Question, is there any sort of reference or anything to Harley and Joker’s relationship as being abusive in the film at all?

Well. The electroshock torture scene is still there, at least..

Indeed. The only times I have seen Joker actively seek out Harley is when he's got a specific use for her, or she has something he wants e.g. when she teamed with Ivy in BTAS, he tracked her down and tried to take all the loot they'd stolen together.

Well, since this interpretation took a lot of inspiration from the Joker graphic novel, I don't think it's that much of a surprise. In said novel he breaks down crying to Harley, which Jonny Frost personally witnesses.

And now that I think about it there isn't really any reference to their abusive relationship there either.

I remembered loving Joker (Graphic Novel) when I was younger but the more I think about it, despite Lee Bermejo's incredible art, the more I dislike it.

Quite literally nothing, besides the electroshock scene. I also have this weird feeling the chemical bath is also edited to change the context or was reshot.

Leto was... "really, really bad". Yeah, editing didn't help but even those bits... Damn, he was annoying.

So one of Ayer's main inspirations for Joker in Suicide Squad was Azzarello's Joker.

That was pretty much my impression seeing Leto's character in the film, with a hint of Grant Morrison's Joker from All-Star Batman & Robin.

"Jared Leto’s Joker was inspired by Brian Azzarello’s Joker one-shot, Batman: The Killing Joke and his first ever appearance in 1942"

Heath Ledger's Joker was heavily inspired by TKJ but this one? No, just no.

It seems the editing has cut out almost all of Leto's most "Joker" moments.... because what we got was certainly not The Joker I know from the comics and movie.

Even his introductory scene in the asylum was pretty low key.

He only had brief scenes, but so far, Leto doesn't touch Nicholson or Ledger.

Yes ... But it is edited horribly.

The editing is this movie's worst enemy, really.
A clip of that scene was shown on The Tonight Show - is the editing for the scene like that in the movie?

I didn't feel like he had presence, and I actually found him hard to understand at times. He needed to speak louder or something.

Ayer doesn't get Joker and Harley's relationship at all. Joker can't love. He keeps Harley around because her obsession over him feeds the narcissistic side of him. Joker wants attention and Harley gives it to him. He doesn't love her. He can't love. Joker is so manipulative of Harley and he almost always acts relieved when she's not around. Joker would never do pretty much everything he does for her in this film. To make things worse, she practically wears the pants in the relationship in this film.

Making the biggest villain in their new universe the soft innocent subplot will hold back future installments. His characterization has been botched. I can't see this Joker harming a fly. All Batman's got to do his threaten to harm Harley. It'll stop every one of this Joker's schemes.

Batman: don't poison Gotham's water supply!!
Joker: what are you going to do about it?
Batman: I'll kill Harley!
Joker: OK!!! OK!!! *surrenders*

Joker has zero emotional weaknesses. Also, it's more than just comic fans. Joker is known in pop culture as the most bat**** crazy, fun super villain. The crux of an emotional weakeness literally makes the whole character collapse on itself.

The only person Joker arguably loves is Batman. Joker will ALWAYS pick Batman over Harley.

I mean, damn, Joker came off so innocent, like Godzilla or King Kong. He doesn't know what he's doing is wrong, but he really can love. He came off heroic at the end...

I liked Leto's performance, but this wasn't Joker.

Also, like what in the literal ****. Batman is "too crazy" to settle down with a girl, but Joker isn't?

This. Ayer didn't get the Joker to me. I thought the acting was ok and could've been better if had more to work with. Couldn't believe we didn't get any physical abuse towards harley. I was underwhelmed.

Cannot believe how badly the Batman chase scene is edited.

what are the odds that Leto never gets to attempt to play the joker again? will he be in the next batman film? i hope i never see him again but doubt that is going to happen

imo there's a.....2% chance we will never see him again.

Agreed. The Joker only loves himself and Batman, because he views him as a great challenge and, perhaps, one of the few things that is interesting in the world and worth bothering with in life. IMO, he views Batman as the closest thing out there to being his equal. Harley doesn't come close. Like Batman said, the Joker had Harley pegged for hired help the minute she walked into Arkham.

One of many problems I had with Leto's Joker - they added 'sounds' to Leto's performance but it was so loud and quite clear it's not something a human being can naturally do... it was so bizarre. I don't know if they were trying to make his screen-presence stronger and just copied this moment from TDK.

There was many things in that GN I found off, including that. The implication that Joker raped Johnny Frost's gf is another.
