James Bond In Skyfall - Part 6

I never even said that. Casino Royale is a GREAT movie but I also wouldn't it call it dark and brooding. It's serious. It's grounded. But dark and brooding? Not really. And... more importantly, it was never sold as dark and brooding. Shall we take a look?

It starts out with the black & white prologue, but as soon as the James Bond Theme kicks in, it gets FUN and exciting. The Skyfall teaser has none of that. It's dark and brooding throughout the whole duration. Oh... and notice how they even broke the 4th wall with Daniel Craig staring at the camera. So, maybe they could pull that off after all.

Again... we are all fans here. We don't need a fancy trailer to get our butts in the seat. But the main public, they need something exciting. And the Skyfall trailer is anything but that. MGM/Sony need to re-think their marketing.

Skyfall looks Serious and grounded in reality, but dark and brooding? Not really....

It's always has to be one or the other with some people. If it's not light hearted, it's dark. If a light hearted movie is successful, then a darker toned and themed movies cannot be. If it's grounded, it cannot be fun.

Did people shy away from Batman being dark

Batman is dark and psychological. That's what people expect from the character. James Bond is a guy in a tuxedo who saves the world and has sex with lots of women. Dark and brooding is not something most people would associate with James Bond. There has been serious and grounded films. There has been campy and over-the-top movies. But, dark and brooding is not James Bond. And especially not in his 50th anniversary. Worst of all, the film is most likely not even dark and brooding. So, I don't know why Sony/MGM is marketing it that way if it isn't even an accurate descripton of the movie.

It's so cool to dislike serious and grounded these days. It doesn't automatically mean it can't be fun too, infact I find fun parts even more effective in a serious context. Casino Royale is great fun imo (TDK too for that matter for the Nolan comparisons)!

Then I guess you haven't heard of the pandemonium that preceded B89, when Burton was hired and proposed a darker take. Because up till then people had the Adam West Batman in mind. Miller had done TDKReturns which changed his perception to fanboys, but the wider audiences thought he was a light-hearted hero. The backlash was immense. The result... is history.

Same with Bond. And, yet again, where is this dark and brooding stuff you see, because I see sexual puns and action and stunts in the teaser gifs.

The music. The Nolan-esque shots of Bond looking over London. The interogation room. Bond's castle on fire with some dark figure walking towards the camera.

..........I wish you had posted this 2 pages ago. It shows that you have no idea what brooding means.

It's clear to me now that it's posts like this that have created the Nolan backlash the last 3 years.

The main character looking across a city is Nolan-esque?

If anything it's a beautiful shot, it isn't dark at all. And it's more of a mooder than a brooder for sure.

No he's right. Nolan was the first director to have shots like that, with someone looking over a city scape. And interrogation rooms, a total Nolan trademark.

And no, Pfister and Nolan rarely use those types of silhouette shots. Not that striking anyway. That's a purely Deakins thing.

Seriously, can't get over how stunning and cool this movie looks. I'm drawn right in, just from a few seconds short shots.

Seems like OHMMS will be challenged as the most visually interesting and pleasing Bond-movie.

In the movie? Probably. In the trailer? Not at all. Let's observe the context of the trailer. Bond is being questioned by his superiors. There's caskets with Union flags on them. Bond is looking over London. Dramatic music is being played throughout. At the beginning of this discussion I said that we, the fans, know what's going on. The general public doesn't. So, when they see that they intepret it as Bond brooding.

Yeah, and one of the answers to the questions alludes to a sexual innuendo. Clearly dark and brooding.

No, you have it backwards. There was a backlash against Burton when he cast Micheal Keaton, who was known for being a comedian, and the backlash was because Batman fans thought it was not going to be a dark and serious movie, because of that casting.
