It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's the Superman Costume Thread! - Part 1

This is exactly why I'm unsure. There has been no confirmation anywhere that the changes to Superman are due to the lawsuit. For all we know it's another attempt to make him "relatable" by decreasing his power level and having him rely on armor like human characters such as Batman and Iron Man.

It's probably both. If thats indeed the direction they've taken then that is mind bogglingly stupid.

Edit: check out the wiki on new 52. Apparently the relaunch was not without controversey behind the scenes.

A slightly modified costume would not protect Warner Brothers from being sued for Copyright infringement.

For perspective, Fawcett Comics lost to DC Comics over Captain Marvel, despite being entirely different other than a superstrong Caucasian with black hair in a cape.

I just miss Superman:

This honestly makes me want to cry. One day, guys...one day he'll be back for real.

The article said:
This changes in the Superman costume are in themselves not likely to provide a solid foundation for erasing the Siegel heirs’ ownership interest. However, the costume changes and other shifts in continuity are consistent with DC’s arguments for limiting what the Siegels now own.

It's the story additions, made by WB that could potentially win them a lawsuit if a copyright infringement case were to take place.

Would be awesome to see the more talented fans just put together their own not-for-profit web comic, just to keep the real Superman alive, because it's plain to see we won't be seeing DC published classic Superman for a while.

Superman in the New 52 has been acting more like Superman had been for the previous decade and a half at least. Only difference is he looks a little different. So for that, I am happy. The costume could have been redesigned better, but it doesn't bother me that much.

I know how you feel my friend, but as long as Dan DiDio is in charge of DC the classic Superman costume is gone.:csad:

It's almost ironic that Superman, the comicbook symbol of hope, is now the character in most need of some. Granted, I love Morrison's Action Comics, and the other books aren't so bad either, but some of the changes are just so pointless.

This. I love the ´´classic`` Superman as much as anyone but some of these comments seem a bit extreme. Superman isn't ´´gone`` just because he looks slightly different. I guess I just don't get what the big deal is. Sure the Jim Lee trunkless design is MEH due to the stupid armor look and the high collar (imo anyway) but it's still Superman. I'll take this look and the way he is written now (especially in Action Comics) over the classic costumed Superman that isn't written like one any day of the week.

And hey in 2038 he becomes public property anyway, right? At least everything from AC #1 will.

It's a big deal because for those who have an emotional investment in the character, especially going back to childhood, the classic vision of Superman has been an indelible image for years. Didn't you ever as a kid dress up as Superman for Halloween and try to get it exactly right as well as notice when something was off with other kid's superman costumes? It's really as simple as that. Being as I am now an adult (more or less) sure I can accept change if it serves a cool purpose and enriches the character. But the bottom line is that if something means something to you, you like it just they way it is and get annoyed when it's ****ed with.

Wow, I did not know that. Public Domain FTW!

Shhh, you're using logic and reason. More histrionics and indignation, please and thank you.

Those two things are what hype is all about to be honest. And I'm not going to pretend that I haven't engaged in the stupidity over the years.

The preview of the next issue of Superman may have cleared things up for me, though. Superman was in a machine (think All-Star Superman) that tested his strength levels and he was said to have been bench pressing the equivalent weight of the Earth for a week. If he's that strong, he most likely doesn't need armor except for the most powerful threats (like Doomsday or Darkseid).

Dude, just for the record his post had zero logic and reason and was entirely pure subjective opinion. He doesn't get what the big deal is, he doesn't have a problem with the Lee suit. That's an opinion, not logic. And we're both entitled to our opinions. But I at least was reasoning through why I personally don't like the armor suit. But you were right, my post definitely could have been read as histrionic and indignant. You want to go ahead and smugly agree with him then fine, you're hilarious.

I'm gonna have to pick it up. Now I'm curious

And btw, watched the comic con footage with a friend the other day. There's no doubt in my mind the suit's gonna look f-in awesome. Seems they're going for really iconic looking shots to feature the suit. Refreshing since there were practically none in Dark Knight Rises.

People need to remember, being super strong, doesn't necessarily mean they can't get hurt. I can bench heavier than average weights, i can still die from an infected paper cut, a slit throat poison.

I expect that in the new 52, he is strong, but not invinsible - a bomb would hurt, a body slam by a train off guard would hurt. But, like once stated, if he is truly that song, bench pressing the world, surely the world to him would be lke walking through a city made of tissue..

Ahh.. Impervious but still feeling pain. Like getting hit by a car with no scars, but still feeling the force of the blow, interesting physics.

Good point, one that's always made me curious. Even if Supes wasn't strong enough to bench the earth, it's still as if he's walking through a world made of tissue. I'd be curious to read stories that expand on that kind of angle; what exactly it must be like to be Superman and how he has to constantly be on his guard when in disguise, like walking constantly on ice.

Reminds me of that scene in SR when he breaks the picture of Lois and Cyclops(James Marsden, aka Richard in the film). I think a cool factor of Superman would be his increased mass or weight on Earth. He should break chairs and destroy computers with typing.

He said that Superman is not in fact "gone" just because his suit has been altered. That's just objectively true.

I don't really like the sound of that. I mean, how are the Kents gonna raise baby Clark if they can't even lift him? Plus, the idea that he's living such a torturous existence is more depressing than anything and isn't the kinda problems I want him to have to deal with.

I don't think they should go with the concept that Kryptonians are more dense and heavier because there's just too many inconveniences as a result. Just say it's got something to do with an advanced molecular structure and there's no "world of cardboard" problems then.

Matter of semantics, and it wasn't the crux of his post. The categorically classic Superman design is in fact gone. I never meant to argue that Superman was replaced with something entirely different just because of a suit change. When I specified as such "the real Superman" in a previous post I meant it as a matter of hyperbole.

Agreed about having it be a constant plot device to evoke sympathy. Though there have been story lines I remember where normal human characters are standing around talking about what it must be like for Superman and how he has to constantly be on his guard all the time so as not to take a wrong step and put a hole through the sidewalk. you know what, then again maybe stuff like this is just better suited for comic dork conversations on a message board :)
