Interstellar - Part 7

Eh, to be honest...it's been surprisingly civil both here and at Nolanfaps. I'm pleasantly surprised with how people are taking it...so far.

Im surprised that death threats arent already being declared.

yeah, i mean, any system that tries to quantify a subjective overall reaction to a piece of art is gonna be massively, inherently flawed. it's fun to interact with those types of gauges but it's ultimately sort of "absured."

i like to read the reviews of the guys i most trust (right now, a couple of my friends and then Drew McWeeny and Walter Chaw) but i never agree with any of them 100%. forming your own opinion is, really, what most art wants you to do, anyways.

i haven't seen Interstellar, obvs, but it is interesting to note this growing trend of "it was too ambitious and failed on the execution" and so then the critic ends up giving the ambitious but flawed movie a lower rating than, i dunno, Battleship. i mean, i guess you can value the execution well over the degree of difficulty and that's perfectly valid, but for me ambition and execution are of equal merit (perhaps i even value the ambition a bit more since there is so little of it coming out of Hollywood these days).

no doubt, Nolan's movies can get a bit clunky at times and sometimes that only gets magnified because of how ambitious they are, but as someone else was saying, i've come to accept those "flaws" as part and parcel with some of the same things that i love about his movies (such as, the fact that he's even trying to convey some heady concepts but doing so through the vehicles of large-scale, popcorn genre movies).

can't wait to see this movie.

Wholeheartedly agree with everything here ^^

I was going to make that joke but then I realized that it was Nolan-mixed with Batman that caused a tiny minority (probably like 1%) of his fans to act in such a ridiculous manner.

Wow... I'm surprised that Rotten Tomatoes has the consensus up so quickly.

20 reviews hardly seems enough for a consensus.

Completely agree. They also have one for Nightcrawler after 27 reviews. I would wait for 100 or so before coming up with the consensus.

I'm still ****ing stoked as hell. What's with these reviews being filled with spoilers? I read the Variety review but had to stop 3/4 of the way in, and now I won't be reading any more of them.

Consensus at 20 reviews? It can still plummet or rise, we have at least 200 more reviews to go.

I find the divisiveness interesting, I'm hoping I'll end up on the positive side of things. One more week for me!

Yeah the reviews seem to be a d**k waving competition of who can reveal more first. I stopped after about 5 when in the headline title said something like
"Mcconaughey dazzles and Damon surprises in Interstellar"

I think RT should wait for at least 50 reviews to write that consensus.

At least 40 reviews and 5 top critics with a rating of 75% or higher.

New still.

I'm only reading the blurbs.

The last two are weird. One negative (despite the 3/5 score) and one positive.

Not every film need address the possibility of human extinction with the gung-ho silliness of Armageddon, but at least that was a space adventure. This is a science report.

So few blockbusters have an IQ over 50. It's important to celebrate this one, even if it comes up a little short.

When it comes to comic book films or conventional blockbusters 3/5's will almost always be labeled "Fresh." I guess the rules change outside of that realm.

I hate critics and especially RT scores.

RT is one frikin lazy way to judge a movie nowadays.

I heard that the individual critic decides if their review is fresh or rotten.

Ultimately, the "Fresh," "Rotten" tags are the responsibility of the critic, which makes it even more frustrating. If you don't like a movie then give it a bad score. Don't tip toe around it.

That was confirmed like a year ago though I'm not getting how thats a spoiler

Everyone has a different scale. 3/5 doesn't mean the same thing to everyone.

Way too early to be freaking out guys, RT changes their consensus all the time and the independent reviews will mostly be positive. May I remind everyone that Inception finished at 74 on Metacritic, Interstellar is currently 77.

This looks like a very polarizing movie, I wasn't expecting universal acclaim, I'm not sure I wanted it either. Nolan is at his best when his movies aren't easily digestible.

Yeah if you dont like a movie but rate it 3 out of 5, you're doing it wrong.

Agreed.

But what if you are the type to give out 4/5's and 5/5's like Halloween candy? The more generous you are, the more likely you might think a 3/5 is actually bad.

I get where you're coming from but then I 'd be questioning the credibility of these critics who think 3/5 is bad. Maybe they should change the rating system to out of 10.
