i'm sick and tired having to remind everyone all the time who is in charge of marvel tv. Ike won't give one extra dollar. stop asking for bigger budgets.

I mean isn't Netflix paying for the show? Couldn't they ask for more?

The way TV works is the network decides how much to pay to produce a show and the show decides whether to do it for that pay or not. So the budget is determined by Netflix unless Marvel were to spend more on their own for some reason.

Yeah, people may not like Ike Perlmutter, but it sounds like these budgets aren't his fault...not 100% at least.

Netflix and Marvel have so much $$$ so it's a shame that they skimp on it. Especially when it's filmed in NYC and that eats so much of the budget.

I mean I like filming in NYC and all. It does offer the shows a nice level of authenticity. But let's hypothetically say they filmed in Toronto, do you really think that would enable them to add crazier characters and more visual effects? Just asking hypothetically.

I mean a big part of Luke Cage is the Harlem setting. Do we really want to lose that?

Yeah, I'd prefer the New York setting (for the shows that need it, Punisher can be anywhere, really). However, I would prefer more money and I suspect Marvel TV's frugal nature probably influenced their pitch.

That being said, I don't think the show would go for CGI or anything like that anyway. It's much more an aesthetic choice. It's an aesthetic that doesn't quite fit Iron Fist, but fits the others quite well.

These shows do not need much CGI. In fact the amount of cgi right now is perfect for these shows. I think any budget problems is only for the filming schedule and maybe more elaborate sets. Taking Iron Fist for example it would be nice if they could add more days for production, allow writers more time to fine tune scripts but more importantly the directors and fight choreographers to plan the fight scenes. If it was filmed in Toronto you can bet there would be more scenes featuring Kun Lun. You gotta take into account designing, constructing, creating wardrobes, etc. or finding suitable locations in a reasonable distance that can double for Kun Lun and hiring extras. IF season 1 did some very bare bones with it, one very generic room, a cave entrance, the path entrance to Kun Lun, and 2-3 robes.

But really all the other series does a great job with their budgets, Daredevil still has a ton of great fight scenes. Truth is it really comes down to show runners so much budget problems can be handled with a show runner who knows what to prioritize and how to get around their limitations. I think they could have easily have 2-3 somewhat more elaborate scenes with their existing budget. Just something to cement Kun Lun as a living breathing place. Hopefully season 2 can manage to do more of that.

I agree the setting of New York is more than worth it and most of the shows wouldn't gain much in return for filming someplace cheaper. It really gives these shows an identity and level of authenticity than other shows that just use a generic enough street corners of LA or where ever. Iron Fist is the only one that would really benefit allowing for more exploration of Kun Lun. While I think Punisher's narrative should expand away from New York, these shows are a bit too ingrained with New York based production companies for that to really happen.

Yeah, pretty much all a show about a martial arts-centric character should concern itself with is executing great fight scenes, not particularly worry about the CG (I mean, they have to do the fist FX for sure, but that's about it). Thinking about Kun-Lun takes me back to the old Mortal Kombat: Conquest tv show - they built sets for the city of Zhu Zin, and I visualise them and wonder how much they took to build (what, in 1999?). If they could do that then, why not now for Kun Lun? Surely the budget for Iron Fist is bigger than what the budget for MK:C was?

At first I was disappointed that IF S2 is coming out before DD S3 but do to the events of The Defenders it makes sense that IF is first.

The lack of any sets or really any of K'un L'un was a major letdown. Along with no Shao Lao.

Yep. Couldnt Netflix have even just raided Marco Polo and used sets and shots from there and inserted them in Iron Fist? I kid, obviously but at least there would have been more than a cave. Certainly more of a 'mystical orient vibe' anyway

Probably the dumbest in hindsight comment I made was that Marvel having Scott Buck do Inhumans right after Iron Fist (keep in mind both hadn't come out yet) showed that Marvel trusted him to do the more fantastical television stuff.

I was in agreement with their frugality toward the series. While Marco Polo got a hugeeeeee budget and it flopped.
