Interstellar - Part 3

i am used watching Nolan movies in summer. novembeeeeeeeeeer

Why are you guys still complaining about that? If anything, Paramount and WB decided on November because of the production schedule and the off-season period. The post-production turnaround would be very short if they released it in summer 2014, especially since they began shooting August 2013.

At least it's not in 3D.

I guess I know what Mathew means by his destiny lying above him. The shot of the ascending rocket is a metaphor of immense phallic explosion, nothing to do with actual space exploration.

i don't disagree, i just feel like this movie could use a different editorial touch (and i didn't care for how certain parts of TDKR were edited, but that's more an outlying example). it may still have a different feel to it, though, who knows. certainly the Lee/Nolan combo has yielded a lot more good than bad and some absolutely outstanding stuff, too.

I agree with you.

And this comes from a guy who thinks Prestige is a masterclass of editing for all filmmakers.

Rises really rubbed me the wrong way regarding Lee Smith. Stuff i had already saw in TDK , Begins and even Inception.

yeah, i gotta say, i did not like how the majority of the action was edited in TDKR. i dunno what went wrong because usually Lee and Nolan kill it on that front but in TDKR--well, let me put it like this, the opening to TDKR really works, no complaints there, and then the first Bane vs. Batman fight is just masterful stuff on every level. the chasing down of the computer and the fight on the rooftops...not horrendous, but subpar for their standards. and then the final battle, wow, really don't know what happened with that one. it almost feels like they ran out of time or something but it sorta feels more just like a collection of cool shots rather than an actual action setpiece. had so much potential.

still really like the movie overall and i will say that aside from some choppy transitions between scenes, the editing for most of the non-action stuff was really good (especially that denoument/finale, another example of great filmmaking on every level from Nolan and company). so, since Interstellar doesn't really sound like an action movie, per se, maybe even if Lee Smith is in TDKR form the editing will work great.

I just think Nolan was way over his head with TDKR. I just watched TDK last night and wow, that's a superior movie. That being said, in hindsight, TDKR had many great moments. I love Hardy's Bane. I think it's almost iconic now, and so far, Marvel hasn't been able to come up with a compelling villain like him or Joker. Well besides Loki.

I like TDRK, but yeah, the editing was clunky.

If his wife is dead I'm going to be rolling my eyes.
I love Nolan as much as everyone else but I don't get his obsession with main male characters having dead wives/girlfriends

Memento - wife dies (assisted suicide), haunts main character
Prestige - BOTH female lovers die (one via suicide)
Batman Begins/The Dark Knight - Rachael is killed
Inception - Wife commits suicide, haunts main character
Interstellar - [BLACKOUT]wife is doa[/BLACKOUT]

Its almost becoming like Disney's overuse of non-existent mothers, short chubby fathers, and little animal friends in princess movies. Or how so many superheroes are orphans.

do you guys think he's actually conscious of it, though, i dunno if he's talked about it before? i mean, you would think he would have to be or at least that someone would have asked him about it, but i'd almost like to think he's just blissfully unaware and then someday he's gonna look back and be like, "oh, bugger, all my movies have dead special ladies."

He is, He talked about using film noir tropes as easy emotional stakes for the audience to invest in so he can do what he really loves -- contorting and rearranging the structure of the plot.

His wife is really dead. :hehe: At least in the script floating around.
IIRC that script is a fairly early version, so Jonah had written that for Spielberg and it was just a coincidence when it arrived at Chris's doorstep. :oldrazz:

Didn't Chris or someone else mention that he makes works he responds to, and that's one of his greatest fears?

hmmm...I've read the interstellar script and I honestly think...

It would've been better had he not killed the wife and forced in a love story between the two main leads. But then again, who would like the main character if he was cheating on his wife patiently waiting for him at home? lol...I can definitely understand why he did it. Especially if he really wanted a love story in there

To be fair, he didn't write that version of the script....So, who knows?

Personally, the [blackout]romance angle between Cooper and Brand[/blackout] was one of the things I didn't like. It felt cliche and forced. It also reduced [blackout]Brand's character[/blackout]. It would be better IMO if that part is removed.

At the same time...

They didn't have an actual romance until they realized the time travel thing had already happened and everyone they knew on earth had died of old age.

But in this case, I can see why he did it. Leaving a wife behind on earth (if he wanted to have kids in the story) would beg the question of what's happening to her, etc etc, and he probably did not want that complicating the story.

Also, the part about this script being originally written for Spielberg, yadda yadda. :oldrazz:

It was the only thing I didn't like in the script. [BLACKOUT]It was just ridiculously forced and there was clearly no connection between the two. I felt that the only thing that connected them was that they thought they were the only humans alive at that point so Brand was like "Hey whatever, I think you're cuter than Doyle so lets do it. Woot" Basically :o [/BLACKOUT]

But it was obvious from the get go that he was going to go there (at least for me)...you can see it coming a mile away. However, like you said it would over complicate things

Well I will say that script has been revised since the draft we've read. So it's hard to tell exactly how it will all play out in the details.
