Live-Action The Little Mermaid

Yeah hopefully they go more realistic than trying to mimic the cartoon. More finding nemo, less shark tale

The closest they've come is Tim Burton, but Burton was more of an avant-garde director in the beginning of his career with Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands. Most of his films are just Burtonized versions of preexisting IPs that have gotten lazier through the years. Alice in Wonderland did make a ton of money for them, but a lot of that had to do with Johnny Depp still being a superstar at the time and the film being in 3D hot on the heels of Avatar's release. Dumbo of course wasn't as successful, so I doubt that he'll be doing anything else for Disney anytime soon.
You didn't mention Ed Wood.

I am affronted, sir! Probably his greatest achievement, although I do think it could be Big Fish...

Ed Wood and Big Fish are two of his best films and they also feel the least "Burtonized" out of his entire filmography. Ed Wood doesn't even have a Danny Elfman score.

For a moment i was convinced this was never gonna happen, lol

Oh wow can’t wait to see that in high def on the big screen. I feel soothed just looking at it!

Hopefully there's more practical on set scenes than just a couple of them. And Dion Beebe is shooting it, so it should look good.

Wonder Woman and some Amazons need to come running along that beach!

…imma wait for the trailer or official pics…

I was never worried about how she was going to look, although I'm sure there'll be no shortage of a**holes in the peanut gallery complaining that she isn't white up until and long after the film is released. What I'm more concerned about is how they're going to bring Sebastian and Flounder to life without them looking like nightmare fuel.

I care more for the red hair than anything, and that looks confirmed in those pics.

Though, I keep having to do a double take thinking Halle Berry is The Little Mermaid lol

I consider myself pretty progressive and liberal, i'm all for representation, but Ariel should've stayed a white redhead.

I hate race changing characters since it just comes off as pandering to me, if Disney REALLY wanted a Black lead in a Princess story then just do a Live Action Princess and the Frog cause 1. Tiana is amazing 2. the music for it is awesome 3. the villain is SO memorable and 4. It could tie into Splash Mountain's retheme.

But c'est la vie.

I don't see an issue racebending characters where it makes no difference what race they are in the first place, especially since it's a reimagining and they're merpeople. Disney just did the same thing with a few of the characters in Cruella. The original animated Ariel isn't going anywhere and will still be the definitive version, much like Belle and Jasmine compared to their live action counterparts.

Also for clarity, by "a**holes in the peanut gallery" I mean racists who also complained about the leads of the Star Wars sequel trilogy not being a white male.

Halle Baileys voice alone makes her perfect for Ariel. I didn’t get the casting at first and then I heard her sing and was like “good job Disney, good job”.

I like my adaption's to look like the source material but as long as the change is good enough and still embodies the character I can accept it. Jurnee killed it as Dinah Lance/Black Canary and as long as Halle does the same for Ariel, I'll be good. They look like they've kept her hair red so thats already a good sign and we all know she can sing.

The argument for racebending a character is just as dumb as the one against it so the easiest solution is simply to leave things as is and create better stories suited for representation, that's how I feel about representation in general. Racebending an established character does nothing but cause a vitriol amongst fans further fanned by accusations of racism when most arguments are as simple as "X character looked like this and we want to keep it faithful."

When lesser characters are gender or racebent it usually doesn't matter as they are never as important to the iconography of a property so for the most part those I don't care about.

At the end of the day making Ariel, or Kal El, or whatever other character they want to racebend black or something does absolutely nothing but pander to people, I'd rather they lift up characters like Tiana, Static Shock, etc etc instead of pushing race on established characters.
