Ive been fully supportive of JGL as Cobra Commander-Im sure he will be great....so if youre reading this Joseph DONT LET ME DOWN!!!
The widest swath of GI JOE fans have no concept of CC's age. Dude wore masks. They could easily get away with just picking an age for the character and those that watched the cartoons or had a bucketfull of figures wont care. After casting Duke relatively young how could anyone really be surprised by a similarly young casting for CC. Its only those that went deep into the comics and backgrounds and later incarnations that will care. And the studio knows those are the people that will show up regardless.
Even though it wont really be important I think the guy actually looks somewhat snakelike. Hes got thin, somewhat beedy eyes, small nostrils, ridiculously high but flat cheekbones. And its a movie about war and military. History is full of powerhungry people who have grabbed power at young ages by sheer force of will. Napoleon was a general by 25, seized complete control before he was 30, and crowned himself emperor at 35.
Character points aside... this guy is a decent actor.
Joseph talks G.I. Joe w/ MTV News
While most of the cast of G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra has already been revealed in all their costumed glory, Joseph Gordon-Levitts take on the fanatical Cobra Commander is one thats remained firmly mysterious. Now thanks to a new chat with the actor, weve managed to learn just a little more of what to expect when the film hits theaters in August 2009.
With a number of iconic costumes in his wardrobe, the look of the character has been first and foremost on the minds of fans. Gordon-Levitt confirmed to MTV News back in April that he does wear a mask, and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told us recently that it wouldnt be the classic hood. But while weve been busy speculating over whats covering his face, would you believe its whats underneath that might be most surprising?
The cool thing about my character was that its not that digital, exclaimed Gordon-Levitt, revealing that he underwent significant changes to adapt to the role. I get to put hours of prosthetic makeup on and see a different creature altogether. Ive seen how he looks and its really cool.
The transformation into a creature falls in line with di Bonaventuras comments to MTV that the film will tell the origin of a very twisted Cobra Commander and that the figures gritty backstory will be shown in all its disturbing glory. In that interview, the producer also revealed that Gordon-Levitt will have his own take on the characters famous high-pitched screech from the 80s animated series. So what does the actor have to say about it?
I love that voice [from the cartoon], enthused Gordon-Levitt. Chris Latta is a fantastic voiceover artist, but if you did that exact voice it would sound ridiculous in a live-action movie. I guess its half Chris Latta and half me.
The vocals wont be the only thing inspired by the cartoon, but according to the star, the film is taking pains to carve out its own niche on the franchise. Everything is different, he said. I think it maintains the spirit of it and all the fun, but it brings the character into three dimensions. It wouldnt look good if you did an exact replica of the cartoon. You wouldnt want me wearing a skin-tight bright-blue dictators uniform. It would look silly.
I want to believe, I really do! But...so far typical actor boasting is not enough.
I always liked the idea of Heath as the Joker though.I agree that the casting of JGL does bare some of the same controversial similarities as Heath being cast as the Joker. Although, I didnt hate the Idea of Heath as the Joker as much as I do JGL as CC. Heath had massive shoes to fill because the Joker was played so well by Jack and the Joker is one of the greatest Villans of all time, he really had no choice but to give it everything he had. CC is up there for myself and my generation (Im 24 and grew up on GI Joe) but not to the same level as the Joker, so JGL not only has nothing to be compared too, but he also doesnt have generation after generation of people to piss off if he screws this up. Im still not convinced he will do well.. and I still think think movie will stink (Marlon Wayans is in it for Christ sake) but I am pulling for him now and hope for his career he doesnt screw this up.
Also Does anyone else think he looks like he could be Heath Ledgers twin brother?
