James Bond In Skyfall - Part 7

I'm thinking of getting that. As much as I don't want some of those Bond films. I'd love to just sit down one day and watch all of them through, sicne I haven't seen all of them (like 5 or 6)
Ah that takes me back :dreamsaway: Me and my sister used to do that on summer holidays when we were kids in the early 90s. Our stepfather is a huge Bondfan and he had all the then released films on VHS in the big boxes. We just took full days and just sat infront of the television like zombies and watched no matter how sunny it was outside :word:

Bond didn't question him because that's not his job. James' work does involve some spying, but the point of the 00-agents is to act on information. Bond is the other side of the George Smiley coin. Yes he does investigate and add more information to what MI6 does know about his target, but he is usually given his target and sent out to be the blunt instrument.

Sounds like my kind of summer.

To be honest my personal viewings of bond films doesn't extend any further back than the brosnan era. But in doing a bit of my own research it seems that pretty much every other bond film wasn't that good.

It seems for every bond film era there was one or two bad or not well received films to come out. Just from my era you had the world is not enough, die another day and QOS is probably more middling than bad i suppose.

You need to see the first four Connery films.

Exactly. My favorite Bond movie remains to be From Russia With Love, and this is a movie that didn't even have Q (who was introduced in the following movie Goldfinger), but it was such an awesome Bond film that features amazing spy-vs-spy action and Connery on top of his game. I still consider Connery's movies to be the best of the franchise, and any Bond fan need to see them for not just their quality, but their impact on later Bond films.

Yes, those first connery's are actually the only run that doesn't seem to have been interrupted by a bad bond film. After that however it seems quite hit or miss.

There are still a few gems after like On Her Majesty's secret service, the Spy who loved me, For Your Eyes Only, and the two Dalton films, chiefly for his brilliant portrayal of Bond.

Q was in Dr No. They refereed to him as Major Boothroyd (his actual name) and he gave Bond the Walther PPK after his Beretta failed in FRWL (novel, didnt happen in the movie, heck FRWL didnt come before Dr No as far as the movies are concerned).

Interesting. Well, I've never read Fleming's novels, although I probably should (if I have free time, that is).

You know, I think the cinematography during the Brosnan and Dalton eras were the least impressive of the Bond eras. It was especially dull in Tomorrow Never Dies. The Connery films shot by Ted Moore were beautifully glamorous. Freddie Young's work in You only Live Twice and Michael Reed's work in OHMSS are the gold standard. The Moore era also had decent to good stuff.

I'm glad the Craig films brought back cinematography to the early Bond levels. Even QoS, with it's choppy editing, has some spectacular wide shots. And of course, Skyfall looks to the best yet.

Yup, you should. Gives a whole new perspective on the character with an actuall story arc. Watching the movies (which were made out of publishing order) it really makes you catch things that a person wouldnt just watching a movie.

Like in Dr No (book and movie), the conversation about Bond almost being killed because his gun jammed at the end of FRWL (book). So Major Boothroyd gives him the Walther, but when it came time to do FRWL (movie) which timeline wise came 3 months before Dr No, he was still using the Walther and he didn't get shot.

Did someone ask for gifs?

Green got a choice not to drink it. And he got a choice to get back to civilisation, people can actually survive if they want to. Also, he got two shots in the back according to M, which says he most probably died of wounds gotten by Quantum hitmen, and not the oil.

Bond knows they are coming. That is the whole point. He says it. He could of put him in protective custody. Are you being serious?

It was the exact same thing that happened to Le Chiffre and Bond expected it to happen.

The new Blu Ray release is terrible. Nothing new for the latest two films and they didn't even put in the special edition version of CR with the deleted scenes. It is kind of embarrassing really.

I'd be interested in reading the books for that arc that spans across them.

FRWL was a good Bond flick. The whole Red Grant vs. James Bond arc you dexcribed was fantastic. We need another Bond film in the future thats spy vs. spy, and a character that is badass like Grant was.

Yeah, it really is. In fact, the Bond series doesn't have two great back to back movies after Goldfinger and Thunderball.

Dalton's films were okay. I liked The Living Daylights, and License to Kill is okay, but the problem with LtK for me is that it really lacks some of the fun factor of other Bond movies. It leaves me cold at times and there were times were I really wish Bond would say a Bond one liner, or if they would lighten the tone a little.

People say Dalton is similar to Craig, but Craig is more charming and has more charisma as Bond than Dalton had. I just think Dalton played the role a bit too seriously at times, which is understandable because Dalton is probably the closest to novel Bond of all the actors, but I always say the Bond's portrayal in the movies is best and should be a combination of the novels and movies.

Don't forget about The Spy Who Loved Me. I feel like that was one of the best shot movies.

I agree about Brosnan and Dalton eras. Both of them just feel like generic looking of their eras. John Glen is not really a great director visually, and that's why a lot of those movies visually are not impressive. And while Goldeneye was okay visually, the others got worse. That's what happens when you use mediocre directors.

In terms of look and cinematography: here are my top 5:

1. You Only Live Twice
2. The Spy Who Loved Me
3. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
4. Thunderball
5. Casino Royale

TSWLM has gorgeous cinematography. Namely the Egypt scenes.

And Goldeye was well shot. Especially the opening sequence with its use of shadows. Or I need to watch it again.

I love the Egypt scenes a lot. When I saw those scenes of Bond walking around Egypt, and the scenes where he first meets Jaws and Agent XXX, I had a feeling I was watching a Roger Moore Bond movie that's unlike the others.

Too bad Gilbert's follow up Bond movie Moonraker was a jumbled mess. They should have done For Your Eyes Only next like originally planned.
