For the first time ever, the virtual world of filmmaker Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated new film will be available to the public in select AMC Theatre locations featuring IMAX screens. People can sit down, strap in, and immerse themselves as they travel through the "Endurance" spacecraft in zero gravity through a custom Interstellar Oculus Rift experience. The tour kicks off in New York, with stops in Houston and Los Angeles, before landing in Washington D.C. at The Smithsonian

To bring things back down to Earth for a second (SWIDT?), this is kind of an interesting topic:

On one hand, I love how hard Nolan is promoting film. On the other, I do feel bad for the owner of small chain in a small town who was merely following the precedent set by Hollywood by getting rid of the projectors and projectionists.

Same time though, it's not like theaters in that situation won't be able to still open the movie digitally just a few days later. Film is basically a niche movement at this point, so the theaters that choose to cater to that market and share the passion for keeping film alive probably do deserve to reap some of the benefits when a big film like this is shot on celluloid. I do feel bad for the small and mid-level theaters that are caught in the crossfire of this 'war' though.

What does...

"Christopher Nolan is said to have made $20 million against 20 percent of gross for Interstellar."

...mean exactly?

Could it mean Nolan put up $20M of his own $$ in return for 20% of the gross ? In effect, betting on himself ?

Not saying that is what it means, but it is what I was thinking

From BoxOffice forum:
$20m is his fixed, up-front salary. In addition, he gets 20% of the "gross", although usually this means "adjusted gross" whereby the studio is able to deduct all sorts of amounts up front. Very roughly speaking, it's probably closer to the definition of "net", meaning that once it crosses a certain predetermined amount, Nolan will get 20% after that. (In all likelihood, it probably won't amount to too much).

This is different than 20% of the profits, because we all know Hollywood movies never actually make money.

well that beats the hell out of what I proposed.......

Im still trying to get hyped for this movie. I want to love it but everything I see is still a big eh. I'm sure it will look stunning and I'll be there in the theatre to see it for sure…but man I'm just not excited.

My school has a history museum with an IMAX theater, and we're going to get it released on November 4!

I am soooo freaking excited.

Okay, gif was wrong, but why would the news be removed?

IMAX-trailer №5.

It's impressive.
Google announced today a groundbreaking collaboration with Paramount Pictures for a first-ever multi-platform pact for Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated film INTERSTELLAR.

The partnership will feature initiatives delivered across Google platforms, including Google for Education, Google+, Google Play and YouTube. Together, the companies are helping moviegoers connect to the film through immersive experiences, exclusive content and detailed information on how to see the film, find showtimes and purchase tickets.

The partnership launched with the INTERSTELLAR SPACE HUB, a first-ever digital initiative supporting a film on a Google domain at g.co/interstellar. As the official website for the film, the INTERSTELLAR SPACE HUB features a Space Hunt content discovery feature and a movie ticket purchasing function, as well as links to a Solar System Builder app available via Google Play.

Nolan is working with Google to deliver information about the various film format experiences provided by movie exhibitors. This initiative will provide moviegoers with in-depth information about the distinctions between 70mm, 35mm, 70mm IMAX® film and digital projection, as well as 4k digital and digital motion picture viewing.

After audiences have seen the film, they will be encouraged to offer feedback directly to Paramount via the INTERSTELLAR SPACE HUB.

Said INTERSTELLAR producer Emma Thomas, “Having the power of Google behind our efforts to inform the audience and enhance their experience of ‘INTERSTELLAR’ is an exciting new development in the relationship between filmmakers and audiences. Google has provided the ultimate Hub for the theatrical experience, and now, for the first time ever, there is a mechanism for audiences to give direct feedback to the studio about the quality of the technical presentation.”

The companies will also collaborate on a Time Capsule project that compiles user- generated content into a short film that will showcase and capture the magic of the current human experience on Earth. This project, curated by Google Play and Nolan, will be available early next year.

The cast is also set to participate in a live Google+ Hangout on Air, to talk directly with fans about the release of the film.

Additionally, in mid-October, Google for Education will deliver its first-ever, movie-themed lesson plans, exciting students at thousands of schools across the country about the math and science that served as the inspiration for the film.

