James Bond In Skyfall - Part 6

Have you ever seen a Bond movie made before Casino Royale? Bond films used to be BIG, exciting, full of fantasy and adventure. Skyfall comes across as a Christopher Nolan wannabe. They went from Bourne wannabe to Nolan wannabe.

Oh, you mean films like Diamonds are Forever, Die Another Day, Moonraker and their lot? Yeah, I'm glad they're staying away.

I can't see the trailer at work, but from the gifs I'm seeing there's nothing Nolan about them.

I think the trailer was meant to be Nolanesque. Just something to get people talking but not really do anything.

It was alright. I need to see more though. They probably went overboard with the silhoutettes.

Yea i've seen all the Bond films. And none of them have the same tone of Avengers.

What, you want to see Bond fighting off alien invasions and city wide destruction?

Bond should be a spy thriller. This series' tone was set with Casino Royale, which i consider one of the best Bond films, top 5 easily. So because they are sticking with that tone, which makes sense since it's the same continuity, you think it's trying to rip off Nolan?

Listen, Sam ****ing Mendes has no need to copy Nolan.

Should have done just a logo only teaser then. Not a half assed teaser

As much as the TDK teaser had done the trick back in '07, I hate this kind of teasers. If footage comes with it, then even better. Gorgeous images only help a film's case. Add to that the (no-brainer, really) logo and you've got a hit. I don't see the problem here.

No. I mean like THUNDERBALL, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME, and GOLDENEYE.

And, I assume you also mean From Russia With Love and Dr. No and Goldeneye. Aside from The Spy Who Loved Me, those films were fun and exciting, but not ridiculous.

Nothing stops Skyfall from being like them just because they have a couple more night shots than you're used to.

Eh, if by that you mean that they've at some point been far campier, cheesier and more light-hearted than the Avengers, then yeah. None of them have the same tone as TA.

Exactly. It's gonna look great, and be a great Bond adventure. The full trailer is more likely to be more of the classic Bond adventure.

It really grinds my gears when people imply that light-hearted=fun.

What does that have to do with TONE? The Avengers was light-hearted and FUN. Just like Bond films used to be.

And...? Key is "used to be". Are you suggesting Casino Royale isn't an excellent Bond movie? This is a new era of Bond film, i would have thought people would be used to it by now. I mean it's been like this since 2006. Were you honestly expecting it to be any different?

By the way, did I mention that Daniel Craig said that Skyfall is going to have more of the classic Bond humor in it? I don't think I have. :o

Dammit, I'm very angry that I won't be seeing the trailer for 4 hours.

None of us have seen the movie. So, obviously we don't know what Skyfall will ultimately be. But the marketing selling a dark and brooding film is not the way to go. It's Bond's 50th anniversary. Let's celebrate that. Let's have a little fun. I'm NOT saying to go the extremes of Die Another Day. But something a little more - GoldenEye - would be nice.

No, we haven't seen the movie, but it's been stated by EON more than thrice that this is a return to a more classic Bond formula, including the humor and characters like Q. More evidence points to Skyfall being the kind of fun you'd expect (always being consistent with the tone set by CR and QoS, obviously) than not.

Casino Royale was fun anyway. It had a great, dry sense of humour. Like in the prologue when Bond is like "But i know where you keep your gun". And at the hotel when those guys think he is a valet and he crashes their car then nonchalantly tosses their keys away.

It wasn't overt but there was definitely a sense of humour there.

Okay, let's assume that you're right and the movie is, in your opinion, dark. Let's look at the B.O. for both movies.

Casino Royale:
Domestic: $167,445,960 28.2%
+ Foreign: $426,793,106 71.8%
= Worldwide: $594,239,066

Quantum of Solace:
Domestic: $168,368,427 28.7%
+ Foreign: $417,722,300 71.3%
= Worldwide: $586,090,727

Explain to me how it would not be the way to go? The new era of Bond has been working so far . I refuse to call it the dark era because they weren't fully dark. They just had less humor in it. The tone was

But like I said before, they're trying to match the classic Bond feel, more akin to Goldeneye and the Spy Who Loved Me while also meshing From Russia With Love in.

I always think the Spy Who Loved Me, while enjoyable, is the odd movie out of all the classic Bonds.

Just saw the trailer but without sound (I'm at work). Deakins .

The Spy Who Loved Me is a Bond movie that really sticks to the Bond formula, whereas the other great Bond movies (other than Goldfinger for obvious reasons) don't stick to it as much. Unlike a lot of the other Bond movies that stick to the formula, the humor isn't as forced, the Bond girl isn't as stupid, and the action really sticks out.

Plus, I think The Spy Who Loved Me is, outside of only You Only Live Twice, is the best looking Bond movie cinematography wise, though this movie looks like it's gonna take that title.

Yeah, it's just that TSWLM feels more like a continuation of the YOLT style than the FRWL, GF or the TB one.

Okay, Parker. Where in this teaser trailer do you see any of that? All I see is "James Bond Meets Christopher Nolan." Will the actual film be like that? Maybe. Maybe not. We don't know yet. But that's the way Sony/MGM is selling it. And that's my biggest criticism. They're approaching the marketing the wrong way. This is Bond's 50th anniversary. Let's celebrate that with a trailer that's a little more... fun.

I don't get it. The lines uttered in the trailer contained humor. There was action/explosions/stunts. There was classy Bond. What exactly isn't fun?

And i fail to see the Chris Nolan influence. Oh wait, there is a scene in an interrogation room with characters looking through the magic mirror! Rip off!
