Interstellar - Part 7

Which makes no sense considering you are a Superman person like me. But then again you aren't a Nolan person either, so you continue to vex me. :oldrazz:
I thought we were only talking about X-Men sir.

Butch, do you want me to bring up my scores for Nolan films to prove you wrong again? :oldrazz:

I am always talking about everything Sundance. Always.

And actually I would love that. So that when I see you already have a score for Interstellar I can call you out on your bias. :woot:

James Berardinelli gave it 4 stars, called it one of Nolan's best, and called it an immediate contender for one of the best movies of the year.

Memento-8.5/10
Insomnia-6.5 or 7/10
Batman Begins-7.5/10
The Prestige-9.5/10
The Dark Knight-8.5 or 9/10
Inception-10/10
Dark Knight Rises-6 or 6.5/10

I have not seen Following or Interstellar obviously. I am a Nolan fan, a sane one but a fan none the less.

So, it's almost 11:30PM over here in the east coast.

Reactions should flood Twitter anytime now. :awesome:

just got out of the IMAX screening.

I'm generally not impressed with Nolan. He's a great director, but his storytelling is usually a complete mess. this film satisfied me more than most his other movies. i liked it....im trying to decide how much though. my only real issues is with the climax...

I just got back from a real IMAX show, and make no mistake, that is DEFINITELY the way to see this movie if you can. The visuals and score are absolutely breathtaking that way.

That said...I'm not sure about how I feel about this film on the whole. It's a lot to take in, and I'll be seeing it again for sure this weekend to get a better handle on it, but one thing's for sure - it's not my favorite Nolan movie (that remains The Prestige). Without getting into specifics, I will say I think I felt about this movie the way a lot of people felt about Sunshine. That movie was actually the first one that came to mind for me when it was over. With bigger extremes.

interesting comparison. I just recently re-watched that and I thought it was great but could definitely understand the critiques about it. I was wondering if I would enjoy Interstellar at least as much as that. :yay:

I loved Sunshine, even with its change in the final act so that is all good to me.

Interstellar was f****** amazing.

It must be seen in IMAX. You know that feeling you get when you look up at the stars and realize how small you are in the grand scheme of things? That's what Interstellar is for its entire runtime.

So emotional - Matthew McConaughey and Mackenzie Foy are incredible.

And the scenes with
Matt Damon
are some of the best in the film.

And yes, Nolan gets his
stargate moment.

I think everyone needs to see this in the largest possible format. Even if those human moments don't connect - and I don't think they will with everyone, it has the clunky dialogue in most Nolan films - the spectacle is worth the admission price.

I remember someone said it was more 2010 than 2001, and it really is more 2010. That's not a bad thing for me, though. :woot:

I ultimately loved Sunshine, too. I don't know if I'll be able to say the same for Interstellar, but as I said, I need that 2nd viewing to sort everything out, lol.

Now that I've seen it though, I'm really curious about what Spielberg's version would have been like. I feel like this material would have been a more natural fit for him.

What was the change? Or you meant how it went off tangent with [BLACKOUT]the Pinbacker stuff[/BLACKOUT]?

I haven't seen it yet but I know someone whose review I trust who said that the emotional stuff felt a bit too on the nose whereas it would feel more natural for Spielberg. He said that it's like Nolan was way too conscious that he's been accused of being cold and he overcompensated. :hmm

The movie does get a bit weird at points, but it doesn't come out of nowhere. There were little hints sprinkled throughout the entirety of the film that let me still accept where it takes things.

There's some very powerful emotional stuff in here multiple times as well. Lump-in-the-throat type of scenes.

I'm trying to be pretty vague purposefully haha, but suffice it to say the wait for the next "Christopher Nolan movie" was well worth it.

That movie was ****ing incredible. Aside from some hyperbolic dialogue, I was blown away. Full review to follow.

I'd agree with that assessment. There's some dialogue in this that sounds like Nolan's inner struggle trying to reconcile the emotional vs. cerebral approach that just had me rolling my eyes. It's almost like Nolan himself is a robot trying to explain emotional content with logic/science, lol.

Yeah all that stuff was what I was talking about. To be honest with you when I initially watched the film I didn't notice how it went off tangent as much as other people did, that's probably why it never bothered me so much.

Well the "tangent" that people complain about with Sunshine wasn't a tangent - it was the main direction of the film that felt like a tangent because it altered course so wildly from it's original projected path. And that worked for me. The thing with Interstellar is (spoilers for structure, no plot specifics) [blackout]it has the same kind of deviation, where it essentially becomes a totally different movie, but the deviation in this one may just be too far from its original path for me to accept. Like it breaks away completely.[/blackout]

I dunno, it just didn't work as well for me. *shrugs*

Nice! Can't wait to see it for myself.

I'm curious how those scenes would translate to me since the emotional stuff were what I was looking forward the most. Ugh. I want to see it now. :woot:

It was definitely a WTF moment. I knew nothing about the film so I was definitely taken aback. It's like another movie invaded it but for some strange reason, I liked it a lot.

Did you read the Jonah Nolan version of the script? I'm guessing what you're talking about was the part that Nolan added/expanded?

Okay it's settled then, I need to re-watch the film haha, I do remember it feeling like it went from a Sci-Fi film to straight up horror a bit though, I'm definitely re-watching it in a night or two before I see Interstellar.

That's actually a good way to put it. :D And yeah based on what flickchick it might be a good accompaniment to Interstellar.

This reminds me of when I watched BB and TDK the night before seeing TDKR. Good times. :awesome:

No, I downloaded that script but opted not to read it in the end until after I'd seen the film. I'm sure I'll read it soon, but I'm not sure if what I'm referring to is what Chris added or not.

Im back and i thought Interstellar was brilliant.

A must-see in Imax, real Imax.

Interstellar was a movie that was complex, easy to understand at times, other times not so much....but the visual spectacle, fantastic performances, fascination behind the science (i repeat, fascination not necessarily a complete understanding) and the emotional gut punches is why i think it's incredible.

I dont get 2001, but it's one of my favorites of all time.

Even if i didn't understand the film, which i did, most of the time...it wouldn't matter. Because i felt it emotionally. That was the main thing i wanted with this movie and Nolan gave it to me.

Right now i have this and Birdman tied for my favorite film of the year. 4.5/5 for both.
