Comics Is anyone else just not a big fan of ASM right now?

So he should have sucked it up and spent hundred and hundreds of dollars on a status quo he doesn't like to make sure he understands the story or he should have no opinion? That's what I call the "Marvel Mentality."

Honestly, if he stopped at OMD then what he said is precisely how it was portrayed. We ALL thought Mephisto changed all that until it was retconned to be only the marriage. Marvel honestly handled that whole situation horribly. They gave us something as rediculous as OMD and the BND team didn't even bother to explain it until, what, two years later or something like that? A hundred issues? Honestly, people can complain about this all day and I don't fault them for it one bit. Marvel deserves every inch of flack that they get for how they treated one of their top tier books and the fans of it.

Slow down pissy pants... nobody suggested that he had to read/pay for all the books, but if you take TEN MINUTES and do a little bit of internet research, it's all there.

But nope... it's just easier to ***** and complain and just be MAD and make all kinds of rants that nobody else is interested in reading.

Marvel's not getting any flak for this... I am... and I certainly do not deserve it.

Thanks for listening.

How is anyone giving you flack?! You don't have to participate in this conversation. The ire is directed at Marvel. You've chosen to defend them. You, on the other hand, are insulting other posters. "Pissy pants" because he disagrees with you about a comic? Okay, that's very mature. :whatever:

ppl love to complain, ******, moan, and whine about anything and everything they can
I dunno, it's actually been a pretty nice discussion so far. Even if I don't even agree with a lot of what's been said.

Haha... you're a funny guy...

I called him pissy pants because of a couple of reasons... 1) we're pretty good guys to one another, and the split with OMD has caused natural "disagreements" towards one another, though we've always kept it clean ... but more importantly, 2) he defended the rants of a poster who moaned and complained about the book with using FALSE facts... I could care less if someone doesn't like the book, but don't make false claims... yet JH says he's within his rights to do so... I disagree.

Have a great day....

Not true. I enjoy reading as many rants about OMD as I can.

It's Marvel's policy to ignore fans who disagree with OMD so our flak bounces off their smelly backsides and falls to you, therefore, you should really blame Marvel for slinging flak at at you. They did create the Anti/Pro-OMD factions afterall. You only have them to thank. Hate them.

Join us!

Yeah, it's come to the point where I don't think either of us will ever take the other seriously regarding Spider-Man's current status quo. Never a harmed feeling.

And for your information, I'm wearing my pissy shorts today.

I haven't read it. The last issue I tried out was #679. I had the urge to try out EOTE a few times now, but with them being $4 and biweekly, so far I've just opted to pick up some back issues of Sweet Tooth and The Sixth Gun instead.

Slott's run has probably been one of the better Spider-Man runs in many, many years but opting for Sweet Tooth and Sixth Gun is a good decision. Those books are top of the stack reads for me.

I think I've pinpointed why I dislike Slott's Peter Parker so much. He makes him sound like a Saturday morning cartoon incarnation. This reads like the opening monologue of something aimed at 8 year olds.

Yeah, that sounds about like every other "grown up" cry baby that thinks "their" comics should be more "mature" and how is was ok back in the day when they were kids... lulz

Crawlspace is fine, but it's loaded with way too many jaded old guys that should find a new hobby because they'll never find what they're looking for in Spider-Man...

I'm not a huge crawl space fan. I think the mods act childish and petty with their personal attacks on Slott, Wacker and Joe Q. I would never do that. I will criticize bad writing and poor characterization though. I go to that site to read the occasional review or solicit, which is how I found that picture. Now did you actually want to respond to my point or continue being pissy and insulting people you disagree with. You calling anyone a "cry baby" is a major case of pot calling the kettle black, Mr Why-is-everyone-giving-me-flack?

Yeah, I love Silver Sable and we all wondered what trick Spidey had up his sleeve to combat Sandman. We got our answer and it was pretty neat.

Y'know for all my flaws, the one attribute I hope to always maintain is the ability to admit when I'm wrong, and I kinda feel compelled to do that here.

Since EOTE, and through the Lizard arc, Dan has done an incredible job writing very large scale, exciting, and extremely entertaining issues that have honestly been some of the best Spidey I've read in the past 8 years or so. I think I'll probably revisit Spider-Island now too.

I hear you. When I clicked on this thread right at the top of the page was my comment from back in April when I thought Slott's run was far from perfect and I thought at the time Micheline's was better.

I've been praising this book pretty heavily lately, considering on par to the classic runs of Wolfman, Stern and DeFalco so that indicates how good a summer this book has had.

I think it's for a few very solid reasons:

1. Dan's gone from mostly telling quick 1-2 issue "fun" stories, to telling more epic and definitive Spider-Man stories - that really resonate for Peter.

2. Instead of heavily exploring Peter's life, he's started to instead focus on Spider-Man's interaction with his villains, and really strongly characterizing and progressing those villains.

3. The two Cs are much better on art than Ramos.

Too bad Caselli is leaving to do Avengers Assemble. I'd rather see him on the real Avengers title than that book. I don't know who's replacing him.

