Well, I hear this guy might still be up for the role...

Though I'm a bit unsure if he has the proper acting ability to pull it off.

Guys, read this. It makes me think Phoenix won't take the role

http://blog.chron.com/celebritybuzz/2014/01/joaquin-phoenix-terrified-by-fans/

“I can’t get off set and away from it fast enough. I leave and I don’t talk to anybody in the business at all for a couple of weeks. I hate the beach. I don’t like travelling. I’m not being evasive. I just don’t like the things that most people would like.”
Wow...I respect the guy for doing him and keeping it real, but that's very telling. I have said this before. He really doesn't seem like a fan friendly person and the promotion and hysteria of a CBM movie and its accompanying fandom probably scares the **** out of him.

But the question is, would playing Lex Luthor be the role that suddenly tips Phoenix into a new and wholly unexpected level of fame? I'm not so sure about that. The guy's already pretty famous, to a point where I don't know how much difference it would make if he appears in his first true blockbuster.

This movie is sure to make at least a billion dollars. That'd blast him into superstardom. Right now, he's a well respected actor on the cusp of A-list, but the low profile roles he has chosen have kept him under the radar. Signing on to something as huge as this movie would catapult him to a different level of fame.

You guys are breaking my heart here.
:csad: I want him too Axl...I do, but we are a crazy bunch. Think about Depp after becoming Sparrow. He rocketed into another hemisphere. He had a fandom after that and a franchise. There are toys...kids...people dressing like him... In short, crazy fans.

We have destroyed ourselves... :argh:

Waka is an eccentric dude.

Watch his performance art/method acting/troll documentary where he tricks the world into thinking he wants to be a rapper.

I think Joaquin Phoenix is a very, very good actor. But I don't really think he's a perfect fit for Lex. Just because he's a good actor doesn't mean he's right for the role. None of his performances have sold me into thinking he'd make a great Lex.

I think people REALLY just want this movie to work, and the fact that an actor of his calibre is rumored as Lex has people foaming at the mouth. IMO he's not the best choice, but just a great actor.

The fact that he's such a good actor could mean he'd take Lex in a whole new direction, and I think that's what people are hoping for/expecting from him. But as far as accurately portraying any pre-existing iterations of Lex from animation/movies/comics, I'm not seeing Joaquin doing that. He'd do his own thing, and that could go very right or very wrong.

Phoenix would kill it. It would be another Heath as Joker and the audience wouldn't be able to take their eyes off of him. It would be mesmerizing. Mark my words.

Unless it doesn't ever happen...in which case we were all deprived of it.

I have heard about this, but never watched. lol...I might check it out just to see.

Sigh ... you're both right. I guess the best I can hope for is that Phoenix pulls a Chris Evans -- where he's initially scared to sign for the part based on the potential consequences, but then realizes that in a lucid moment of self-reflection and decides to play the role anyway.

But I think I'm going to assume from here on out that Phoenix won't be taking the part. If he does play Lex it'll be a pleasant surprise, but it'll be better if I don't get my hopes up, which means assuming that someone like Denzel Washington or Bryan Cranston already has the part (both of whom are actors I have tremendous respect for).

MrsKent26 will just bribe him with brownies and ice cream; and it's a done deal.

How fudgey does he like his brownies?! What flavor of ice cream?! If only I knew, I'd bake him goodies until I could bake no more...

Did anyone else notice stupid IMDB listed Phoenix in the BvsS cast? They did put a (rumored) beside his name and they are full of crap most of the time. But still, my heart can't take it! Why do they have to give me that vision of what may never come to pass? Damn them to hell!

Imdb is a strange site. It is clearly quite influential, but seemingly totally unrelated.

If his performance is good enough then sure, but I don't think Lex is a role with enough shtick like all the really notable villains (Joker, Bane, Loki, etc). He's already a household name and if he didn't have a certain level of celebrity status then I'm Still Here couldn't have been made.

Are Loki or Bane really household names?

I think The Joker, Catwoman and Lex are probably the three "big" comic book villain roles, because they have all been filled by highly respected actors who gave classic performances with a notable impact on pop culture.

Loki and Bane's massive boost in popularity, especially the actors playing them, is undeniable.

Sure, but I would wager a nice bottle of Port that Lex remains more widely known than either. I suspect that he is likely to be a more tempting career prospect for an actor, too.

I'd love jp as Lex BUT if I had to choose between him and Denzel, i'd pick Denzel.

I agree wholeheartedly.

There isn't enough "unusualness" with the Lex character for JP to really take it in a new direction and make it his own, like Heath did with Joker. I mean, Joker is already a totally crazy villain in makeup...Lex is just a brutally powerful businessman (hope I'm not diminishing his sadistic nature too much here). Other than the bald head (in most iterations) there isn't really much physically that could influence an actor's emotional/verbal performance of that character IMO. Sorry if I'm insulting the Lex fans out there, but I just haven't really seen a good live-action Lex yet I guess that satisfies me.

I own said documentary, I'm Still Here, and I think it's glorious.

Most people hate it or it went way over their heads.

I still need to watch that film.

Also, is that Keanu Reeves getting slugged in the face in your avvy?