Said Brian Irving, global head of marketing for Google Play, “‘INTERSTELLAR’ is one of the most highly anticipated films of this year, and we couldn't be more thrilled to partner with Paramount and Christopher Nolan to bring the movie to life for fans around the world. Google is excited to help our studio partners develop innovative marketing programs that support the lifecycle of their films.”

Commented Megan Colligan, president of worldwide distribution and marketing for Paramount Pictures, “Google is at the forefront of exploring the unknown and seeking new information, two major themes in director Christopher Nolan's film. We are excited that ‘INTERSTELLAR’ is the focus of Google's continued innovation as we present this incredible film to audiences around the globe.”

INTERSTELLAR stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, John Lithgow and Michael Caine. With time on Earth coming to an end, a team of explorers undertakes the most important mission in human history: traveling beyond this galaxy to discover whether mankind has a future among the stars. Directed by Christopher Nolan, written by Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan, and produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Lynda Obst.

“INTERSTELLAR” opens in select locations on November 5 and in theaters everywhere on November 7, 2014.

That's really, really cool.

And omg that pic...I nearly spit out my coffee :lmao:

Man this is more than just a film, this is about getting excited for science and space travel. Nolan is trying to kickstart something in peoples minds.

The little girl I used to be wanted to be an astrophysicist, so I am over the moon. :awesome:

IMAX Trailer 5 description:
(No new plot spoilers in this)
It starts documentary style with JFK giving his famous space exploration speech, and cuts between Cooper sitting on the porch at night talking about the future of mankind. It then continues documentary style and has Apollo and Gemini astronauts giving their words of encouragement for continuing space exploration, with Buzz Aldrin saying, "we deserve more than making footprints on the moon..." It also shows DeGrasse Tyson giving some words of wonder about the universe, and Kip Thorne where he says the following: "It's gonna be damn hard to leave our solar system, but I believe we'll make it happen in due course."

Then the trailer launches off into orbit so to speak, with big, grand music which swells and seems to have a touch of an organ, and brand new wormhole and black hole footage - and it looks breathtaking and spectacular - remember that spherical shaped wormhole we first saw in Trailer 2 - well they show the Endurance going almost directly into it at a completely different angle than we've seen before - and it just looks spectacular! The huge IMAX screen is displaying the whole thing around you - it's as though you feel you're going into it too! And then, comes that huge black hole that we got to see for the first time at the end of Trailer 3 - well, in this new IMAX trailer, it was covering the entire IMAX screen left to right and top to bottom, and it appeared to be spinning, and I couldn't believe my eyes - it looked like the Endurance ship was going into the black hole, or at least getting so close to it, that it looked unbelievably scary and amazing and exhilirating all at once - this just looks to be the grandest space sci-fi exploration movie to date.

There wasn't any new footage to give away the plot, at all. There was also a lot of reused footage from the previous trailers - but the main new footage is at the start, with the stock footage of JFK, astronauts, and scientists, and the new wormhole and black hole footage, which makes me want to see this movie 5 times in the theater just for that footage I saw in this trailer! The combination of JFK, the astronauts, the scientists, the swelling music, and the new wormhole/black hole footage gave the movie the most grand anticipation and feeling of spectacular wonder yet out of all of the other trailers and tv spots combined - it was just special - I hope we can all see this new IMAX Trailer online sometime soon...

OK I saw the newest trailer at the theater when I watched Gone Girl, and... it was much much more effective on the big screen. Definitely a good trailer, and this is no BS when it was over people were actually saying "wow" and talking about it. The woman in front of me (had to be in her 50s or 60s) leaned over and told her friend "That looks amazing". So this film's box office may end up being substantial. Guess I should prepare to eat crow.

I really think so too. What a way to focus the power of mainstream filmmaking.

If this ends up being a giant climate change movie then Faux news will set out to kill it.

That is a little bit over the top I think

I thought movies are made for

A) As a job

B) For entertainment

This is a movie & nothing more

So the whole notion of film being a form of storytelling that you want to show the world and get them interested is gone?

Yes there is technically no need whatsoever for any movie ever but to say they some cant actually have a big influence or aren't ever made to get people talking is just stupid.

Especially when a concept such as Interstellar is heavily related to our world.
