The actors chosen to play Joker are getting progressively prettier. :funny:

Eh, I would argue that WB had a plan in place even back then for sequels. They did make 4 Superman movies after all. However, Burton likely knew that if he brought the Joker back in a sequel, he ran the risk of making he same movie over again. Plus, if you consider the fact that his Batman had no problem killing his enemies, then the idea that he somehow WOULDN'T kill the man who murdered his parents is ludicrous.

I agree, but I also think they were probably thinking traditional sequel versus the singular story style franchise. Pretty much new villain / new story. Which is fact, they ended up doing.

That was one of the things that bugged me about "Returns". With the exception of the throwaway line about Vicki, there wasn't any reference or connection to the first film. It didn't really seem like a proper sequel.

Yeah, that always bugged me too. Come to think of it, I remember reading an interview with Burton back then where he said that the only way he could do the movie is if he did everything possible to NOT make it a sequel, which is why even Wayne Manor and the Batcave look completely different. It's kind of a weird approach to take: almost like he was embarrassed of his first movie or something. I guess using old sets and things bored him, but I felt like Gotham in the first Batman was perfect. It was the right balance of realism and comic book aesthetic. In Batman Returns, he went overboard with all the stupid statues and sh**. Wayne Manor looked like a damn house from a model train set.

Burton has said he wasn't fond of BATMAN '89 labelling it as more of a marketing phenomenon than anything else (Jon Peters influence on the film didn't help).

BR is the Batman film he would have made the first time if WB, Peters and Guber weren't breathing down his neck.

Huh. Well, in that case, maybe Jon Peters isn't as much of an idiot as I thought. Because I'll take Batman 89 over BR any day of the week. I've never really cared for BR; Batman feels like a background character and I hated the changes to Catwoman's origin. I felt like Batman '89, while not realistic by any means, still kept enough realism there that you could kinda believe that the story could happen in the real world. That's always been something DC has don't pretty well with its solo Batman titles over the years; he does fight some superpowered bad guys but most of his enemies and allies (in Batman-centric stories) are just normal people. I hated how Burton felt the need to make Catwoman supernatural.

Really? Catwoman's origin bothered you? What about Penguin? Heck what about Joker? these decisions made today would have gotten slaughtered by todays fans. To be honest it's the Burton films that make me not so beholden to whatever is considered "canonical" something that is clearly ever changing, because those films have far more character and personality than pretty much 80% of what superhero films are churned out today (and it's got nothing to do with quality just how these films feel like they actually influenced as much as they took inspiration from) wheras a lot of the MCU are just moving versions of what is available to read.

As a kid I was a much bigger fan of Batman Returns but now I just find it alienatingly bizarre.

I hated Batman Returns when I was a kid, but it eventually became my favorite pre-Nolan Batman film. I even like it more than TDKR.

Returns was always "odd" to me.

I know it was criticized for being too dark & that's what led to the Schumacher films, but I found it weird (I now know that's Burton's style).

Still, elements like the large duck, grocery store batmobile, circus gang, etc. didn't mesh well for me. I enjoy it, but I do think it's strange.

I think it's the most polarizing of all the batman films.

I agree with him.

As a hetero man, I'd have to say that Heath was better looking than Jared. Jared is a good looking dude but he's a bit girly looking. And Jack was definitely a handsome guy back in the early 70's.

There is also that Prince soundtrack.

Tattoos are terrible, the teeth are terrible, his voice is a rip off of Ledger's.

I can't see any reason which justifies the choice for the tattoos. And all the gold and 'gangsta' crap. Not The Joker, aesthetically anyway. A Joker with tattoos can't be a good depiction because it is a misunderstanding of the character. BVS bombed, this looks ridiculous. I don't understand how WB can F**k Up such a wealth of characters and stories... DC will never get its chance and it sucks

Agreed. At least Zack Snyder not directing this so it have chance to be good. Leto acting looks good.

How is a Joker with tattoos a misunderstanding of the character?

He not that stupid to put damaged on his dead. Everyone already know he crazy. It like if he write his name his head.

"his voice is a rip off of Ledger's"
Is probably one of the most ridiculous complaints of seen so far about this joker.
