Live-Action The Little Mermaid

Or a better point would be instead of stunt casting remakes maybe create new princesses of different races?

I’m always a fan of doing something new. Every one should be able to get some shine. But at the same time I’m proud of this Halle Bailey chick.

This is a win win for her.

I’m really curious how redhead characters in fiction tend to get targeted for race-bending for live-action adaptations.

They’re rare enough already. Why can’t blondes be swapped instead? :o

I'm sure she'll still have red hair or highlights. Agree or not but you'll see

This is a stunt cast?

Happy for Halle! She has a great voice and has worn red braids before so I'm fairly sure she'll have red hair in this.

I like her singing, that feels like ariel to me

She does have a beautiful voice. That clip someone posted on the last page of her singing Natalie Cole’s song should be enough validation for anyone to see why Disney chose her to be Ariel.

You can’t BS a song like that.

Forks just started selling like hotcakes. I'll go grab some popcorn. This is gonna be fun (even though I couldn't care less about the film itself)!

I've seen her on Grownish and she's one of the weaker performers on there. I'm surprised they didn't go with Yara Shahidi.

I mean, do I really care about the Little Mermaid or any of these Disney live action remakes? No. So I'm not bothered. ANd I'm all for more black actresses getting roles. Especially with how much they're shafted

But yeah this is for sure a board room "We can get diversity points if we do this" strategy. I don't see why do this. Also because I have a very hard time believing that she gave the best performance in an audition based on every episode of Grown-ish...don't ask me why I've seen all of them.

I've always been kinda skeptical of race changes. I think it's much cooler when we build up something of our own like Black Panther or we should've been doing with things like Alex Cross, Shaft, Static, Vixen, Afro Samurai who have been underused.
Like it's way more meaningful to me that they made a show like black-ish rather than remaking, say, The Brady Bunch with a black cast. Or another example, making Bridesmaids is way cooler and meaningful to me than them doing Ghostbusters Answer the Call or Ocean's Eight.
We need to build our own stuff instead of latching on stuff made by people who just use us because it's trendy and because it fools idiots into thinking Company A cares about diversity. I would love a Moana, Mulan, Coco type animated movie that is about a black human character. I don't think Disney has made that in a while.
But to be fair, Disney has always been pretty good with their princess diversity. I think almost half of them are women of color.

Anyway, I doubt Little Mermaid will be anything that interests me. Even before this casting. I'm just not looking forward to the silly culture war and people thinking that they're not racist or more woke because they don't mind a race change.

Very good point!

Laughably predicable from Disney. The irony being they’ve already got a black princess in Tiana they could use in a remake but chose not to.

Would black people be mad if a live action princess and the frog made Tiana a white girl? I think comes when the sjw/ all inclusive/ representation only goes one way.
How many black Disney princesses are there compared to others? Exactly

Biologically speaking, the big hurdle is a half-human/half-fish who can sing underwater. After that, dark skin with red hair is a pretty minor conceit. :word:

Ooohh, 1 black princess. Clearly they are making their biggest hits so there is no reason to skip to Princess and the Frog at this point.

One black princess they could elevate more. Of all the 2D movies that could use a do-over Frog Princess is probably the one most worthy of such treatment because it was a very clunky movie, albeit designed well. Ariel has been a staple of their roster for 30 years. Tiana is mid-tier at best and could use a revamp. This casting is pure corporate nonsense that’s meant to make Disney look good for the blue check marks and Twitter crazies. It is stunt casting specifically designed to cause mud flinging online, and fallout is people will be labeled racist simply because they want an actress to look like a character they like, and it’s going to drag this poor girl into a situation where she’s going to be caught in the middle. If Disney were serious about creating roles for non Caucasian’s they’d actually commit to doing it instead this nonsense.

Princess and the Frog is never getting a live-action remake.

Not going to take part in this debate. Little Mermaid was never a major favorite of mine, and don't really care for these films. Most of the live-action remakes are absolute garbage anyway. So getting upset about them at this point is silly.

Because shes black and that would be white washing if they took it the other way?
