I think attack of legion is my favorite, though the entire trilogy is consistently great. I like to refer to revenge of irys as the dark knight of Japanese monster movies :p

If that's The Dark Knight of Japanese Monster Movies for you, where does the original Gojira land?

As if I need to ask. :p

Is anybody reading that ongoing Godzilla comic series? Is it any good? And how was the series that ran for 12 issues ending in 2012?

Depends, IDW has done two on-going Godzilla comic series.

1. Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters
2. GODZILLA

The current one is Godzilla: Rulers of the Earth.

But I think your talking about Kingdom of Monsters (2012)
Kingdom of Monsters is actually surprisingly good, although with a few minor issues. One of those problems is the pacing can seem kinda off some of the time, like it's rushing a bit fast.

And that the on-going doesn't have a central main character until issue 3 (Steve Woods).

Steve Woods is kind of a bleak cold character, but that somewhat makes him a interesting character during his introduction, although they do develop him later on. I lightly recommend this comic, but don't expect this to be a complete origin story of Godzilla. It's a soft origin story in issue one and a little bit over in issue 2. But that's about it.

In this series, this is the world's first encounter with Godzilla. And you'll love that the most out of this on-going. We...Well, put the God, in Godzilla due to our desperation and ignorance when he first awakened. How? Well, when Godzilla first shows up, he's just a normal dinosaur.

The comic then presented the number one thing, that EVERYONE believed would get rid of Godzilla.

Drop a nuke on him.....

Not only did he survive and was mutated.

We pretty much screwed ourselves by giving him his atomic breath and nuclear powers. Yeah, not the best idea from humanity XD

Godzilla Rulers of the Earth is waaay better, but you'll be a bit lost since it's a light sequel from GODIZLLA. You won't like the main characters all that much, but you will like the fact that Godzilla is much more of a character in this on-going than the previous ones. Besides being awesomely destructive, he also has some personality as well. It's an on-going worth following.
-------------------------------------------------------

But if you want to start small, with great quality, and has a good Godzilla origin with a satisfying comic end. I HIGHLY recommend Godzilla half century war.

Story Plot: Introducing a new and exciting look at Godzilla's reign of destruction, courtesy of Orc Stain creator James Stokoe! The year is 1954 and Lieutnant Ota Murakami is on hand when Godzilla makes first landfall in Japan. Along with his pal Kentaro, Ota makes a desperate gamble to save lives... and in the process begins an obsession with the King of the Monsters that lasts fifty years!

It's highly regarded as one of the best Godzilla comics to date by fans and critics, alongside Godzilla: Gangsters and Goliaths. It's a mini series, simply 5 issues, the tradeback is out so you can catch that and enjoy yourself! It truly is a great comic, smooth pacing, great character development, awesome kaiju battles, and very surprising nods to the weaponry from Toho's Godzilla films.

And even better, the comic has a human villain, and it's a funny but worthy nod xD Can anyone guess who the villain is based off of by his name?

I mean just in the way that it delves into the different points of view of what it would be like for this giant guardian turtles thing to be flying around lol for some he's a heroic monster, but to the people who are in hey he buildings when he's throwing down with gyaos he's just another giant monster destroying their home. Doesn't mean it's greatest monster movie ever made (though it's up there, but even if it was I wouldn't use the dark knight to describe it then :p )

Mothra ain't nothing to f*** with :cwink:
The movie does place in Japan too. Ken won't be stuck in his hotel room the entire time, looking out from his window.
You mean Ken isn't starring in a remake of lost in translation :woot:

Seriously, I may get flamed for this, but honestly, and I say this as someone who was raised on Godzilla movies and love the franchise, I have to admit that the 90s gamera movies are simply better made films than about 95% of the Godzilla movies. Godzilla may be more famous but gamera, at least in the 90s, really took itself seriously and elevated the genre to something beyond guilty pleasure movies.

You're not at all out of line. I honestly feel that only about 2 of the Heisei Godzilla movies can compare to the quality of the Heisei Gamera series, and I'm the biggest Godzilla fan you'll meet.

Bryan Cranston actually plays a jaeger pilot in this.

"To destroy monsters, we built a monster--we call him Heidegger."

I can only imagine for the sequel...

They should have had Barkley grow sideways and it would be a lot more accurate.

that's Barkley, constantly proving that size doesn't matter!

I need this movie tomorrow.

“The World Ends. Godzilla Rises." is the tagline for the Japanese release of Godzilla 2014.
