Guardians of the Galaxy Lee Pace as Ronan: the Accuser

I knew it was Ronan picking up Drax once I noticed the hammer, wish we had gotten a clearer look at him but this will do for now.

At the moment in the comics Ronan and Drax seem around the same level, but here Ronan obviously looks superior, unless Drax gets out of that choke hold in some awesome way.

So, if Nebula is getting matched against Gamora, and Ronan (being billed as "the main baddie" in marketing thus far) is fighting Drax, who's the Big Bad who'll battle our main hero, Star-Lord? I know Thanos is the top dog, but I feel he'll be in the background in this one. Could it be The Collector has a bigger role than it's being presented as, and he could end up as the film's primary villain?

I guess Quill is more or less fighting *everybody.*
He's got the cops (Nova Corps) after him for being a pirate and rogue, and he's got Ronan and Nebula and maybe more after him to try to steal his Orb. Plus, there'll probably be more than a little infighting with his own teammates before they learn to trust and respect him.

Don't forget the Collector!

Anyway, given it was a split second shot, I don't think we can really draw any conclusions vis a vis Ronan's power level. For all we know, he's choke-lifting Drax right after having blasted the crap out of him with the Universal Weapon.

I've noticed to same thing, I think Star Lord is going to be matched up with Korath at least it seems that way in the trailer.

So, seeing as how Ronan works for Thanos in this film, I assume they're giving him Ultimate Ronan's backstory, where he's a son of Thanos....?

^Not necessarily, it seems he is just a lackey of Thanos so far. Although he is described as the main bad guy of the movie so he maybe more than that.

Its possible Thanos is manipulating him to do terrible things.

I'm reading Guardians of the Galaxy #8 right now, from the DnA run, and it's my most prolonged exposure to Ronan the Accuser thus far in my comic reading. In the past I've only really read books where he showed up as a supporting or background player, like Infinity, but here he's front-and-centre, and man, what a badass. The issue is dominated by a fight-scene between him and Star-Lord, and it's actually a great showcase for Star-Lord too. As Quill knows he's hopelessly outmatched by a powerhouse like Ronan, and gets his ass kicked, but keeps fighting anyway.

RONAN: Do you have any comprehension of how outclassed you are?

STAR-LORD: Yeah... but I made you break a sweat.

Ah okay, man Quill should've had every bone in his body broken.

Star-Lord's interaction with Blastaar is hilarious in that issue.

I just love that Star-Lord seems to know all the worst people in the universe... and he's done something to piss most of them off at one point or another.

^Thats whats great about him as character, plus the fact that he is tough bastard and good fighter in his own right.

And of course he is good friends with Richard Ryder.

Ronan is the primary villain in this one right? Ronan and some Kree army/squadron possibly. With Nebula/Korath/Nova Corps/Collector? being additional threats and Thanos being an overarching threat looming in the shadows.

So, minor speculation:

Thanos obviously can't play a huge role in this because it would take away from his hype in Avengers 3. For the same reason Thanos can't play a huge role in a Phase 3 GotG film, my guess would be Magus/Adam Warlock and the Church. Thanos will likely still be a background threat in the sequel right? Perhaps even with a single "fight" scene where he shows off his power.

Anyway, just straightening out thoughts as to why they chose Ronan and the Kree. Marvel does like building up threats so far in the MCU:

IM1 villains < IM2 villains < IM3 villains
Thor 1 villains < Thor 2 villains
etc.

Eh, I don't think Thanos will be "in the shadows" until Avengers 3. I've been saying it over and over again, by the time Avengers 3 rolls around, I think Thanos will be a well established character

Agreed. By The Avengers 3, I'm imagining we'll have already seen him gathering all the Infinity Gems to make up his Gauntlet.

I'm thinking Ronan is going to be really cool in this. One thing James Gunn has shown an affinity for in his films is really sinking his teeth into some memorably despicable villains, from Michael Rooker in Slither to Kevin Bacon in Super.

I guess what I mean is Thanos can't have any sort of ultimate showdown until Avengers 3.

Any conflict he's in he will likely come out on top. That's why he can't be a central villain in a GotG film.

Lol yeah. Kevin Bacon was awesome in Super. That scene at the beginning when he goes to Rainn Wilson's house is hilarious.

I've been re-reading some of the old 'War of Kings' crossover issues and got to Ronan's [BLACKOUT]wedding day[/BLACKOUT]. Oh man...

[BLACKOUT]Shi'ar Imperial Guard[/BLACKOUT] whooped him so bad he was in hospital, lol.

*blackout tags for those that have yet to read it.* (I'm considerate, even when the storyline is like 5 years old) :cwink:

Yeah I was shocked at that part also, but when I re-read it I realised he was fighting 3 of them at once and the one to take him down was HUGE!

[BLACKOUT] Blackbolt got taken out as well remember, the Shi'ar clearly caught them off guard, but yeah it took 3 of them to take Ronan out which is awesome[/BLACKOUT].

Enjoy the rest of WoK, I loved it.

A friend showed me a photo of Pace as Ronan. Looks pretty much like the 3" figure with a intimidating look on his face, though the friend was less than impressed saying he looked more like a metal band front man.

The hammer is HUGE though, not knowing a hell of a lot about Ronan but seeing comic art I thought his weapon was similar to Mjolnir except in the movie it's heft two-handed weapon about 6' long at least.

Where he get the picture of Pace as Ronan?
