I like Josh Hartnett. He has a kind-goody 'Murican face. I can almost picture him as Harvey Dent.
Tom Cruise has the same thing going with Iron Man to me too.
Lex Luthor candidates - Joaquin Phoenix, Matthew McConaughey, Josh Hartnett.

I remember Hartnett's name being raised a lot of times over the years, but I never saw it. LOL...I bet he now wishes he had taken that role though. Dude can barely get a job now.
I'd bet he'd like to be type cast now...He's done some Indy work. I'm sure he's made his money. The reason that he passed was because he didn't want to be type-cast. I'm not sure that it really matters at this point. I did like him in Sin City and 30 Days of Night though.

and theface was for the Cruise as IM suggestion....no words.
For me I'll always wish Hartnett had gotten to be Superman I think he'd have nailed it (and evidently did when he screen tested under Ratner).
Of course I love Henry I wouldn't have taken Hartnett over him but there's no reason both actors coukdn't have played the part in different eras.
Hartnett as Steve Trevor or Harvey Dent would be ideal casting.
Harnett never felt right for Superman to me, but I would have been okay with him as Batman or maybe Green Lantern.
Part of eliminating the comic book-ie feel of the villian would be to not make a stupid villain like Billy Zane in Titanic that is just annoying and bad all the way thru which would make the audience wonder what ANYONE would see in that guy.
To make a life-like villain you have to create a character who isn't all bad all the time. He has to be a controversial figure. One of the best movie villains I've ever seen is probably Robert DeNiro in Godfather Part II. He should be a person that you can see why people would be drawn to him, or Forrest Whitaker in the Last King of Scotland... Controversial realistic villains are the only ones that would make sense in the real world. Otherwise, if they were Loki all day, they would have no allies at all. "Oh I want to bring darkness and destruction....." and then what? "hmmm I don't know... " that is kid stuff.
Exactly, those are the words I was looking for, one-dimensional. The days of the Rocky Balboa 4 villains are gone. We should have movies that make audiences think, not just these kiddie type movies with villains that have nothing like-able about them. Even real life villains have a side to them that will attract people from Castro to Bundy to Hitler. These people were not one-dimensional, they couldn't be, otherwise they would have no following.
Cruise as Stark isnt so outlandish - just ask Adi Granov.
I'm not very familiar with IM outside the films. I just can't see Cruise as IM. Maybe he could have been though.

Can someone tell me some of the best of Phoenix work? Thanks in advice.
I am not familiar with IM at all outside of Ghostface and the Wu-Tang clan...lolKeep in mind, it's been a looong time since I was an Iron Man reader, but the way that I remember the character coming off was more of a civilized businessman, not the mad-scientist that RDJ portrays. Either way, I'm glad that RDJ got the part.
Best damn fancast I've ever seen in my life!!!! Cruise would KILL that role!Cruise for Killer Croc surely?
