From BvS thread, no idea if it's real or not. LiveTreacherous just posted the photo with no explanation. :D

Something that has crossed my mind is, do they intend to keep the tattoos permanently? Going through that for make up for every day of filming is a bit of a mammoth task. I don't think they will do all of them every time, since he's unlikely to be topless throughout the entirety of the film, but it's still a fair amount of work.

I was thinking a similar thing. Maybe he doesn't actually have the tattoos and grill. It could just be an elaborate troll or a creative way to promote the character.

Aw man... I don't really like it. :csad:

I'm fully behind a new portrayal of The Joker and the casting of Leto got me seriously excited as he is simply a wonderful actor, capable of transforming himself with ease. So while I appreciate the elasticity of the character and how he can and should maintain multiple visions by a variety of actors and directors (writers and artists, etc)... this particular one just isn't doing it for me.

I don't care for the tatoos at all, especially the ridiculous 'damaged' sign across the forehead. As someone mentioned earlier, it would have been more effective if it had said 'SANE'. He clearly won't be topless for the majority of the movie, but they still aren't my cup of tea. He doesn't even seem all that perma-white to me. He simply looks like a sickly, pale person. Even the hair seems off.

I get what they are trying to do with the grill and purple sugical glove, but it's a little too on the nose. It's like something out of Saw and that's just not The Joker to me. He's scary becasue of the dichotomy of his appearance. As Paul Dini once said... it's the combination between ''the clown and the killer''.

It's a great photograph, with a really scary character... but it's not THE JOKER.

Can you imagine what Snyder would have done with the character, with a Wilkinson costume?

It's early days, but this initial photo gets a thumbs down from me.
You guys should get off that high horse with Snyder/Wilkinson. I like those two, but you don't know what they would have done with the Joker. Who's to say Snyder didn't have a say into Leto's Joker and his look?

Besides, we haven't even seen Leto in a proper Joker suit.

Watch it be gone at some point. I'm usually right about these things. I won't say how...It's freaky :wow:
Like the tattoo ink gets washed off when combined with a substance (that Harley Quinn sneaks in) and the solution becomes an acid he uses to melt the locking mechanisms in his cell? Allowing him to break free? :cwink:

People who fake things always take a picture of it on a monitor or printed out poster to hide the fakeness of it. This miiiight be legit somehow, but there's no way to be sure it isn't. At least tineye and google reverse image search turn up no matches.

On his right arm, there is a tattoo that looks like a collapsed wing or a dead bird. Perhaps a reference to Jason Todd? Or maybe I am reading too much into nothing.
I saw someone point out the same on Twitter. I hope that's what it is and the reference ties into transpired.

I hope the fan backlash makes them change the design or at the very least tone it down. At least dump the teeth and the forehead tattoo, I can live with the rest despite how stupid it is. So far most people either hate it, or are making fun of it. Pretty telling response.

It's a shame because if you strip that image of it's absurdities it's actually pretty good. Had they left out the tats and the teeth I think it would be getting praised today instead of gutted.

If they changed something every time a bunch of whiney forum nerds threw a **** fit they would never actually get anything done.

Whatever, the response is overwhelmingly negative across the board. It's not just "whiney forum nerds". The large majority don't like it. Rightfully so.

Have people really been whiny in here, or are they simply stating they dislike the look and the other half are annoyed about that? With this picture, it's obvious there was going to be a divide of some sort.

Yeah the negative response to this is pretty huge. A lot bigger then anything else IMO. Honestly, all they need to do is get rid of that darn forehead tattoo and a lot of people would be happy. It's just a minor thing for them to do.

No, nobody is whining, that's just Astro's opinion because he's one of the few who does like it.

I'm sticking with my opinion that this is a stylised photo shoot. The tattoos are far too on-the-nose.

No, they should stick to their guns because it honestly would be worse to make it a crowd-sourced production.

In any case, I've slept on it and I'm starting to get around the idea this is Snyder and Ayer messing with people on Joker's anniversary. Which isn't to say they will have a completely different look (I think the skin, lips, and hair are accurate), but they've added some things they knew would rouse fans and mainstream audiences alike.

I'm fine with the tattoos (don't love 'em), but it does seem a bit convenient this debut picture falls on his anniversary and is so overt with self-celebration.

I don't know. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. But it does make sense.

Agree to disagree. Obviously they shouldn't change something every single time but in a case by case basis I think it's smart to remove something that upsets the people who you need to buy your product.

Do we really need a history crash course into all the times the audiences totally did a 180 on their first impressions?

No because there are just as many examples of audiences being right about their skepticism.

The more I look at it, the more I think the tattoos are just for the photo.

It's possible. The Joker is effectively wearing a lot of Joker "logos", which would make sense as a kind of 75th anniversary celebration. That doesn't really explain the annoying facial tattoos or the teeth-caps, though.

I think the key is probably considering if this is what David Ayer's Joker would reasonably be, in contrast with Nolan's, in contrast with Burton's..
I don't know too much about him as a director or his stylistic choices, but if it seems Ayer, then it makes sense. This is his incarnation..

Looking at it again today, I still like it, still think the forehead tattoo is lulz. I don't love it - more am in awe of it - but if Leto's skill is anything to go by, I think I will.

I for one like it cause I was hoping for something that would separate Leto's Joker from Ledger's. I don't mind the tattoos at all. The forehead one could go though but either way I like it. He looks as insane as I imagine he would be. And not only that, but this photo gives me an idea of the tone they might be going with for this "Suicide Squad" movie, and it looks fun. We need some of that in the DCCU.

Here's the thing about that. A good amount if not all the people complaining, care about the character in some fashion. I have a history teacher that doesn't give two licks about any of this for example. If one cares enough about a change like this to proactively hop on the net somewhere and document their deeply passionate opinion(I assume this is what you are talking about seeing all over), then this same person is no doubt going to by a ticket. That's just the way it goes. All of these detractors are walking tickets sold. Just like with MOS even. Are you going to watch SS or are you actually going to skip it because of this? Clearly you have some relationship with it, more so than say budapest hotel for example.

What's hard is getting people that don't give a damn to go out and spend money and all this commotion(both good and bad) has just proved WB has a huge thing on their hands. Each time WB/DC unveils one of these characters it goes trending(not quite bruce jenner trending which is kinda ironic but) big time. I think the GA are like flies drawn to heat and light when it comes to big event controversy, water cooler commotion like this personally.

Secondly, this is coming off of maybe the most celebrated portrayal of a cbm character in general ever(if you account for critically/oscars etc as well). Of course there is going to be kick back in any direction they go, even if they straight app'd Heath.
You may or may not remember what kinda response there was when Heath was cast and more to the point, when his first photo was released. It was enough for any self centered fanboy to suggest the studio may want to change things because of the amount of detractors...
I mention Heath, not simply because it's the go to for shooting down this kinda knee jerk fanboyism, but because it was a bold change in the cinematic mythos of the joker coming off of a celebrated performance prior. Black around the eyes, non perma white, inelegant irish smile scar..

It's rather interesting how many times we fans find ourselves in this position. Maybe after the 34th time pre judging based on preconception is proved fickle, we'll all finally try going about things differently.

Also, not sure if anyone has seen the Grance Randolph video but it's a classic imo.
