Honestly, I'm on board with it. Much like with Ledger, it seems Leto's been given the freedom to mold this character as he's seen fit. I like the artistic liberation this character presents to actors.

I also quite like the idea of the Joker having an affinity for voodoo shaman, and thus marked himself with his own brand of "tribal" tattoos.

It's a different spin on the character. As a self-contained interpretation, I've come around.

I like the flashy neon cover of Joker on the Empire mag. You can't miss him. He wants to make sure you see him.

But the Arkham stills are my absolute favorite. Best look at the Joker for me.

Yeah. My favorite Joker "look" is still Nicholson's. But for this universe and this story, this look is fantastic. I'm excited about it. Its something new, not the same ol' same ol'.

Agreed. Nicholson's look is the most visually pleasing out of the four (Romero, Nicholson, Ledger, Leto) but the other looks work in their own worlds.

as far as the "look" goes, B&R's Bane is more comics faithful than the one in TDKR. The problem with B&R Bane is more characterization than appearance.

Same. And it's just a look. He still retains all of the characteristics of The Joker as we've seen from the set videos and Suicide Squad trailer. The look has grown on me. That's Joker.

What's great is that it's wildly different aesthetically from both Ledger and Nicholson's Jokers, but it's still very much "The Joker" and easily recognizable as the iconic villain that he is. Also, everything points to the characterization being completely on point.

It just speaks to the greatness of The Joker as a character that, like Batman, he can be interpreted in so many different ways but still keep the essence of what makes the character great and unique.

Romero, Nicholson and Hamill have all presented us with a "traditional" aesthetic for the character.

While it would have been nice seeing a traditional Joker put up against a now-traditional Batman, I can't begrudge them for wanting to change things up. I've got three other celebrated interpretations to fall back on if I want my classic look fix.

When I first saw the Joker, I was surprised by the tattoos. I didn't hate them, they were just unconventional for the Joker.

The more I see this Joker, the more I like him. Those eyes!

I think Leto is going to kill (literally) as the Joker. I could almost see the tattoos just being thing done on a whim, because he likes the pain of getting them done and likes to see others imitate him, or as an extension of the idea of "war paint" a la The Dark Knight (meaning intimidation).

Maybe the tattoos are there to represent Batman's failures. Maybe that's why he has the bird (robin?) tattoo. He killed Robin and wants to rub it in Batman's face. Maybe every "HA" is a person he's killed.

My point is, I feel like it adds a new depth to the character without depending on things like backstory. Rather, I see them as an extension of his derangement and psychosis.

Today is I got over my problems with this Joker. He looks great. I hope Joker with that jacket and Croc interact in this film. I'd love a variation of the "new shoes" line from Asylum in this movie.

This is sort of my take on everything DC. Don't like some aspect of the current take? Good thing there is about 75 years of other material to fall back on. These characters have been reinvented for longer than most of us (maybe all on the boards) have been alive. There's something for everyone.

the joker in comics has looked much more pimp-esque before though, fedora and all.

Yeah, this style is just a modern twist of the elements which have already been done in the comics. The tattoos and grill are really the only new components, but I've personally gone accustomed to it.

My focus was always his "face", and it's by far closer to what I had imagined than Nolan's take. That alone has me satisfied.
