Live-Action The Little Mermaid

I like the advisor angle better myself. Sure it's a bit, Jafar-ish, but it's still less cliché than yet another "evil sibling" plot.

I just hope they don't retcon it so that Ursula and Triton used to knock around together.

I don't know. If they did an origin story I suppose Ursula would have had to have had some involvement in Ariel's mum's lack of appearence

Well looks like Disneys version is taking off with Lin Manuel Miranda tapped to create new music with Menken. Link

Miranda should play Sebastian too. Also I'm willing to bet that whatever technology used to replicate underwater scenes in Aquaman will be utilized here.

I like Miranda, but his songwriting does NOT hold a candle to what Howard Ashman did with The Little Mermaid and the rest of the Disney Renaissance films.

While that's probably true, that can't really be judged until we hear the songs for Moana.

I don't know, do we want to see a version of the little mermaid with rapping? Oh well I'm sure he's done other stuff. I only know his Hamilton work.

It's funny that he's become the Kevin Feige of Disney adaptions though

Hamilton wasn't all rapping, though. Many if not most of its songs are fairly "normal" Broadway songs.

He's a Broadway tier songwriter, so I highly doubt anything he writes is ****.

I'm definitely more interested in the Disney version. Let's see which version gets made first.

It won't matter which one comes first. The Disney version is guaranteed to be more successful for name brand alone. These other studios are going to learn the hard way that they won't be able to beat the Mouse. Look at what WB is going through with their Jungle Book movie. What I am curious to see is if this one comes out before Aquaman, because I feel like both of those films will utilize the same kind of technology for the underwater scenes.

The Disney version of the story is my favorite Disney movie (I'm a female who was born in the 80's; that's just how it works). If the live action Beauty and the Beast is any good (and I hope it is; I'm hyped for it), then my anticipation for the Disney live action Little Mermaid will be intensified.

I love the original fairytale as well, though. The original story is really sad, but I think it's beautiful. My hype for this particular version of the movie has died quite a bit, though. Chloe Moretz is kind of a red flag nowadays (she just picks really bad movies to be in now, I'm sorry), and I'm sad that Sofia Coppola left the project. Coppola would have made a GORGEOUS film. She would have been a perfect fit as director, if you ask me. What could have been. :(

As of now, I'm definitely more hyped for the Disney version.

But the most important part is casting? If they do as well as that rebel Wilson version or how they recast beauty and the beast then this should be amazing!

It seems like after hearing the pitch for the new film, Disney really wants to get this live-action Mermaid out ASAP. Alan Menken wasn't attached to the BATB remake until they cast the film, but now he's attached to this remake right as it's being developed.

This will be probably one of their "Untitled Fairy Tale" films slated for 2019: March 29, November 8, or December 20. I would say Disney is eyeing the first two, especially November. If they time it right, they ought to release it on the 20th anniversary of the animated film's release.

30th. Damn, I'm getting old. :csad:

I wonder who they'll get for Ursula? I wish, but I don't really expect, they would get a drag queen to play her. I hope they keep her fat though

I bet there'll be a ton of people lining up to direct this. It's a favourite for just about anyone

Disney now doing the live stage version of this on ABC makes me wonder if they are really even planning on moving forward with a movie, unless this live version is also being used to gauge interest (which seems odd, since they didn't do that with any of the other and Little Mermaid nostalgia is probably 3rd only behind Beauty and the Beast and Lion King).

But Beauty and the Beast the movie wasn't really as much of a musical as the stage version, but stuck more closely to the animated film. The Little Mermaid stage version is more of a musical too. I imagine a live action film of the Disney animation would be less of a musical and more like BATB. So I think there would be enough to differentiate itself from a live stage version on ABC, which would be more like a broadcast of the musical that has been filmed, or like the one-off live Grease and Sound of Music specials.

With all the Little Mermaid references in Wonder Woman, Disney should get moving on this film.

Apparently Lindsay Lohan wants to star in this.

She expressed interest as recently as this year. But isn't Ariel meant to be 16? Lindsay Lohan looks like she's in her 40s.

No chance in hell. The only character from this Lindsay could play is one of these two:
