Oh they most certainly cross paths. HG has very much shown itself to appeal to an audience well beyond it's young adult readership. There's a maturity in the way the story and the audiences are treated which is something both that series and Nolan's films have in common.

So true. When I watched CF, my audience is entirely made up of adults.

Yep. I didn't see the first Hunger Games in the theater, but I did watch it on Netflix around a month before Catching Fire came out. Liked it a lot, so I ended up seeing Catching Fire on opening weekend.

Flip side is it's facing arguably more competition than Inception did. A Hunger Games sequel comes out only 2 weeks after Interstellar.

Not that the comparison is perfect, but there is plenty of room for both. After all, Frozen came out two weeks after Catching Fire and is still about to cross $350 million. While that is a family film and Interstellar is targeting adults, it shows that there is plenty of room at the box office for good movies during the holidays.

Coming out 2 weeks later is a lot different than coming out 2 weeks before a massive sequel. Catching Fire had already burned off a ton of demand when Frozen came out. Thor 2 is a better comparison. It came out the same weekend Interstellar is scheduled to come out and it got squished during its third weekend when Catching Fire opened.

I'd also argue that IMO Interstellar is more complicated than Inception. Also, Di Caprio is more popular than McConaughey.

But... Nolan is more popular than ever. So I guess it's a toss up?

I'm curious too on how Paramount will factor with its success.

I gave Inception the advantage when I said this but on hindsight, while Di Caprio is a much bigger star than McConaughey, Interstellar actually has A Listers (DAMON! Hathaway! Chastain!) in its supporting cast compared to Inception where the most well known actors in supporting roles were Levitt and Page and those two are B+ at best.

You know what I want to see more than Interstellar? Footage of the poor Paramount exec who had to meet with Nolan and try to sell him on digital. How long do you think that meeting went? Ten minutes, tops?

I didn't bother to include him because he's in both movies anyway. My point still stands. The supporting cast of Interstellar have more heavy weights than the cast of Inception.

Neither were big stars in blockbusters though. Page had X-Men and Inception, but she was not a big draw in either. JGL had TDKR and Inception and...are we counting GI Joe here?

(500) Days of Summer and Juno were fairly well-known for indies, but not big movies. Not to the point where everyone would have seen them.



I saw an LATimes version of the Paramount news, on Twitter. The title was something akin to "Paramount makes exception to digital movies rules" and my VERY FIRST THOUGHT was, "Nolan! "

And yeah, the discussion about digital with Nolan was probably 10 milliseconds long.

I'd consider Gordon-Levitt at least a rung or two up the ladder from Ellen Page as far as recognition.

And Anne Hathaway is bigger than Jessica Chastain at this point.

Leonardo DiCaprio is a bigger superstar than Matthew McConaughey (for that matter Leo's a bigger star than most people), but McConaughey's really on a roll having a career revival right now.
