Barring a miracle, it is imaginably difficult for Nolan to top the Joker if he wants to truely climax this trilogy with an epic finale.

I don't see a logical closure type story for the 3rd film unless it somehow is about bringing Batman back to his roots (maybe Hush, Ras & Talia?) if they want to stay in this current stream of narrative and timeline.

What if Nolan does something unexpected and make a powerful closure film based on something like Miller's Dark Knight Returns...not so far flung into the future as that dystopian Robocop type tale...but just feature an aging Batman perhaps a decade in. Batman: Year 10? Maybe this story will be about the aging Batman having to return to finally reclaim gotham or maybe for his own salvation and all the years he has invested and all he has sacrificed and can never get back.

If you feature the same cast we can see how time has changed things and yet so much remains the same. I think it could possibly, in Nolan's hands be a much more powerful film than a standard Batman film set in the same short timeline as BB (which was Year One essentially) and DK. Whereas another Batman crime thriller as the finale might prove a Return of the Jedi to DK's Empire Strikes Back... A DK Returns or Year 10 concept frees you from the constraints of having to follow the epic oomph of DK so logically continuity wise so you can be more creative with your characters and narrative and settings, enabling you to make a final powerful movie to top them all.

It would be interesting. I can't really see it happening though.

I would rather them continue in a james bond style, with a new batman movie every few years.

I would rather go with Roman Sionis (BLack Mask) he's sort of a Dark Bruce Wayne. THis storyline can attack BOth Bruce Wayne bussines life and Batman facing the BLack mask.
and Now that the Joker is in Arkham I would Introduce Harley Quinn but as the doctor side for the joker. With Rachel gone Selina Kyle can be use but not as Catwoman, As Bruce new interested girl. Also the Riddler Storyline is not a bad idea just need the right path and It could work also. And there you have it more new key character with important roles.

That would make a good independant Batman film if there were more to go, but I feel that Nolan likes his stories to fully fleshed out and encapsulating. Everything seems plotted to lead into other things or tie back with the past. Batman Begins set the scene for crime to go underground, for Arkham to break, and the Joker to appear (Escalation). Dark Knight was meant to show Batman what he would possibly become if he continued down that same road himself, if he gave in, (the villain like Dent). It set the stage for the triumvirate's great loss (consequences of Batman escalating the game, and evil fighting back), and the darkest night before the dawn as Batman becomes the fugitive. The 3rd film has to be that dawn...It has to tie that stuff together and I don't think another 2-bit villain (especially one that is not prominent in Batman's history for both comic fans and public, even the Riddler) is going to do the trick, if not insult it.

Throwing more villains of the week into the mix isn't really going to tie the trilogy together or give it proper closure. Also, the last thing we need is another "superhero fights evil version of himself" film as is the bain of many superhero films. The final film needs to set itself apart from DK and in my mind, needs to surpass it.

Nah, I don't like the idea of jumping ahead in the story like that. It would totally break the continuity of Nolan's story arc. You can't deliver part 1 and 2 of a character's journey and then just skip over to part 6 (in a manner of speaking)...

this is how it should play out...

BB : "I'm going to be Batman."
TDK : "Am I going to be Batman for the rest of my life??"
B3 : "I'm going to be Batman for the rest of my life."

I had the same idea. But maybe something more like 5 years would be better. What toll has been taken on Bruce Wayne etc etc?

Although, doing this would almost automatically mean it needs to be a Robin movie

When I first look at the title of the thread, I thought it was about the Batman Year 100 GN and go "That's actually genius!"
It's not what you are referring to, but I think a loose adaptation of the "Year 100" graphic novel by Paul Pope would be a terrific way to go for the third film. It has Batman being hunted by the police, a world-class threat and even a version of Robin that would actually work perfectly on Nolan's world. Just set it on the TDK universe, throw in a couple classic villains and you'll have an awesome third movie.
