Interstellar - Part 7

Stephanie Zacharek's negative review was predictable. Funnily enough she complains that Nolan spends too much time showing rather than telling (the opposite of usual criticisms). That said, she does criticize the dialogue. She also insinuates that Nolan "wastes" actors (Lithgow in this). I've never seen that critique of Nolan before. That he's bad with actors. She wasn't impressed with McConaughey's performance either.

BTW, don't read her review. There's spoilers, as per usual with most critics nowadays. They can't review anything without laying out a plot outline.

Percentage drops by 3 or 4 points... Average score goes up nearly half a point. Good 'ol RT. Lol!
I don't even know why I look.

Don't pay attention man. It will wind you up if its' not what you're hoping for.

Agreed. If youre a Nolan fan and plan to see this film come hell or high water then that RT Meter really shouldnt be any concern. Dont let it get to ya, Hypsters.

Can't wait for the movie and the RT meter does nout to change that. Everyone I tend to agree with so far has loved it and that's really all that's important.

Are reviews now a days like wikipedia articles? seriously is like reading the freaking summary of the movie, cant they just i dont know, be good journalist and say if the movie is good or not? why do critics now a days feel like they have to write 30 paragraphs? Im pretty sure people from the hype can write much better reviews than most of this so called Journalists.

This is not a pro or anti Nolan thing, I just think that this reviewers spoil almost all of the movie before people even see it

And that is why I refuse to read reviews in full.

Stephanie's complaint about Lithgow is really irritating. Maybe he just really wanted to work with Nolan. Presumably he read the script before he signed on... right?

It's bizarre isn't it? I don't know anything about the inner workings of journalism or film criticism, but maybe they get paid by the... word? Or they have a quota that they have to meet.

Reviews can be encompassing and cover the various aspects of the film. Script, pace, score, plotting etc. Most professional critics and many online reviewers like to at least make mention of those aspects. A professional critic like Ebert could write an entire page talking about all those things and never once spoil a plot point. There are other reviewers who are also careful about spoilers too. You just gotta know which critics to read and which ones to avoid like the plague.

Something that sounded familiar when I looked over this interview

It wants to awe us into submission, to concede our insignificance in the face of such grand-scale art. It achieves that with ease. Yet on his way to making an epic, Nolan forgot to let us have fun.

This sentiment echos what people thought about his Batman movies

why do people keep saying things like this? Is his humor too high brow?

Nolan's movies aren't nearly as humorless as people make them out to be.

He's a serious guy, yea, but people really exaggerate.

And stuff like "I gotta get me one of those!" isn't exactly "high brow".

Yeah, though BB had a lot more humor than the subsequent films did.

The Joker has a lot of good dark humor. Same for Bane. The magic trick, Bane sending his man after the other, the "control" scene, "you remind me of my father", tryouts, etc.

I also think Bruce, Lucius and Alfred all have very good senses of humor.

Only scene I ever found Joker funny in was the mafia scene. Heath's Joker is amazing, but he doesn't make me laugh like say, Hamill's Joker. Heath's Joker is just more scary and mysterious.

Joker in the red wig and him saying "Hiiiii" had the audience rolling at every screening of TDK I went to. The pencil trick got a big laugh/gasp too. And when he was playing with the detonator outside the hospital. And his "I like this job. I like it." got a laugh.

Yeah Joker had a ton of great dark humor scenes and moments. TDK had plenty of lighter moments among the dark stuff, and not just with Joker. The Bruce Wayne playboy stuff was always good, as was the Bruce and Alfred banter ("Accomplice? I'm going to tell them the whole thing was your idea"), Lau being left half conscious by Batman with a 'Please deliver to Lt. Gordon' message stuck on him outside Police HQ, Lucius Fox's handling of Reese's blackmail attempt, the Batman suspects list on the Police bulletin board that was made up of the likes of Abe Lincoln, Elvis, and Big Foot etc.

People who think Nolan's movies, particularly his Batman movies, are devoid of humor must have been watching the movies with their fingers in their ears and their eyes closed.

There's a lot of subtle funny moments in Ledger's performance. I mean, the way he looks at the pool cue after snapping it is darkly hilarious.

I think Ledger is morbidly hilarious the whole time. Just some of his expressions and mannerisms (like the hilarious "not sure if serious" head tilt he does to Patrick Leahy that spawned a million gif posts, and the way he jumps at his own explosion).

Those little "Jokerisms" that Heath added, like the way he looks at the pool cue and the way he fiddled with the detonator, and all the other little twitches and expressions are what made that performance. It really brought the character to life. These subtle character quirks and expressions make me laugh more than the on the nose humor that Burton and Nicholson brought to the character.

Edit: Schloss beat me to it.

Tho I prefer Heath's Joker, Nicholson delivered one of my favorite lines in cinema "Have you ever danced with the devil...?" Its nothing earth shattering, but Ive loved it since I first heard it.

While we're on the subject of humour in Nolan's films, Eames and Arthur's relationship in Inception is very funny.

Goddamn.

Can you guys imagine some bloggers and critics of today reviewing 2001 back in that day? I'm not comparing this 2001, but a lot of these critcs need to be spoon fed.

Some even attacked Scorsese for making a film like Wolf.

I hope you are having fun in heaven, Roger.

I miss ya.

2001's script would likely get eviscerated by today's audiences and critics. Hell, I dont think a major studio of today would even take on a script like 2001.

That's one aspect, I think the other one is in the light of most people's comedic exposure coming from canned laughter sitcoms and Judy Apatow comedies people expect the humour to be a blatant sledgehammer and anything lower on the scale is classed as 'too serious'.

There's actually quite a lot of humour in TDKT if people's definitions are broader than sexual innuendo and lowbrow one liners.
