Interstellar - Part 8

Oh I got the point. But people like that are in fact party poopers

Yeah, I think you're talking about JMC not me. I don't even have an issue with JMC's philosophy either; just a different opinion. Otherwise, you look very silly right now.

It makes sense to me during a concert or a live theatre production, but a movie where the creative team can't hear you? Pointless to me.
Only pointless if you view applause as something done solely for a performer's benefit. If you look at it as a group of people's way of expressing satisfaction for their own benefit, it makes sense.

I saw this Wednesday night and my initial reaction was that it was a horrible experience but that was because of where I saw it at the Tech IMAX in San Jose which is more like a planetarium apparently than a true film screen. Cramped in there like sardines with no room to move or stretch for nearly 3 hrs and all the time having to look straight up to see the movie(no matter where you were sitting) and at no time could you see the entire picture but instead had to keep turning your head to see the edges of the 'screen'. Ugh!!! As soon as I got out of there my reaction was 'F*** THAT MOVIE!!!!' but after calming down I realize that was due to elements extraneous to the film itself. I thought the movie itself was decent overall. Not sure what score I'd give it yet. I really should see it properly on a regular actual film screen. This immersive IMAX stuff is for the birds IMO. So if you're in San Jose and are contemplating seeing this at the Tech museum, I'd advise against it.

I saw it at a regular old theater with a decently large screen, and I was still very immersed. The sound was amazing and shook the theater. And the screen was plenty large.
I don't think its an absolute necessity to see it in IMAX. So don't let that stop you guys from seeing it.

Well if you're going to see it in IMAX, do it on a real IMAX screen. Having it basically projected on a wall is crap by comparison.

This film is a LOT to take in on one viewing. I think it's really weighed down by its own jargon, verbage, and exposition. Despite everything being explained for the audience, it's still not that easy to completely catch on to all of it and to fully grasp the "rules" of that world. You have to be a truly active participant in this film experience, in that if you tune out even for a minute, you might never be able to catch up.

That's exactly how I felt and feel it's a problem with all of Nolan's films. It's not that his characters are cold...it's that they move the plot along by talking too damn much, instead of doing.

Nolan's never made a bad movie and I liked this one. Amazing high concept, visuals, and performances. But the characters prattle on the exposition like they're reading the "how to" manual of installing a refrigerator.

To be fair, though, some of the ideas in this and in Inception are really tough to get across to an audience without explaining them -- especially in Interstellar. Unless you're an expert on these interstellar travel, time relativity, and worm holes, you'll need things explained so you can enjoy what the film is trying to do.

So while it is a criticism I have of this film (too much jargon, hard to follow certain conversations), I don't have an answer to what Nolan could have done differently...other than utilizing power-point presentations...

I liked how they explained why a wormhole actually looked like a Sphere.

I think Nolan's dialog jargon was at it's most natural was with Memento. It's his most quiet film comparatively speaking. I also think The Dark Knight it seemed more natural, with the monologues, etc.

I'm sure Big Hero 6 is great. Disney has definitely been on a roll lately. I'm seeing it Monday.

True, but in fairness, Memento doesn't have much of a complicated plot and is linear in structure. The only thing out of the ordinary was the main character's condition, which he himself explains several times, and the backwards-structure is revealed as each scene goes by.

TDK also required much less exposition than BB since Batman and his mission were already established, and the Joker was purposely left as a mysterious character.

about to catch it in an hr on IMAX really looking forward to this, the mixed reviews have helped me lower my expectations.

Who thinks Cooper vs you know who was a better fight scene than Bane vs Batman? At least no rolling punches that miss by five inches.

^Well I gotta agree with Doug Walker that having the old 1960's Star Trek fight music playing over that would have been priceless. :hehe:

BTW, his bum review of this film is one of his more entertaining reviews in a while.

Even in BB, when they're talking about the microwave emitter or in TDK, when they're talking about RICO laws. It's Nolan's only weakness, I think. Clunky dialogue. Granted, every movie needs dialogue...but it's so overhanded.

I can imagine a "Jurassic Park" directed by Chris Nolan. Great visuals, but instead of running in terror, the characters stand around and strategize about the ways they can escape the island.
