What's wrong with people wanting to think this is Nolan's "Robin". Sure he may not be in a cape and mask, but wasn't Tim Burton's going to be a mechanic? Blake is young, he's a cop, he seems to be inspired by Batman, he seems to he tied to the orphanage, but he also seems to be more than your "average" cop. If people wanna see him as this version of Robin, let 'em.
Just based on these post and the little we know about Blake I think his role is something more than that just of a cop.
These two post and some of the stuff that bosef has said also leads me to believe that Blakes role is at least important. Not necessarily that he's going to don the Batsuit or something like that but there's certainly more to the character it seems.
Bruce does get injured and his identity revealed in the first third of the film; it's as Bruce AND Batman they he reclaims the city, doing something his father always dreamed, becoming a symbol as both man and superhero. It's this closure that enables him to retire with Selina. And he does, passing on the torch to....Red Herring.
Mark this post because when the film comes out I want an Edible Arrangement as an apology for the doubting/hating that's sure to come.

It's hard to talk about this without giving everything away but there's validity in both my post and his post.
Blake's place in very important. He's primarily your insight into the mind of Gotham. He is a Gothamite. His character has to be average so we can understand what the average citizen thinks.
However; where his journey leads him and what happens in the end, that's something more.
But it's the end. The very end.
Its safe to say, even when we see the film people will be discussing the same issue with the same amount of polarization
People will twist things to see whatever they wish to see and make it so they can never be "wrong".
People who want it to be "Robin" bad enough will just say that if he helps Batman in any way he will be "Nolan's interpretation of Robin". ...when it is nothing of the sort and Blake is just a really important cop, just like Gordon started out as being a really important cop.
So even after Nolan & Bale debunk that there will ever be a Robin in this Nolanverse you still want to believe it could happen? By all means then, I'm not here to tell people what to do.
But if Blake was to become the New Batman which is being hinted or insinuated at in this thread then that means Gotham isnt saved in the end and it still needs a Hero like Batman at the end of the day.. I thought the point was to save Gotham so Bruce wouldnt have to be Batman anymore and he could live a normal life after restoring Gotham and inspiring its citizens to do good and be better?
So it just seems silly to me that someone new would become Batman and then he continues to be the Dark Knight. As if its that easy to go out and do what Bruce does every night that average citizens can just dress up and become superheroes and stop crime on their own... Seen what happened to those wanabe Batmen in TDK?
Marion seems to he very much more than just Miranda Tate. She appears to be a villain. However, because she is sort of ethnic it makes her Talia Al Ghul?
There's no real evidence that suggest He'd be Robin/Nightwing or anyone else. (That's not saying it won't happen)
A) He's a supporting character in the movie. Whereas other cops, Ramirez, Loeb etc weren't.
B) He still seems to be doing some sort of covert work (marking buildings) while Bane is in control of the city.
C) He seems to share a lot of scenes with Bale and Oldman.
D) He seems to have a very Robin like backstory. Young man, possibly orphan inspired by Batman, takes to crimefighting.
The average Gothamite story doesn't appeal to me at all, since he is
brutally killed, to me it gives a "if you follow Batman, you die" message.
As opposed to someone not ordinary who chooses to go above and beyond saving merely themselves, like the Gothamites, but trying to do more, like Bruce, like Gordon and like Dent.

Good point. I mean Bruce even before training with ra's was able to engage and defeat half a dozen men at once. He already was extraordinary before training. And even after training, it atoll took him awhile to become a competent batman. I don't buy this "Blake becoming batman" not only for this reason, but it's definitely a big part of it. Like you said, it ain't easy being batman. And for a cop to just take up the mantle would cheapen things.

I think what's REALLY hard about the questioning of Blake's character is that we as fans are thinking EVEN MORE highly of him and waiting to see that big surprise.
Honestly, I just think he's going to be a really AWESOME and MEMORABLE cop character; WE ALL want JGL to be our Dick Grayson or Azrael in the end........ I don't think that will be the case, but I won't say no per say...

i know you think you have a point here but you don't. that's Tate, this is Blake. I will yield at evidence supporting his character, not evidence supporting another and then in turn we assume that can be taken for others.
Plus as you may know I argued vehemently that just because Marion was 'ethnic' that didn't necessitate Talia. I still stand behind that, though it appears she will be Talia, I take my assumption from more concrete evidence.
That always reminds me of that picture of the 'hahas' making the Bat symbol in TDK.
Either way Covert work doesn't suggest, necessarily he's more than an average cop. If what we know about TDKR is true and Gotham is on lockdown, any police work will be covert.
C) He seems to share a lot of scenes with Bale and Oldman.
Hm... Aside from the Ball and the escorting scenes what other do we know of Blake and Bruce together?
And he's a cop, of course he has scenes with Oldman. That doesn't necessitate he's more than a cop.
[quote[D) He seems to have a very Robin like backstory. Young man, possibly orphan inspired by Batman, takes to crimefighting. [/quote]
Whoa, whoa, whoa!
He's young...so are a lot of people. POSSIBLY an orphan, we're not sure about that. We know he's been seen with Orphan's though. It's still 50/50 awesome whether that's the case.
And who said he's inspired by Batman? because of those symbols? Maybe he's trying make it seem as if Batman was behind a crime. We simply don't know. We have to look at the info we have in as many facets as we can.

All ordinary people. They weren't crime fighters or superheroes before they started protecting Gotham. They were average men who took over a charge to protect their city.
With so much history going down and Batman being seen as a possible villain you will need the average Gothamite's take on the situation. This film is as much about Gotham as an entity as it is about Batman.
Blake's role is crucial to understanding how this story is going to end. What the effects of these events are taking on the psyche of the City.
In TDK we just watched as the soul for Gotham was talked about, in TDKR we'll actually get to see the soul of Gotham in action by watching Blake.
You're confusing Average with doing nothing. Blake is not extraordinary, he is a Gotham citizen tied to Gotham's fate. He doesn't have money to just take a jet to leave, or power to demand the change he wants.
that gives puts in the perfect place to be the face of Gotham and someone Gotham can ultimately trust in lieu of...
Rag, you make some food for thought comments. But, in the tone of your replies you speak as if you know something we don't. Have you read the script? Because if you know matter of factually how this things ends you can stop all the speculation and discussion on this

From these comments, I'm getting the vibe of IRobot (rubbish comparison, i know) but at the end when the Robot turns out to be the 'savior' of the other Robots, rather than Will Smith's main character.
So basically it would have to be a fellow Gothamite who can help/rebuild morale in other Gothamites.
Obviously it's not going to be like that...but that sort of vibe, maybe?

but Bruce is a real Gothamite too, that's part of the revelation of this film (I suspect) he's alienated Wayne as a playboy out of touch with reality, and Batman isn't a real "man"
So Bruce realizing he's a Gothamite, these are his people and the people realizing that as well is probably a plot point. I wouldn't suggest Blake does this instead of Wayne.
However I think the sentiment you're putting across is in the right place
That is just wonderful - I love characters like that. This is one of things I liked when reading the book How to Kill A Mockingbird, which had the girl tell the story from her perspective. It's really a great way to understand Gotham.