So honest question... Does anyone actually LIKE Alpha and think he's interesting? It seems most people either hate him or merely tolerate him. I haven't seen a single soul actually profess any love or even like for this walking plot-device. No one is awaiting the newest issue in anticipation to find out what's new in the life of "Poochie"... uh, Alpha.

This is one of those characters that even if Slott doesn't kill him in order to manufacture a cheap, precooked emotional moment, he will still disappear into obscurity once Slott has moved on. There's nothing organic about him. It's all plot-driven with him. And once that plot concludes, he will have outlived his purpose.

It depresses me to read Spidey these days. I don't recognize the book at all. It's become some manga-looking, faux hipster garbage. And I'm sure TMOB or someone else will attack me for that, but I'm just being honest in my feelings. I think the book's really nosedived since Slott and Ramos pretty much took sole control and they got rid of the revolving cast of creators. Whenever one creator hogs a book too long (see Mackie, Howard) there's a decline and this one is pretty terrible. This book needs fresh blood worse than Morbius.

Generally speaking, it's very rare for people to like ANY new character after only 1 or 2 issues.

No one gave a **** about Batwoman, Blue Beetle, Batwing, Miles Morales, etc. after just one issue. It took several arcs for their character to be fully fleshed out and developed to the point where they're really a legit character.

Alpha's currently in that same situation.

I haven't read # 692 or 693 yet so I have no opinion on the "Alpha" character. However, I can see what you mean about how the book is different than it's been in the past. I'm kind of in the middle right now. Slott's run started out great but I'd say the last 6 to 8 months he's kind of been hit and miss with me. There are story arcs that I'll be like, "Ok, now this is what I'm talking about" Then, like Ends of the Earth, I'm left going, "What the heck was he thinking with this?" Sometimes he writes solid dialogue and then he'll write some of the most cheesy dialogue. My biggest example was the way he had been writing Mysterio through the Sinister Six arc and The Ends of the Earth arc. A lot of that characters dialogue was cringe worthy.

With that being said I just think there comes a time with a long time character where it's just never going to be your cup of tea ever again. What may have been "your Spider-Man" will never be again and now it's going to be someone elses Spider-Man.

It's the same discussion I've had with some people at the comic shop recently about the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon. The cartoon is NOT designed for the mature viewer...it's not for adults. The cartoon is designed for little children 5 to 10 years old depending on their maturity levels.

Sometimes you will eventually outgrow certain things despite how hard you don't want that. Times change. I truly believe I'm starting to get to that point with the current Amazing Spider-Man comic. I'll stick with it for a little bit but if I keep getting hit and miss I will have to do what I have to do. I've found myself getting into much different genres in comics and have been backing a lot of Kickstarter campaigns for indie creators. It's nothing against Dan Slott or Ramos but they are doing something that's probably not going to be aimed toward a 30 year old man. Marvel has a 50 year old character to try and keep fresh and keep publishing to a new generation of Spider-Man fan and sometimes in the process you are going to leave the older generation behind. I don't think that's a good idea...you want to make EVERYONE happy but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Wha... wha... what?

Why me?

:csad:

I'm looking forward to the next issues NOT because of "Alpha"... I could give two ***** about him as a character... but the story itself has been fun and nice... if you really examine the little bits and pieces here and there, you get such wonderful nods to Spidey's 50 years... and to top it all off, we get an awesome homage to the 1976 Superman vs Spider-Man cover for Part 3... one of my favourite stories as a then young 8 or 9 year old Spidey fan...

In my opinion, this 3 parter is just a fun homage to the anniversary, and then the crap will hit the fan with the HobGoblin storyline and then the ascent to ASM #700...

I hope Slott stays on the book for as long as he wants... because I don't see ANYONE at Marvel right NOW that could write the character with such passion and care...

Having said that... if you're not digging it... well, I wish you would... but you are being honest and "different strokes for different folks"...

Though I think we both agree that Alpha is Marvel's answer to Poochie... :woot:

Inasmuch as I hate to state this aloud... but after reading the Spider-Men mini-series... this Miles kid has caught my attention...

I might buy the trades... :wow: :wow: :wow:

Yeah, Miles is cool.

Personally - as sacrilegious as it is for me to say here - I really don't like Peter Parker all that much. He's often portrayed as a dopey and whiner loser, who pretty much squanders his genius and intellect (until Slott, of course). I've always been more into the supercool, out of this world powerful and confident people like Batman, Cap, Cyclops, etc.

But Miles is cool - he suffers from just as much angst as Peter (if not more), but emotes in a very understated and mature way. He's kind of a nice mixture of the teenage troubles of Peter Parker, with the darker quiet repression of Batman or someone along those lines.

It's also awesome he's actually a black character that doesn't have "black" in his name. :o

I'm don't find him all that interesting so far but like CConn said, it takes more than 2 issues. After this past issue, I am def looking forward to 694 to see how this all concludes and where Alpha stands come 700.

I'm also really looking forward to the next Hobgoblin War arc. Then comes Dying Wish and s**t's about to get real.
