The Dark Knight Rises Johnny Depp Talks Riddler Rumors

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Johnny Depp playing The Riddler.

The guy has an amazing range and would do a fabulous job as the character. I can't wait to see him play Dillenger in Public Enemies and see what his role is like in Imaginarum of Dr Parnassus.

Depp with Nolan would definitely be wonderful. But I honestly can't see Nolan going with him. Atleast not for a Batman film. I think for Riddler he would go with less of a mainstream actor.

oh, for god's sake.

why don't we cast depp in every role, have depp write the screenplay, direct the film, make the toys and market the whole thing?

seeing as he's perfect for absolutely every role ever and all.

lol no kidding.

Does everyone remember when people were saying that Robin Williams would play The Joker in TDK? That was ridiculous. :whatever:

i really wish fanboys have a better excuse for not casting depp just because "everyone wants him in their movies"...acting as if hes shoved down peoples throats or something...lol...

nolan will simply hire whoevers best for the role, whoever can create what he feels a complex character. very much doubt hell discriminate just because someones supposedly too big or just because theyre indie...i mean, do people forget that morgan freeman, the other old black guy that appears in seemingly every film, is in this franchise?

Finally someone who is making sense!!

Depp is awesome, though he doesn't need to be the go-to guy for everything. He might not be appropriate for this.

Wow, logic. Hadn't seen that for 2 pages.

:whatever: at the people putting down Depp's acting talent.

He is a phenomenal actor. Yes ok he's not as good as Daniel Day Lewis, but who is? DDL does like one movie every 5 years. As far as regularly working actors, Depp is one of the best. I also like how someone with his enormous talent doesn't shy away from odd genre-related roles like Sparrow or Wonka (which i didnt actually like but still i cant deny the man has talent).

Frankly the 'Depp is overrated' stuff just sounds like cynical "anti-popularity" backlash.

If everyone is suggesting Depp for every role, there's a reason for it. It's because he's damn good.

I love Depp, but I can't see him being in a Nolan Bat-film. While it would be untrue to say that Nolan's films aren't star-studded, they almost entirely shy away from the 'glamorous' big names, of which Depp is one.

I like the suggestion of Guy Pearce, and I reckon that, if the film gets made, and if the Riddler is in it, it will be him.

Am I the only one who finds the "Johnny Depp is overrated" comments more annoying than the Johnny Depp should be riddler comments? I mean, really, come up with a better excuse for him not to be The Riddler.

someone on the first page said "because he's too old" and I'm going to go with that one as well.

It seems that the fans objecting to the Depp as the Riddler or Jolie as Catwoman rumours are the ones who thought that the Burton/Schumacher/studio ploy of casting very well known, in most cases A-list leading man/ladies as the bad guys (a practice that originated from the 60s tv series) took the focus off the main character (Batman).

And they're right it did (outside of fandom most general audiences would've agreed that Keaton is overshadowed by Nicholson in the first one and Michelle in RETURNS). But ultimately that's because Keaton, Kilmer and Clooney were (unlike Bale) reduced to guest stars in their own movies.

If we do see big names (Depp, Jolie, Damon) play villian parts whilst Nolan still has the director's chair I'm confident that the production team have a much better grip on things than Burton and Schumacher ever did (thanks mostly to studio interference) so that the focus always comes back to THE character we came to root for.

like people focusing on now dead so super famous Heath Ledger instead of joker

That's not the same at all. Heath absolutley DISAPPEARED into that role. You couldn't tell it was him. Not just through his acting, either, but also the make-up. It completely disguised him. I'm sure very few people while watching that film even thought about Heath Ledger. He was just the Joker.

Now, Johnny Depp is a very capable actor, and quite good at being a chameleon, but the truth is the character of Riddler just doesnt offer that same chance. With Depp as Riddler, we'll just be seeing Johnny Depp in a green suit. He'll completely overshadow the role.

He's not even that great for the role. There are so many other actors out there that suit the role better. Depp is just such a boring, generic choice. I dont think we'd be seeing anything new with Depp.

And as for Angelina Jolie, since the subject was brought up, she's just a terrible actress. Seriously, what has she ever done that was any good? You want an idea of Jolie as Catwoman? Watch Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Frightening, isn't it?

Nice to see him address the rumors. Ridiculous. Ironically though, him actually talking about it/acknowledging it somehow makes me warm up to the idea.

I think its a horribly uncreative choice, but I guess that doesn't make it bad. The only thing that bugs me is people who think its already fact less then 2 months after TDK has came out.

I know, it drove me crazy.

How biased and ignorant.

What has she ever done that was any good? On the top of my head, there was

Gia
Girl, Interrupted
The Bone Collector
Alexander
The Good Shepard
Wanted

Don't use a lackluster film for an example and say 'ooh see, she's terrible!'

Katsuro dude, you really got to expand your Jolie movie list to things other than action movies, which she does for the money obviously. you should check out A Mighty Heart, Beyond Borders, Girl Interrupted (which she won an Oscar for) and Gia. if you're not familiar with Jolie's level of acting competency trust me when i say she's a female Christian Bale (or maybe rather Bale is a male Angelina Jolie). these are the type of actors that can just sit idly by and get work based purely on their looks but they would rather tear themselves down and transform themselves for a role. yes dude, she is that good. please dont be distracted by the tabloid garbage that flood the supermarket aisles.

Since when has Depp ever overshadowed a role he was playing? And I'm not referring to his hordes of fans that admittedly do come off as annoying and tempt my desire to peg down Depp's high pedestal. He's brought everything but himself into these performances.

You talk about Ledger's immersion, yet this is something Depp has made notorious for his career in the past decade. Besides, with Nolan at the helm here, and Depp surely knowing he's following one helluva performance....can you really expect either of them to fail?

George Wallace
Gia
Girl, Interrupted
Good Shepherd
A Mighty Heart

And you may also wanna check out Eastwood's latest flick, Changeling, which Jolie stars in. It's been getting a lot of early buzz Oscar talk for her and the movie.

I'm hoping more for Johnny Depp to play Joker in the future... as long as he doesn't play him as Jack Sparrow. Give him a fresh feeling, but still stay true to Heath's Joker. I think Depp has the capability. And no, I'm not one of those Depp-fans who cast him for everything. I avoid casting him in my mind for anything unless he's a "duh-yes!". And no, don't confuse "duh-yes" with "obvious-choice"... everybody thinks Depp deserves to play everyone: not true. But I do think he's a duh-yes for Joker.

Left: Johnny Depp (obvious)
Right: Heath Ledger (not so obvious)

The right picture, at first, I thought was Depp, but later realized it was Ledger. Depp has the look, and as you all know, the makeup almost completely hid Ledger's true face! Take someone who looks similar to him (Depp) and put the makeup on and you have a winner! Now all that's left is the acting... Johnny is capable, as long as Nolan reminds him "don't Sparrow-fy him!" If he doesn't do this, he can definatly pull it off! And as for the voice, Heath's normal voice and Depp's normal voice are slightly similar. Depp's is deeper, but Heath's has more of an accent (duh). Depp, I believe can pull off the Joker-sound. Hey, I can, and my voice is deep, and I'm not that good of a voice actor. If I can do he, Depp sure can.

There's only one person on this Earth I'd personally trust the character of Joker with at this point, after Heath's death and that's Depp. And obviously Joker MUST be brought back in. One movie in a series is not enough for Batman's most famous rogue. After Joker there's only so far you can go to draw mainstream interest. Riddler, on the other hand, I'd trust him with a whole array of actors, including Depp. But why cast Depp as Riddler (who you can cast someone else for) when Depp's so perfect for Joker!?

This "Heath-only" mentality has got to go... Most everyone doubted Heath (including me)... he gave no fore-evidence that he can play someone as cookey as Joker, but yet he pulled him off perfectly... Depp, on the other hand, has given plenty of evidence that he play someone cookey, but yet we doubt him because now, after seeing Heath, we only trust him. It was similar when only Jack was the Joker... About 60 percent of every Batman fan (guess-work) said "Jack-only!", but now look at what's happened. Heath has pwned Jack. Heath is not the only man in the world that can play Joker. Depp can. Maybe not as good. Maybe better. Point is, if Joker is to return (which is very much needed), Depp's Nolan's man!

I have to agree with a lot you have said here. I wouldn't mind seeing Depp in third one (if they have it) whether he be the Joker or the Riddler. I also like the idea of Guy Pearce too. I htink he would be a good Riddler as well. As far as Jolie for Catwoman I think that would be a bad choice. Someone else mentioned it, unless they covered her whole face with a mask it wouldn't be that hard for someone to tell she was Catwoman because her lips are a dead give-away. Unless Batman/Bruce Wayne developed Cataracts or Glacoma lol........

I wouldn't mind seeing Kate Beckinsale in the role of Catwoman or even Hallie Berry. She could have a do over from that horrible mess that was the Pitof Catwoman movie. That movie had so much potential and especially since they cast Hallie Berry as Catwoman but they screwed it up royally.

Depp is overrated. Said it once, will say it many times before. He's a great actor, yes, but not the only great actor out there. Anytime there is a male role open up for any project with a large fanbase (whether it be a comic book movie, video game adaptation, etc) the first choice by fans is almost always "JOHNNY DEPP!!!!!111"

Regarding Depp in the Nolanverse, no. He's too old. Nolan said it himself that he's looking for younger and fresher faces for his franchise.

Seriously, expand your horizons, people. There are much better actors out there and tons more suitable for these types of roles.

While this is true he is an incredibly amazing and talented actor. Personally if you combine sweeney todd, edward scissorhands, willy wonka, and some face paint you have a very creepy and probably damn interesting joker. God bring him back Nolan.
