I think it’s because, in recent years, there has been a growing trend of portraying Ursula as a black woman: whether in Once Upon A Time, where she was played by Yvette Nicole Brown, or in Descendants, where she was voiced by Whoopi Goldberg, or in the official Disney photo shoot in 2011 where they had Queen Latifah portray Ursula.

Plus if they get Zendaya it plays even better into that corrupted version of a mother type role.

I’m not sure if I see Ursula as a black woman but obviously no one should be disregarded from casting unless they’re not talented or bigoted or whatever

Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina in Talks for Disney's Live-Action 'Little Mermaid'

If deals make, Tremblay would give life to Flounder, Ariel’s best friend, who is a fish. Jason Marin voiced him in the 1989 original, and the character had singing duties in the Broadway adaptation. Awkwafina would play Scuttle, the seagull friend of the red-headed princess. Buddy Hackett voiced the character in the animated movie.

James Gawd Cameron has already shot the underwater sequences for Avatar 2. WETA is working on it as we speak. So Rob Marshall will have full access to the most groundbreaking underwater visual effects (aka the next big technological leap for Hollywood) by the time TLM goes into post-production.

Makes sense for Disney to get the ball rolling on TLM. Plus, they have been scouting locations to shoot for a while nao. They have big plans for this one.

Even though McCarthy wouldn't have been my first choice can definitely see her doing a great job.

Noah works for Eric. Melissa McCarthy as Ursula is a bit harder for me to process cause I haven’t seen her do anything like it but she is a great actress so I’d be down. Someone call Kathy Bates though just in case these talks fall through.

Overall I’m glad this is making moves. I just hope they put effort into telling their own version of the story like Jungle Book and Cinderella, which I think they will.

She was my number one pick lol there is something about the character she plays as Bobby Bushay's mother in Water Boy that I think with just a few tweaks would have been perfect.

Disney’s Live-Action ‘Little Mermaid’ Casts Halle Bailey as Ariel

Chloe x Halle member Halle Bailey is ready to become part of Disney’s world.

Sources tell Variety that the R&B singer has been tapped to play Ariel in Disney’s next live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid.” Although director Rob Marshall has spent the last couple of months meeting with talent, insiders say Bailey has been a clear front runner from the beginning.
