.

IMO it's takes you out of the experience and makes you more aware "oh this is a movie"

You're watching a scene then the aspect ratio changes(Bat pod sequence) to showcase the action scene

Then it's over(taking harvey dent out of the police truck)

^ I agree. That's why I've never been excited about the use of IMAX, particularly since we no longer have an IMAX screen in my state. So not only do I not get the experience, but when the movie lives the rest of it's life (aka on video, not silver screen) it's just a mtter of distracting aspect ratio changes.

The best option is the one BatLobsterRises suggested - having blu-rays with both options.

I'd rather have it as the director intended it to be seen.

If you want constant ratio watch the digital copy or DVD.

I feel bad having this early and still having not watched it, lol. Been too tired to sit through a three hour film. Hopefully sometime this week.

I don't mind the aspect ratio changes when there is some thought put into when it changes. In Batman films it always occurred at the beginning and end of major scenes. Rises had a particularly clever bit where the cut between aspect ratios was timed to coincide with a gate being slammed shut.

Interstellar was a bit of a mess in that regard. It would frequently cut back and forth or have 5 second shots in IMAX of a truck going down the road.

But damn did the extra image space help the space scenes. In particular, the in-atmosphere exterior shots of the ship which they filmed with the camera strapped to the front of a jet. In the 35 mm it was cropped down so pretty much all you could see was the side of the ship. In the IMAX version you really get to see the sky and landscape zipping by. Not the best planning though when the majority of people seeing it in theaters only have access to the 35mm version.

More.

I just did. Got the Wal-Mart neo-pack exclusive. :woot:

If I can fit in a trip to Wal-Mart today, I'm going to try to grab it. Do you guys think their exclusive edition will sell out quickly?

Depends if your WM is in a busy town and has a good stock quantity. Wasn't the WM exclusive supposed to be an online-only thing? I read it sold out online, so collectors may run and get it.

So my film cell is from a 35mm scene, unfortunately. Still, AnneFan you be jelly! :oldrazz:

I got the blu-ray in the mail today. Lol could that sticker on the slipcover advertising the inclusion of a 70mm film cell have been any bigger? That might be the biggest sticker Ive ever seen on a movie slip.

My film cell is an IMAX long distance shot of Cooper and
Matt Damon's
character walking across the ice planet. I think its when they are talking about the planet's surface. Ill post a picture of it later. Im really happy with the one I got. I was worried itd be one of the 35mm scenes or some boring shot or the paramount logo. Some poor bastard over at Blu-ray.com got a cell thats just a shot of the crowd of extras at the baseball game in the movie.

Haha yeah, I read some of those posts over there. :funny:

That would suck. That's what I'd get if I got that pack, with my luck.

Got the Walmart exclusive and the case itself is gorgeous, probably the best looking standard case in my collection. As for the film print goes I got [BLACKOUT]Matt Damon[/BLACKOUT]
