Harry Styles? oh dear.

I hope Melissa McCarthy nails Ursula. I loved her in Spy!

People were also angry at the civil rights movement, glad the people involved were not scared of making people angry.

The fact your comparing this to a civil rights movement shows a complete lack of perspective and proportion.

I think they need a Hispanic princess movie (I'm talking animated here), and that's just speaking from pure business sense. They made The Princess and the Frog so they could have a black princess for their Disney Princess brand, but they don't have a Hispanic one when it's such a large and growing minority group in the US and a significant portion of people worldwide. More specifically, something set in Latin America.
Yeah though I prefer if they set it in South America. I don't think Disney have many animated films that featured South America. I also want more Disney Princesses even though we just got 5 in the last ten years.

#NotMyAriel is trending worldwide on Twitter. I'm scrolling through the hashtag and all I'm seeing so far is people mad that #NotMyAriel is trending.

And Disney knew exactly this would happen.

I'll reserve judgement on casting until I see/hear some more, I'd have preferred if the actress cast looked as close as physically possible to the 1989 film.. but I realise that's easier said than found as you also need someone with not just a good singing voice, but speaking voice as well considering how integral that is to the plot presuming they don't do something different from the original.

Halle Bailey, whom I'd never heard of until today, at least has an exceptional singing voice from the clips I've seen of her on Youtube.

I'll wait till the bs dies down, it's a **** show in here & on social media at the minute..

If they had casted a white girl nobody would be talking about the movie right now. Disney knew what they were doing. Bravo.

Yep, they knew exactly what this would do.

#82k tweets for #NotMyAriel right now, geez.

if this was an original mermaid movie and not a remake of The Little Mermaid and the lead actress isn't playing Ariel, I don't think people would care about the casting choice. Ariel has a certain look and some people just expected/wanted someone that looks like Ariel. And Ariel is an iconic Disney character.

Anyway, this kind of reaction is definitely not good for the film or any film as people already having negative thoughts about the film despite not seeing any clip/scene from the film. Whether the film succeeds or not in the future is another question. But right now, the buzz surrounding the film is not good.

I thought Joanna Garcia looked the part as Ariel in Once Upon a Time. I don't remember hersinging but she was fine in the role.

As if they were scared of TLM not getting buzz? That's laughable.

They aren't scared of anything apparently. I would have cast an asian women if they were going against type. Super hot.

It definitely would have gotten buzz, like a few months before it released, but not this much buzz and discussion two years out. It's already trending on Twitter.

Doubt it would have happened otherwise.

Yeah, it's definitely going to give the production more juice.

Yeah given how successful Maleficent, Aladdin, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast were/are at the box office and next month, The Lion King... The Little Mermaid would have no problem getting attention from the public.

2 years doesnt do anything, it can die down quicker. TLM was never in danger of flopping. Look at Cinderella/BatB/Aladdin, all who were relatively safe and yet somehow they made it.

Casting anyone in the spot would've gotten them talked about, of course not as much as casting a black actress but it isnt done just to get hype that they don't need.

I thought Sofia Coppola was still attached to this, sad that it's Rob Marshall.

anyone think they keeping prince eric white ?? it would be quite interesting to see reactions to having a black ariel leave her home and family for a white man

He will probably be white and there will probably be new outrage. Though I wouldn't be surprised if they put more emphasis that she is leaving for the land and not just him which I think they do in the film but is strengthend by the tv series.
