I am fairly new to comics. I read joe q's bio on wikipedia, and it says that he strongly pushed trade paperbacks, so they are sold at major bookstores. Since I am a new fan, being able to buy anything recent in trade paperback form has helped me keep up to date with my favorite titles. I can't imagine how hard it would be for me to catch up the the present if I had to buy individual issues. Also, I first got into comics by browsing the trade paperbacks that were at borders, and then buying them from a comic shop.
I have heard from a lot of people that joe q is responsible for bringing a lot of characters back into prominence. I don't know how much of this is joe q's doing, but to me it seems like there is so much diversity in marvel right now, and i'd bet that there are marvel books out right now to satisfy anyone's tastes.
I am new to comics, and one of the reasons I pretty much only pay attention to marvel is because it is so easy to jump on different titles and get caught up. There are so manny current books, as well as trade paperbacks that I want to pick up badly, I never have enough money to buy everything that I want (which is unusual for me, since I RARELY spend a lot of money on anything). Captain America, Ultimate Spider-man, and Astonishing X-men are sooooo addicting for me. I want to start on daredevil, but I don't know a good starting point and cannot afford any new books right now
I jumped on Spidey at the start of civil war. I think the back on black concept/story isn't bad (much better than what I would expect from an attempt to jump on the movie's hype). The main problem with it is the writing itself. ASM could be much much better with the same story if the dialogue was improved.
