Live-Action The Little Mermaid

Sofia Coppola will direct:

EXCLUSIVE: Sofia Coppola is negotiating to direct The Little Mermaid, a live-action version of the classic Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale for Universal Pictures and Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. Caroline Thompson of Edward Scissorhands fame is rewriting the script, about the mermaid willing to make a Faustian bargain to live on land after she falls in love. Previous drafts were done by Fifty Shades Of Grey scribe Kelly Marcel and Shame scribe Abi Morgan, and Joe Wright was at one time eyeing this to direct.

hanschristianThe intention is to move quickly. This is a departure for Coppola in that her projects are usually focused on adult themes. She’s got kids and it wouldn’t be shocking if she wanted to please them with a movie they can see and understand. Working Title is currently in production on Everest, the drama about the climbing disaster. The director is repped by ICM Partners and attorney Barry Hirsch. ICM also reps Thompson. Coppola last helmed The Bling Ring.

i am confused. the internet was joking that Emma should be Ariel. and now Coppola who worked with Emma is directing?

Peter Pan got the title ''Pan''. please hollywood make it short, simple and stupid. please dont let me down.

While do I feel like its April Fools day?

Shame it isnt Disney which is bittersweet in itself.

I would like them to consider making the mermaids more inhuman, like maybe better-looking, streamlined versions of the Navi or something. It would help differentiate the movie from the animated version, they can get around some of the family audience problems you would otherwise get with a beautiful young actress spending most of a movie in a seashell bikini top, and it would add some cool effects scenarios with her transformation into a human woman, etc.

Sofia Coppola is such an out-of-left-field choice for this movie. It should be interesting, especially if she insists on sticking true to the original story.

Sofia Coppola directing The Little Mermaid?!
Now there's NO excuse for her to NOT do a superhero movie!!!

lol classic internet. "You're doing a movie outside of your usual genre? You HAVE to do a superhero movie now, ****er!"

Wow so it's actually starting?! I wonder what her plan is to create the underwater living environment half the story will take place in.

Now that you mention it, I'd love to see a Lobo movie directed by Wes Anderson.

so was the Little Mermaid named in the original story?

if not, do you think they will still call her Ariel ( and make her a redhead ) just because the Disney version is so popular?

Coppola's a good director, so cool on that. I suggest Joey King to play Ariel.

Sophie Turner please! :awesome:

Sansa Stark, that could work. Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) could also be really good and she's a little closer to Ariel's traditionally-given age.

I rewatched the first movie recently because Ariel showed up on Once Upon a Time.

It's a beautiful and simple movie that holds up really well.

It's a shame Joe Wright departed from the project as he was definitely suited to do this. However, Coppola is an inspired choice and I'm curious to see what she'll bring.

Is this going to be done by Disney?

No, it's an Universal Pictures & Working Title production.

I have to clarify this. Some time ago, one argument against Sofia doing superhero stuff was that it isn't something she would do, it's not her type of films.
But this could prove otherwise.

Hmm, i guess that took some of my interest away.

I love the idea of a live action little mermaid but the original ending is so sad, I'm not sure I can handle it
